Cmon, I went through the bike ban in 87 and other crap. How much can this go with a Mayor telling us he is spending money to improve bikes accessability in the city.

I really doubt if this will ever get passed, and it if does, do you really think the police will bother wasting their time enforcing it?

I really doubt.

This councilwoman Provenzano has nothing better to do with her time and is out of touch with reality. She probably hates delivery people who ride their bikes the wrong way down the streets.

Anyway, the cops will be too lazy to enforce any law like this. It'll be like jaywalking.

ultra-g 11-18-04 08:48 AM

By the way, Provenzano is a Democrat

This is an important issue that could have a nationwide impact to all commuters: if it is implemented in NYC, it may be implemented in other parts of the country later on...
We need the support of the entire Commuting forum to help us here in NYC..

"The first written laws appeared in Athens around 621 B.C. They were attributed to Dracon, a thesmothes (a lawgiver). The punishment for all offenses was death. Regardless of how small or serious the infraction the punishment was the same. Dracon felt that people guilty of small infractions of the law deserved the death penalty and that there was, after all, no greater penalty for those that had committed the more serious infractions. As a result, laws today which are cruel and harsh are sometimes referred to as Draconian."

Draconian? Maybe if they cut off your legs. But a bicycle tag?
I'm not sure that wouldn't be a good idea. It would give the city a database of the bikes in the city; if they're smart they'll include the serial number... If they find a stolen bike, they could then contact the owner. If a cop suspects the provenance of a bike, he could determine it's rightful owner in a minute if the system was set up right.

O.

Count me in, I've never been too fond of the crazy guys in CM.
Seems to me (from what I see out the 2nd floor window seat where I have dinner every friday night with my gf) that CM is mostly either people out with a political agenda, people who like to make a lot of noise and break traffic laws, or yuppies who only ride once or twice a week. That is NOT the way to have cycling accept as a viable alternative for everyday transportation.
I'm a regular commuter, the fact that I'm out there everday I think shows enough of a point to people. I've been seeing the same traffic cop at one intersection for about 2 weeks, she waves me through sometimes now. Some cars also get to know me, there's a van that lets me in the lane and lets me go through on most days if I see him on the way in. I don't slow anyone down and I move to the side when I know I'm too slow. Otherwise, I take the lane if I can go fast enough or if the situation requires.

Putting someone in prison for 15 days for not having a license plate on a bike is definitely cruel and harsh. "Draconian" fits.

As the intro currently reads, there's no plan to record serial numbers or return stolen bikes to owners. To make it a bit more confusing, there's no provision for people who own more than one bike. It certainly makes you wonder whether Provenzano wants to register actual bikes or individual cyclists, particularly since only cyclists 16 and over would be required to register.

I'm pro-bicycle advocacy and I'm anti-Critical Mass

Anyone want to tar and feather me??

Anyway, this bill is important enough that it was a topic on conservative radio talk show host John Gambling's show this morning (he is against the bill)...

... he'll be asking Mayor Bloomberg about tomorrow when Bloomberg does is weekly hour long radio session with John Gambling.

Your introduction makes no
mention of visitors to your fair
city. I'm planning to attend a
cycling related event in 2005 with
about 3000 other attendees.
Shall we take our $$ elsewhere?
I'm sure you've had the myriad
studies that reflect how your
proposed legislation will
negatively impact cycling safety
sent to you by now. I suggest you
read them while I discuss
relocation with the organizers of
our convention. We can't have
our people locked up and their
cycles impounded because we
choose NYC as a host city for our
industry. There are usually
several trade shows at both the
consumer, retail and industry
level specifically for the NY
market held in your city every year. No
longer if you don't accommodate
us. I'd like to also request that you
discuss this proposed legislation
with local law enforcement.
Both your staff and NYPD have indicated
there has been no dialogue between your
respective offices.

M. Provenzano, you're a
Democrat? Transalt can provide
you with thousands of voters,
and can take thousands you may
have had away. Suggest you take
a learned look at the cause and
effect of this proposed
legislation. Although you may
find the private sector lucrative it
can be a lasting embarrassment
as to how you may find yourself
there.

Thank you for your time, please
take further time to educate
yourself in matters of road safety and
statistics available as they apply to
your introduction.

Sincerely, and as friendly as I can be
in these circumstance,

From what I've read elsewhere, nothing but negative press for this boondoggle. The police don't want it, the public (except cyclists) don't care and the beancounters are scared of the $$ lost to implementation of such a large beaucracy to control it all. There was no mention of what to do with peoeple who show up in NYC with a bike for a few days in the legislation so I thoughtI'd use that as a wedge to tourist $$ since I don't live there and have no say.
