Do you ever commute at night?
Most of my shifts are closing the restaurant and so when I clock off I always ride in the dark. Does a typical commute for you guys involve riding under the stars?
My former job occasionally involved really late nights, which meant riding home on deserted city streets. Coworkers would practically insist on giving me a ride home but I always declined. I actually really looked forward to it.
In the winter months, of course.
4 days a week.
Half of the year.
Working at a restaurant, I've had shifts that get off at 1pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm, 7pm, 8pm, 10pm, 1130pm, and 4am (ugh) regularly. I love riding at night. I feel much safer riding at 4am than I do at 5pm.
I leave my house at 3am. does that count?
In winter it can get dark as early as 4:20pm.
Everyday that I ride to work is before dawn. We start at 6 am, so I usually leave the house shortly after 5.
From late october till early march.
If I didn't commute at night I wouldn't have a job to commute to. I work third shift, 11:00PM-7:00AM.
Once daylight savings ends, I usually ride home in the dark, and ocassionally if I have a really late night at work. I love bike commuting in the dark.
I leave pretty early everyday well before sunrise. Every day, my morning ride is pitch dark. Good thmy is that I get to ride home in the afternoon sun light except during the winter month where I do ride back home in the dark for two month.

I love commuting in the dark. That's why summer is my least favorite season for riding... it's too hot and too light out.
I have 2 jobs and one is midnight to 8 am. I love riding at night in our rural area. It's the smells that come out more that make it fun....and the wonder of the sky!!
Commute at night? Only when it's dark!

By 'every ride' I mean every ride when the sun has set or hasn't risen when I hit the road, which at my latitude is every single day of PST, although just about none of PDT.
it's hard to answer the poll, the options are too limited. during dentral daylight time, i never commute at night, but during central standard time, every ride home from work is in the dark. i don't leave my home until 7:30am, so i always have daylight for my morning leg regardless of the season.

When I've had to work late, my co-workers think I'm nuts riding at night. I feel safer in many ways - traffic is much lighter, the crazed commuters are off the road, and a good set of lights and rear reflector (required by state law) improves my visibility to drivers vs daytime. Biggest concern - any drunks are going to be "attracted the the flashing red light". Biggest problem - red lights that won't cycle because the road sensor won't react to anything smaller than a car (fixed by a recent change to the laws here on stop lights for bikes & motorcycles).
I work 10 to 10, sometimes day shift, sometimes night shift, so I either leave or go home in the dark. I prefer it to the day ride because there's less traffic.
I assumed by asking if we commute at night, the OP meant to ask if we commute in the dark. I answered yes, every ride because it is rare that I leave my house when it's light, even though most of my rides home are not the dark.
It's definitely not, No I don't and also not Occasionally. |
About 9 months of the year, I need to have lights on for some or all of my commute.
Yes, all the time. I don't have a car so it's basically a necessity. I try to be more careful. Not because I'm worried about visibility or being visible, but because I think there are a lot more drunk drivers on the road.
