From what I can tell from the very little info on Web currently, it has one feature that is poorly executed- the rack. It's too narrow to mount a trunk bag to and the single strut is less than confidence inspiring for using panniers.

MK313 08-13-11 08:48 AM

Dang! That is a beautiful bike.

Aushiker 08-14-11 04:17 AM

Hi

Thanks for this. This is exactly what I have been thinking about over the past few days ... an urban style of bike, but the price is an ouch factor and oh that useless looking rack. I wonder if there are other options around with belt drives/dyno hubs?

Andrew

scroca 08-14-11 06:18 AM

$2,600 ! That's funny.

Spot Acme
Future version of the Civia Bryant with Versa VRS-11 Shifters

Both will probably be similarly priced to the Specialized when specced with racks/fenders/dyno/lights.
Add several hundred for Aussie import price hike and you have a $3k commuter hah! That's the price for the latest bling...

You could look into Alfine 8 + Non CenterTrack Gate at the moment. I like these two models:

Raleigh Alley Way
Norco Ceres

I personally want a steel drop bar with Gates CT + 2 speed Sram Auto. No one's making that though, got to wait till Gates releases more cog/belt combinations, iron out the kinks etc.

no1mad 08-14-11 07:17 AM

^^If considering the Alley Way, you might want to hurry- it looks like it's not part of the 2012 line-up.

It'll be easier to find a belt drive and then install your own dynohub and the lights that you like the best.

+1

That was my very first thought too. It's too narrow to mount a trunk bag, and there's nothing to keep panniers out of the spokes. Worst of all possible worlds.

fietsbob 08-14-11 11:34 AM

There are others , perhaps better execution..
the back of the rack has a 3LED dynamo powered taillight, integrated..

German Tout Terrain framemaker, (PeterJ White imports them to the US)
offers another way of running a belt drive and IG hub.
they weld the rack on as part of the frame, in back..

Option, you can also Get A Bike Friday Tikit..
Belt drive With the 11 speed hub,
and as its a folding bike, You do not have to leave it on the curb..
bring it inside , folded up and stowed in a corner.

Not integrated. It's the bolt-on Supernova E3 taillight that you can bolt on to any old rack.

PhatBoyG 08-14-11 08:18 PM

Sharp looking for sure, but dang that's expensive.

fietsbob 08-14-11 09:31 PM

some better integrated than most..
European stuff has 2 horizontal holes, Tubus , has a flat strap on the back, so the wire in the center
of the taillight has to be set out on standoffs ..

Tout Terrain does a better job, lays down wiring guides and there are some thru the tubing routes

Rack welded on as part of the frame.. as I said.

$500 for a decent frame (at least) + Alfine 11 @ $650 + dynamo already puts you @ $1250. Now, that CenterTrack is another $250, and add on your favorite stem + saddle, some nice wheels, a decent handlebar (and don't forget your headset, bottom bracket and those sweet disc brakes) and you can see where the price starts to make sense. I suspect lots of people end up spending this much for their bicycle after a few years of upgrading. Spend the money up front, if you ask me!

irclean 08-15-11 12:12 AM

I wonder how they split the aluminum frame to get the belt in there (removable dropout?) Nice to see that belt drive appears to be more than a flash in the pan.

This shot shows the bolts on the frame's belt side where the split is - right above/at the dropout.

I'd like to see some pictures of the whole bike, rather than these MySpace-style close-ups. It's hard to get a idea of what it really looks like when all you have are explicit close-ups of cranks and hubs and things.

The Chemist 08-15-11 09:34 AM

Pretty cool looking bike, though I have to echo some of the comments about how useless that rack is. It doesn't even appear to be connected to the seat stays - how on earth would that rack even stay in one place without proper anchoring?

dynaryder 08-15-11 11:40 AM

What's the fork? If it's steel or CF,ok,if it's alum,do not want.

It's looks to be pretty much a faux rack that is more of an integrated fender and tail light mount. The fender is bolted to the top of the rack in two places and the legs of the rack serve their real purpose as half of the fender stays. So if you want to replace the rack with a real one, you'll also need to replace the rear fender.

The Chemist 08-15-11 05:44 PM

^You'd think that on a bike that costs this much form wouldn't be put so far ahead of function. Disappointing.

I completely agree. I was getting ready to build a Civia Bryant into a flatbar commuter with the Alfine 11, dynamo, etc and it came to almost the exact price. Now I have a decision to make.

I don't think that's the case. I think you would just upbolt the rack and add another one instead. The fender is still mounted as it normally would be, they just use it as a mount for the rack too. I actually thought about putting another rack just above this one and make that little gap a place for the U-Lock to slide in. Could be pretty sweet if it's done right.

Since I'm actually thinking about ordering a Specialzied Source Eleven for my next commuter, I'll be sure to take lots of pics and give a review. :)

Hard to tell from the pictures how much tire clearance there is on the rear. Doesn't look like it will accomodate a wide tire. For the money, you could build a pretty sweet custom commuter just the way you want it.

I think it comes with 700x30 tires. And from the pictures I've seen, I bet you could easily fit 700x35 on it ... maybe even 700x38. Personally, I think a 28 - 32 width is perfect.

You can unbolt the rack from the fender and remove it, but the rack legs are also fender stays. It really looks like the fender and rack are designed to stabilize each other. So you would be left with the horizontal fender stays and the mounts at the seatstay bridge and chainstay bridge. The question would then be is using three out of five mounting points stable enough.

You could buy a scooter or a junker used car for that much.
