while I have been lucky with being harassed by dogs, today was the first day I was paced by a rooster...I guess he thought I was chasing him for dinner.... but when I passed him I got a appreciative "cluck"...

Just checked NOAA. I am so not looking forward to the ride home:

Hot and humid again. It was a tough slog but got home in normal time. There was an intermittent head wind for most of the way, but I managed to keep a decent pace nonetheless.

I saw Porcupine Tree in Houston last October. I died it was so good. :)

I had another  beautiful ride this afternoon. It was slightly sprinkling and cloudy with a nice (albeit intermittent) cool breeze. Can't believe this is July in Texas.

Hot and sticky ride home with temps in the mid 90's, decent energy-a good ride. Saw a motorcycle cop parked on the trail near the Washington Sailing Marina, he may have been watching for speeding cyclist, luckily I was taking it easy, riding on the flats.

On a sad note, a 22 year old commuter was killed in DC today, looks like a trash truck right hooked her in the bike lane as she was on her way to work. Upsetting news to hear upon arriving home.

jwgd 07-08-08 06:22 PM

Left work a few minutes early to time-trial my 5-mile route to the bus station as nasty, nasty thunderheads formed in the west. Needless to say I lost. I've ridden in some heavy rain before, but I didn't think I could get that wet. To top it off, the bus was SRO and the driver had the AC cranked.

Beats driving though.

trombone 07-08-08 09:36 PM

Unsatisfactory. Every traffic light was red. Every single one. As a consequence it took a long time to get warmed up, as it was a chilly morning. (12C!).

One funny thing though; Mrs Trombone had to go out early to run an errand, and was walking over Anzac bridge in the opposite direction to me as I rode by. Apparently she waved like mad at me, but I didn't see her. I was in the zone!

huhenio 07-08-08 11:04 PM

First close call in years.

Doing a left turn on my usual and last turn in my commute, when a car doing waaay over the 25 speed limit comes and not even slows down or yields or nothing.

Just barely missed me by inches.

In front of the police station.

It would have been really bad ... over 50 mph, and then she would have to explain to the cops why she creamed their buddy who works where they fix their motorcycles.

robinthehippie 07-08-08 11:49 PM

Didn't really work but I rode across town to the station for a class. So, I'm counting that as a commute.

Rode in, too tired to really think about the ride. After class I went out to lunch with my niece and brother in law, pulled my niece in her trailer. Super cute when my niece was yelling "whee! bike! bike! bike!" as I was working my way up a hill.

I took a new way home because I wanted to try a new coffee shop (didn't know it closes early during the summer.) There was more traffic than I'd like but it might be a fun ride earlier in the day or later at night. Didn't add much in the way of mileage, but there's a tricky hill.

Flat tire 2 days in a row. 2 out of 5, because at least I got there.

virre 07-09-08 01:39 AM

The commute home yesterday was sactisfory (espacally as I one the game I played),

today was worst, 15c , slight wind and sunny. Now yesterday was windy and gray, and it reallly is a big diffrence between that. I didn't do the step upphills on my way here today.

And of course there is even so many bikes at places that you have to stop. (This is also due to two way bikelanes beeing to small)

Hope the way home will be better (although Wensday is a detour, for a free dinner)

trombone 07-09-08 02:46 AM

Very cold, wet, and a headwind.

Ah well.

MIKEnDC 07-09-08 04:24 AM

Ugh! Humid as hell! ~74F/23C w/80+% humidity. No so bad when riding of course (self-induced breeze :D ), but I got about a mile out--just enough to loosen up a little--and made a quick stop at a convenience store. Stepping back out of that AC was rather rude, to say the least.

It's nice knowing that there's a shower at the other end, and this morning I was pushing it all the way. Could it be those TDF time trails highlights on Vs.? Naaahhhhh...

Edit: How the world has turned Trombone. Wasn't that long ago you were wilting in 30C while we Northern Hemispheroids were talking ice everyday. Oh well--it is what it is. Say hello to Mrs Trombone and all the little Trombones on behalf of all here at BF. :D

no ride this morning. both of my boys (7yo and 11mo) are sick - 7yo had a 104.5F temp last night - he was having 'night terrors' all night long, then waking the young one up and then vice versa - horrific cycle! The youngest was dealing with the sickness the entire past weekend too. Needless to say I am exhausted - wimped out and took the boring transportation in this morning:( My wife has an appointment so I gotta get home to stay with the boys anyway. Hopefully today/tonight goes a little better or I might start looking more like this guy :twitchy:

Fine ride, humidity was a bit lower than previous days, but it was still plenty warm and humid (circa 72F/85%RH). It was very gloomy out, with a low cloud deck. Chance of Tstorms this PM. Hopefully they hold off until after 4:30. I was scoping out potential safe havens on my way in, just in case.... No interactions with any vehicles or wildlife, just a quiet, relaxing, sweaty ride.

no bike, had to ride in car, yuck.

Poor things, all of you!
I hope the boys get over it quickly so you can sleep.

As for my ride home yesterday...it was fast. I knew I had a night out waiting for me when I got home, so I really rode hard. Now my legs are sore.

cg1985 07-09-08 05:53 AM

Today was a positive commute! It was nice out, albeit a smidge humid. But sunny and not too warm at about 68F degrees. My ride is mostly between two cities on a four lane road that goes over two highways, so not too scenic, but at this point, I hardly notice the foliage or lack of.

The positive part was that I was trying to take it easy, and somehow made it to work the fastest I ever have. Who knew?!

theWolf 07-09-08 06:03 AM

err... I think I'm trying to do to much too soon. Yesterday at the end of my commute I felt a slight pain inside the left knee. It wasn't to bad but this morning it started to hurt more as I went along. The last two miles were painful, the weird thing is that if I stood up to pedal I didn't feel it but when I was sitting down it hurt like a monkey spank.

I'll be taking the rail line home as far as it can take me and then ride the last 12 miles pretty slow. If it hurts to much, I'll be calling the wife for a ride. Looks like I'm out for the rest of the week, don't want to risk a serious injury :(

I also got three long honks by a big ***** SUV just because she had to go around me in the other lane, damn loser! Course I gave her the WTF look.

77midget 07-09-08 06:04 AM

No bike for me today-I have a chiropractor appt at lunch, and it would be very tough to fit it in on bike and still get my work done, so I took the toyota. It would have been a nice ride too, even if humid. I am hoping to fit a ride in tonight after work to make up for my transgression.

vtjim 07-09-08 06:23 AM

Very humidiferous. :) Everything was well & good until I got here, then I wilted. Temps already in the mid 70s when I arrived. Can't even see across Lake Champlain with all the haze in the air. More scantily-clad women runners today, and 4 (two pairs) of attractively-clad roadie women riding the other way. I have good karma this week. :p

DallasSoxFan 07-09-08 07:00 AM

Perfect weather, courteous drivers. Got to smell pipe smoke from a passing car. Saw 3 other commuters - a 16 year (or so) old kid with a backpack. An older guy with a white beard and an egg crate rolling a stop sign, and a serious guy with drop bars and a backpack. Got into work and found a new car parked next to my closet with a rack and a road bike hanging off of it.

jpdesjar 07-09-08 07:09 AM

nice and warm
my legs felt good too even though i did my regular 10 miles yesterday and ran 3 miles last night

getting ready to run a 10k in August so i am trying to push the running a bit more

starla 07-09-08 07:12 AM

Weather-wise, was beautiful. But a LOT of wildlife encounters. Most of them unfortunately fresh roadkill. :( I don't know what happened overnight. Encountered my first skunk and didn't know what to do. He was on the side of the road and crossing. When he saw me, he put up his tail and I was SO afraid of being sprayed, so I just yelled at him and hammered as fast as I could past him. I guess I need to add skunk-avoidance techniques to my riding repertoire! ;)

Are you using clipless pedals by any chance? I had pain on the inside of my knees after going clipless, but once I moved the cleats further outside (to bring my knees closer to the bike when I ride) the pain disappeared.
