A great essay about the misery of car commuting
 

I stumbled across this yesterday, and thought some of you might enjoy it. It's a passionate rant about the soul-crushing misery of spending time in a car in traffic.

It does have some pretty rough language, so skip it if you don't care for such things.

^ i haven't commuted by car in 11 years, hell i haven't even owned a car for 11 years now (though i am a car-share member), but reading that reminded me of how awful the daily grind of being stuck in traffic really was all those years ago.

i feel blessed to be intelligent enough to know the way of the bicycle.

how did we, the enlightened ones, get so much smarter than all of the other fools in this world?

By accident of means and circumstance.

The smack in the face of it got me the most when I had a bad commute to a job I hated: I have to fight my way to this??? It really wore me down both psychologically and physically, in my early 20's! It was this awful dawning notion of 'Is this all there is? Then kill me now...' and knowing it would stay that way until I did something to change it. I too hope the writer of the article can find a way to commute by bike.

Awesome read, sometimes it hard to articulate how awesome it is to live in the city.

I feel for the people stuck in a car-centric lifestyle.

Great article and very true. For a lot of people the most miserable and stressfull part of the day is the drive to and from work.

and for me one of the most enjoyable and stress-reducing parts of the day is the ride to and from work.

cars are stupid.

So too are some people, though they make think riding a bicycle makes them smarter than they really are.

Yeah, but he's a lot smarter than this.

Come on, that dude is suffering way too much. A 15 mile bike commute is a *perfect* distance. Just enough to get in a good workout without wearing you out or taking too long.

About the article; I think it started off incredibly well, but I do think it dragged on and became a little overly dramatic. Near the end he lost me.

My commute right now is 6 miles one way, in four months it will be 2 miles. I would still commute by bike if it were 20 miles. Getting up an extra hour and a half early, it would still be worth it.

The author needs to get a tape or cd player and put in an audio book while commuting; maybe learn a new language, self improvement, or even a good novel.

As for the rest of the article - a hog's trough of pretentious slop.

My favorite part of the whole article is the last line of his 'signature'. After ranting about everything from the car commute to how much he hated his last job, he finishes his signature with 'He symbolizes hope."
