Remember your location while riding.
 

This morning while riding to work I had a school bus pull out in front of me (I was crossing a tee intersection with the right of way, he had a stop sign) so close that I could have touched the bus. Between trying not to get run over while memorizing the phone and bus numbers, I didn't remember the street names we were on when he pulled out in front of me. Knowing the exact location may have helped when I called to complain (although the woman that answered the phone sounded like she wished I hadn't called at all and couldn't have cared any less), I just couldn't remember the street names even though I've gone by there for years.

So learn from my mistake as they say, and know the names of the streets on your routes so if you ever need to call and report dangerous driving like I did or better yet, get a video camera to record your trip.

or, you could have waited until you got to work/home and used Google maps to refresh your memory before making the call. ;)

That is a bummer that you could not give the street IDs. It should not affect the complaint too much since you had the bus ID. Hopefully his management will let all the drivers know to be aware of cyclists on the road.

Unless you are in a life and death situation, I think it is a good idea to write down all important facts of an incident before calling in a complaint or calling law enforcement. It sounds corny but try to answer as many of the 5 W's as you can: who, what, where, when, why

I offered to call back with that info after I got to work, and whatever was the response I got for my offer. Not that that's the only offer that gets me the whatever response....

bummer, sounds like they don't care to protect cyclists.

call the police not the bus company. don't ask if they want info just say your story. the call is recorded.

This is why some commuters always ride with a helmet cam.

Also, if it's a public school district bus, always make a call to the superintendent to file a complaint. If it's a contracted service, call the state police or highway patrol. This is your best bet for results.

You may be calling in only to complain to someone's good friend or the actual person that nearly hit you as a lot of transportation leads/supers drive as well. My boss would periodically anger someone on the road only to have the complaint phoned directly to himself.

"You don't say? Oh yeah? I'm so sorry! Well I'll make sure that person is dealt with HARSHLY!"

Calling this bus company is obviously a waste of time as with many other bus companies. Calling the police is likely a waste of time as well if no collision occurred.

E-mail (or up the anti with certified letters) the school Superintendent and Mayor, letting them know they will be on the defendant list for any future lawsuits resulting from injuries caused by the school buses.
