A couple of years ago there was a guy who parked his bike at a rack downtown where I did and he didn't have a seat. So he had to stand the whole way. That said, I have no idea how far he rode.

I found even when I'm coasting, rather than sitting down I'm standing on the pedals. No. Other than stretching your calves, but it doesn't seem like you ride long enough for that to be an issue.

No. And no one I have seen or ride with does either. I suppose if you have an ill fitting bike or are otherwise bothered by your contact point of your saddle then you may want to look at changing some things around so you don't have to stand so much.

Sometimes I commute on bikes I'm about to flip and sometimes they have really crappy saddles. So yeah for those commutes I'll probably stand at least half the time. and I have a 3.8 mile commute so I could see doing your 2-mile runs standing.

You should totally yank your saddle and seatpost like that track racer. Think of the weight savings.

Or maybe just get a trials bike with a big chainring, skinny rims and road slicks!

I do it on really really steep hills (for balance/leverage), or if just want to go faster for a bit, or if I feel like I want to coast, go slow and enjoy feeling the wind while stretching out. But otherwise I stay in the saddle.

I spend a good portion of my time standing, but only because I ride 110psi tires in pothole-ridden Erie, PA. (and while trackstanding, and while accelerating from a stop)

On Wednesday I got passed by a guy on roller blades, quite embarrassing. Though I had been riding for 4 hours / 95km at that point. On my touring bike I never find the need to standup while pedaling. I used to stand a lot on my mountain bike until one day I raised the seat post. I see a lot of people riding bikes with the seat post all the way down and their knees coming up to their shoulders.

I reckon I spend a good deal of time standing on my singlespeeds. Ye olde Western Flyer has an awful saddle and the bike is a tank so I stand quite a bit on it - maybe half the time. My other single speed has a reasonably comfy saddle at the right height but I still stand about 20% of the time on it.

Been trying the sitting thing the last few days and must say it is definitely "easier" to cover more mileage this way through efficiently using the gears and "spinning". I do feel it seems more of a workout standing and I'm basically "sprinting" those 2 miles or so, which probably is great for my V02 max.

I do admit I have a BMX/Mt.Bike background where being able to balance yourself to set up for jumps/hops/uneven ground is more important than distance covered in a certain amount of time.

So I'll probably be sitting on my longer commutes til I'm on the home stretch, then I'll go all out as I have an affinity for that pain in the legs you get while gasping for breath while trying my best to get my yoga breathing techniques in.

i stand when i'm going up hills. and sometimes when i'm just coasting. always have, no matter what kind of bike i was riding.

oh yeah, and also when starting from a dead stop.

I love to stand up! and I get my head down, my butt back, and pretend like i'm racing the cars. but that's just really for my own amusement.

if it seems like you get a better workout standing than sitting then you're sitting wrong. You can crank just as hard and max your body out just as easily sitting. When standing you have to throw your body weight around, balance and transition your weight from one leg to the other so its a lot of wasted effort. Some propels you forward, the rest is wasted on standing. Sit down and get out of the wind, get aero, crank those pedals hard and efficiently and youll go much faster. Sitting is not "easier", if it is youre doing it wrong. Its just more efficient.
