Does anyone use Gaiters?
I was looking at https://www.taigaworks.ca/cart.php?m...t_detail&p=146 and thought these might be nice for Winter commuting. Does anyone have experience with them or a product like them?
I have considered getting some before, but I haven't for whatever reason. I think they would be fabulous for winter commuting.
Me too. I grew up in a warm climate (socal) and had no idea such things existed. I ride year round now, but the one thing I hate is when my feet are soaked and it is in the mid 20s outside.
They would be great paired with galoshes & rain cape too. For winter I just wear big boots.
I haven't worn a set of those since my motorcycling days, I used them to keep me warm by not letting the wind go up my pant legs. Today, I don't need them since I switched to riding a bicycle, being cold is now only an issue for the first mile on cold commutes.

These are the model I use:
https://www.taigaworks.ca/cart.php?m...ct_detail&p=65 as my waterproof hiking boots weren't all that waterproof in heavy rain. They go up plenty high enough to fit under my rain pants. I cut off the strap that goes under my instep, as I don't need it to keep them on my feet. The little toe cup area seems to be plenty. |
I have used gaiters, though not that brand. They work fine for keeping slush and cold water from getting into the top of the boots. They are bulky and a hassle, so I don't put them on unless I really need them. I haven't used them since after I got better fitting rain pants that are longer and cover the tops of my shoes better.

I was checking these out too. They don't wear out when you walk in your hiking boots?
I use these when it gets really wet:
http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Men%...efault,pd.html They don't work 100%, but my feet certainly stay drier with them than without. |

I use a pair of these and have been satisfied with the way they work except in real cold weather (teens F or below). I solved the problem with a pair of thinsulate liners from a worn out pair of pac boots. I cut out the sole and made them rear entry. I put them on over my boots and pull the shoe covers on over them. It works real well. When it's extremely cold (I've got a mile long 40 mph descent during the commute) I throw a pair of toasty toes inside the mix.

I use them when I use the weed wacker, it keeps the cut grass off my socks and legs.
Mine aren't as nice at the ones in the OP. I use them in the winter. Sometimes.
I tired them, but I only wear low top anything and they don't work well with them, I ended up going the neoprene sock with "silk" liner socks for cold weather rain and snow riding.
