for each, talking to someone who is not there..

It's hard to tell a real Schizophrenic , from someone with a cell phone, these days.

No, we just have to worry about them wandering into us with their 3000 lb vehicles.
On two occasions, while driving my car, another motorist has ambled out in front of me while yacking on a cell phone and not even looked up when i leaned on the horn. One of them had the window down and was just 3 feet from my front bumper.
And then there was the young woman I spotted in rush hour traffic, holding a cell phone to her ear with the left hand, drinking coffee with the right. How was she steering the car????
A few years ago, a pedestrian was killed when she wandered in front of the LRT train in Calgary while talking on a cell phone.
What is it about cell phones? They're not the same as other distractions, I don't care what anybody says. People are just in another world when they're on them.

This reminds me of something I saw a year or two ago. I was riding my bike and it was getting a bit dark. I come to a red light and I see a hipster-looking guy riding a nice, fancy Specialized road bike with both hands hold a phone. Looked like he was texting, so he was riding with no hands on the bar...on a busy street with cars whizzing by on his left and parked cars lining the street on his right. I remember being slightly impressed and highly amused by the sheer stupidity.

Perhaps these people are trying to preserve marital bliss and don't want to hear the back door slam when they walk in the front.

But riding a bicycle makes one all knowing about proper social mores, eh?

All the holier than thou cyclists worrying SOOOO much about other cyclists' behavior should "Get over yourself", indeed.

thanks!!! i have wifey on amazon right now looking for the T1 just in case i get caught in the rain.

If we have a right to the road we also have a right to be held accountable. I answered my phone once while riding, I dont think ill be doing that again. If I had gotten a ticket I would have initially been pissed though later would have accepted that I was wrong. Im probably gonna catch some flack for this but while were all complaining I might as well throw in another. I feel like I am the only cyclist in Sacramento that stops at red lights! Did I miss the memo?

You have to feel bad for pedestrians in Japan who have to share the very narrow streets and crowded sidewalks with cyclists. When I first came her, I found walking around in the city to be really unnerving with cyclists often buzzing by suddenly and young kids to keep an eye on - it definitely takes some getting used to, but amazingly it works out for the most part.

Since then I got a bike (if you can`t beat `em, join `em) and have come to believe that there is probably no better place to be a cyclist. However, it would all unravel pretty quickly if cyclists started behaving as irresponsibly as this girl. Cyclists, if they want the freedom to use the sidewalk need be 100% focused, at all times, on riding safely.

I, too, have seen bicyclists maintain reasonably high speeds with neither hand on the handlebar. It's something I've found I simply cannot do, and thus I'm both annoyed and a little impressed every time I witness the feat.

My headset also has wind noise cancelling so it is still usable below 20 mph riding speed.
I don't have the voice synthesis for texts, but I agree a good Bluetooth is the way to go. I use a Motorola S9-HD for my commute, works well with traffic and wind and rain. (Cell phones and headsets are perfectly legal for cyclists in Washington State, too.)

As for why I want to be able to talk on the phone while riding, it gives me more time to ride, times when otherwise I'd be sitting in the office or stuck in a car because being available is part of my job. I often work 10-12 hours a day when things get busy, but only 7-8 of that is in the office, the rest is on the train, at home, or while riding in between.

When I was a cocky young idiot, I'd take my rain jacket off while riding no-hands, roll it up and stick it in my jersey pocket, all while sharing the road with cars.

My bike handling skills are still good enough to do that riding no-hands on rollers, but my cycling experience tells me it's a good idea not to try that too often.
