Need help with a riding problem
Here is the problem I have
When I ride either my road bike or mountain bike after a short time or lengthy ride the back of my neck starts to hurt from looking up or forward...can someone help me or give me ideas on how to illeviate this situation or pain? |
It sounds like your bike fit is off. Do you have to consciously lift your head up to view the road in front of you? Maybe raise your handlebars a bit.

Either raise your handlebars, or lower your seat.
Stretch before you ride, do push-ups, and make certain that you do neck rotations. Do neck rotations whenever you think about it all the time. After about a month of this, return your handlebars to their original positions, but keep up the neck rotations. - Slim :) * Crucial to your recovery will include filling up a 1 gallon milk container with water and raising it above your head, and side to side above eye-level, while standing erect. Do about fifty reps daily. 1 to the left. 2 above the head. 3 to the right. 20 push-ups is good __30-45 yrs. old One minute neck rotations whenever you think about it! At least 10 X per day |
If you're new to commuting, it's just that your neck is compensating for all the road vibrations, and not used to doing that. Stretch before and after, if stretching helps you, anyway. It does nothing for me. In my experience, after a few weeks, your muscles will get stronger and more used to working, and the pain will go away. In the mean time, take ibuprofen and use heat or cold to help the muscles relax.
I actually had my first bout with neck pain in a while, because I doubled my usual commute today, and used drop bars for the first time. Bit different load on the neck, that. |
i have a neck problem, and a bike with an upright sitting position was my solution. However I found that sitting upright is less efficient than a more aerodynamic position. You should also make sure your seat is comfortable and that the seat is correctly positioned (height and angle), because sitting upright will put more pressure on your back. Test ride bikes for more than a few minutes. Good luck.
