https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEKc6gwXNfo

what are these idiots thinking. enraging motorists is not the answer.

one participant was clipped by someone clearly provoked to anger at the "corking" blockade (at one of Boston's busiest intersections, and at rush hour): https://rollinginboston.bostonbiker.o...ops-dont-care/ maybe this will be a turning point, though I suspect more uncritical thinking will ensue.

sheesh

I make left turns on my bike in THIS intersection TWICE a DAY during my commute, and drivers never gave me ANY fuss.
These fixie riders with their childish attitude is not only hijacking the public roadway, but is also hijacking OUR cause.
As a bicyclist, I feel sick seeing this.

btw, I should clarify that I am ONLY talking about the antics of the Boston CM crew this past Friday.

maybe CM events in other cities are less insane, perhaps even lawful. i sure hope so.

Antagonizing to create conflict rarely works to improve relations. More likely, it results in a crisis where someone gets hurt. Affecting a large group because you don't like the actions of a few is bad form.

A question: Do these CM groups announce their intended activities widely and with sufficient time to allow drivers to change their routes?

Recorded proof that not all cyclists are intelligent. As I just said in another post - every single second we are on the bike or talking about cycling, we are emissaries of our sport/lifestyle. This video is just more fuel for haters to use against us. The only point those riders made was they were a-holes.

And here I thought I was just some person trying to get to work or the local store like everyone else.

Let's not put to much more thought into cycling than there really is.

He doesn't mean that you're some registered ambassador for all of cycling. He just means that you shouldn't be a dick while you're on your bike, or you'll just add to the animosity that drivers have against cyclists already.

Thank you. Obviously he hasn't received the registration card yet.

I suspect the corking circus was a result of backlash to Brian McGrory's piece in the Boston Globe two weeks ago: https://www.boston.com/news/local/mas..._bicycle_free/
I heard people commenting that driver antagonism increased in the days after it was published.
I have been on several CM rides (though not in the last year) and they are generally well behaved if you can forgive the corking of intersections to let all the riders through. Summer rides, in particular, tend to be relatively quite since many college aged kids are home from school. I've been on two rides where it went downhill very fast - one 4 or 5 years ago after a cyclist was killed in Allston/Brighton and another maybe in November when a large number of young male riders decided to block several intersections during the ride and shout "Whos streets? Our Streets!" The ride turned into a protest instead of a ride. I abandoned both early.

I don't think this sort of thing "makes things dangerous" for cyclists unless you're part of that crowd right then right there. It's not like people will go out and run down a cyclist a week later in vengeance for being corked.

Mind you, I think the usefulness of CM has LOOOOONG since run its course.

Perhaps not, but it's easy ammunition for people to complain to their lawmakers.

Some cyclists have reached a boiling point, and chose a different strategy than you and I. Motorist animosity is not a concern to me until I feel someone is deliberately trying to physically endanger me, and then I only deal with it on a case by case basis.

A number of motorists are not going to like a cyclist riding on the road regardless of the cyclist's riding manner.

THESE PEOPLE ARE F^^KING IDIOTS. They help no one and only harm a just cause for cycling advocates. IDIOTS. It's time for Critical Mass to start policing its own - OR OWN IT AS WHAT THEY ARE IN THIS CLIP - IDIOTS.

Funny, that's one of the words a motorist called me as I was legally positioned in the middle of the lane while stopped at a stoplight.

Since you're into comparing the application of words, now how 'bout comparing the application of behaviors? Do you see ANYTHING "legal" with what these people are doing in this video as compared to your self described cycling behavior? Are you saying this behavior is one in the same with yours? If not, let's talk about that.

Do CM people block cyclists, just cars, or all traffic?

You guys are squares. Critical mass is a healthy nonviolent political protest designed to draw attention to the vulnerability of cyclists, and the problems of a roadway system legally and physically slanted against them.

That goes way beyond "corking" - that is deliberately stopping traffic on a busy road at a busy time of day for the express point of pissing off as many people as possible. Our Critical Mass ride is completely different. We keep to one lane, always leaving a lane free for cars to get by, we are friendly, we stop at red lights and we ride well past rush hour when traffic is light. The only "corking" we do is to stop cars long enough for the group to get through a light. We treat the group of cyclists as though it were a single bus or 18-wheeler and move as one unit. If the light is red when we get there, we stop. If it turns red while we are going through, we get everyone through. Its fun, and the motorists seem to enjoy it too. We even bring the kids along.

something about flies and honey and vinegar...

lol, I'm just going to assume you're being sarcastic and making a joke, in which case I have to say I think you've really got a gift for humor and you could make a lot of money being a comedian.

Not everyone who rides fixed gear is a hipster punk, and from that video it clearly looks like the majority of those people have gears and/or can coast.

This is clearly the wrong way CM normally works. Taking up the entire road while obeying the law is one thing, but they could have easily all been cited for moving violations assuming Boston has similar laws to most states that treat bicycles as vehicles.

God. One CM event was enough for me to realize that my participation went completely against my interests as a committed bike commuter. This just drives me nuts. It seems like the "bicycling activism" one encounters consists of "here's what you can and should try to get away with," and not, here are the responsibilities of a cyclist on the road.
