Okay, another newbie question. If I purchase a Shimano pedal, is it guaranteed to fit a Shimano shoe?

If you buy any SPD-compatible(two holes in the cleat) shoe, it will work with any SPD or SPD clone pedal.

I have the Shimano pedal that's clipless on one side and a platform on the other, and it's great. It's nice because I don't have to worry about getting clipped in right away as I pedal away from stops. Of course, I can do that with my regular SPDs but it's much easier to get my foot planted on the bigger platform.

There's nothing wrong with toe clips, either.

Any SPD pedal, not the SPD-sl which are different, will work with any SPD-compatible shoe. The description will say either 2 bolt compatible or SPD compatible. If it says 3 bolt or SPD-sl compatible without the aforementioned, then it will not work with SPD cleats.

This link will show you graphically which shoes are compatible with which pedals/cleats.
