Shooting on the Monon

Yesterday there was a shooting on a trail I take everytime I ride to and from work. http://www.theindychannel.com/news/28266568/detail.html
I don't exactly know how to feel about this being that it's probably an isolated incident, in this location anyway. I guess it's time to purchase a gun and shoulder holster as an...um...accessory to my bike hehe. The most shocking thing I think is that it happened just south of the Indy Whole Foods. I work at the Carmel Whole Foods, and frequent the area, being that commute through this area and ride for fun there too. Oh yeah it happened at like 4 in the afternoon, are you kidding me?:notamused:

You can't let fear run your life. Just go on as you always have. These things happen, but statistically it's incredibly unlikely to happen to you.

Glad they caught the little bastard, and I hope the victim heals up ok.

Smart kid. Went to a house to ask to use the phone to report the shooting. Police Officer lived there and the kid was acting funny so they detained him. He appears to have given up the name of his partner too.

Statistically the Monon is safe. Likelihood of getting hurt because of a double-baby-stroller with two dog leashes spanning the trail is likely higher than any sort of assault.

:twitchy:I know what you're talking about...it wasn't the monon, but the other day my brother and I were riding down the canal tow path and a couple was walking with 2 strollers blocking the entire trail. I dinged my bell but they didn't move so we squeezed in on the left. We slowed down for this mind you, but the beeyatch still opened her ignorant mouth about fing this and fing that, and I was like I dinged my bell:twitchy:! She rambled on about fing bells and I laughed with glee. I need to post signs I guess that say ding ding means get the f*** out of the way.

Which is why I dont get the whole "I carry my gun when I go through bad neighborhoods" mentality. I guess your odds go up in a bad neighborhood, but this stuff can happen anywhere. While it happens more in bad neighborhoods, if you arent in a gang, selling drugs, or getting into domestic disputes, its still extremely rare. You don't have criminals with guns waiting to randomly shoot guys on bikes riding by. Robbery can be a motive, but more often its drug deals, somebody owes money, or something else you shouldn't be into that leads to a shooting. If you're a normal, law-abiding citizen, you're way more likely to get hit by a car than get caught up in an incident like that.

I, personally, have never been shot at while bicycling in Indy.

Hope you knocked on wood :)

OP: Someone was shot in the leg during a robbery attempt about 100 yards from my house, right around the corner. Remove the building on the corner, and I could probably have seen it from my picture window. Those kinds of things don't generally happen in this neighborhood. I still feel safe here, but there are parts of town where I do not. So, in short, you have to decide for yourself. Use your own judgement.

Why woud you even consider getting a gun? It was a one time incident and thay caught the little f*&^%er. The path is safe, always has been. It's this over-reaction to incidents that has gotten Americans to fear leaving their homes and to fear letting their kids go out on their own and be kids. Imho, it's one of the reasons we have such a huge obesity problem. Carrying a gun should be the last thing on your mind, also. The chances of it getting taken and used on someone else are far greater than you actually6 getting it out in time to use it in the million to one shot you may get robbed. In fact, if they find out you have a gun you actually become a target, as that translates directly to money an idiot can get on the streets, and the chance that, if a gun is out already, that you will get yours out and be able to use it before they just pull the trigger are pretty much zero, and the idiots know it.

If I lived in the US I wouldn't leave my house without a 9mm semi auto and kevlar vest. Fortunately I live in a civilized country.

the gun comment was more of a joke than anything else, but there are some sketchy parts of this trail further south that I wouldn't ride through without someone with me. a few years ago i heard about a guy getting knocked off his bike by a group of guys, beaten, and robbed. makes you think about personal protection.

I live near (but not in) a sketchy part of town. I ride through the edge of the sketchy part to get to work. A woman was shot to death on my commute route.

Most shootings like that are people they know. I'm a stranger to them. I've never felt in danger while riding. I'm more likely to get doored.

There was another shooting two blocks off my commute route. It happened overnight. One dead, no suspects. Blah.
