excellent commute this morning - that is all

tkblazer 07-29-08 11:00 AM

ah man its hard to get out of bed early to do the commute... left my house at 7am and got to work right at 9am.. thinking about changing the front chain ring out to a 44T, since the 46T is kicking me ass on the ss... but i think i will wait until i put some miles on some serfas seca rs tires i just bought off ebay.

I dislike that big gear. I know I should be on it more often and I make every effort, but that smaller gear just keeps calling me. I miss the shifting of my hybrid. These old 10-speeds stink, because I have to move my hands off the bars to shift. Only 1 person passed me yesterday, so I think I'm doing better.

CommuteCommando 07-29-08 11:34 AM

Got cut off by some guy in a honda passing me, then turning into a driveway just ahead of me. At least the preek had the courtesey to honk to let me know he was comming

Success!! First commute (of 3 so far) without a flat!

Ride was good. left earlier than usual (7:45) and rode the 12.75 miles in 57 mins. I almost ran over a HUGE dead rat on the Henry Hudson greenway, though. I wonder how it ended up there...

What is this strange thing to the right of my recumbent in my parking lot at work!?!?!? All I know is the rider is male based on a helmet left in the mens locker room at the gym. They didn't ride today so I hope they are pacing it or off work and not throwing in the towel because of the 100+ heat.

Nice! I hope you remain a faithful NY sports fan. I know it may be hard out in New England...

harleyfrog 07-29-08 01:38 PM

Had a brief, yet intense, thunderstorm earlier this afternoon. Looks like it may be a cooler ride home this evening than the ride to work this morning (maybe even a little wet).

rumrunn6 07-29-08 01:45 PM

Hey Riverdale, Sorry. I have kids now and they have to be fans of where they grow up. I root for NY when I can. The superbowl was hard though. That was a weird game anyway - it was like both teams suddenly learned how to play football in the last 3 minutes ... ugh Where was the action for most of the game. Weird I tell ya. Been here since '84 when I was 23. I miss the big city and get down there a few times a year for a breath of real life. Boston is quaint but a bit "dink". I live in a tiny town that's a lot like Mayberry RFD.

It was like I needed to buy special shoes to fit into the toe clips - to heck with that! I think they are helping - I haven't slipped off a pedal.

I was just in MEC mulling over whether I should pick up a clip addon...

rumrunn6 07-29-08 02:08 PM

And what did you see? Not sure of your point. What do you mean by a "clip addon". Whatever you consider, make sure your shoe fits in it.

It happens...

What town do you live in? My wife went to University in Waltham, and I used to visit a few times a month. I spent many weekends there and in Boston. Definitely a nice place to visit. Horrible place to drive ;).

hnsq 07-29-08 02:19 PM

The backwheel of my commuter is a little bent, and the spokes that need adjusted have to be replaced...my only other bike is a fixed gear I got cheap just for fun, so I am stuck commuting doing my 25 mile (total) commute on that thing on Pittsburgh hills...

I don't know if it really sucks or if it is the best feeling in the world, but I am pretty sure it is one of the two

rumrunn6 07-29-08 02:21 PM

Yeah, the roads are all one-way, all outbound from the city! The first time I came here I drove right past it. I was like ... huh? Was that the city? In '84 it had like 2 tall buildings! I live in Maynard and work in West Newton (close to Waltham). My 17 mile commute is a straight run east on route 117, then 20 and main street in Waltham, hang a right on Moody and I'm just about there. I push it by going to my GYM in Brighten after work for 20-30 min of upper body weight training, then 22 miles home. 44 by time I'm home. Last night I passed out - it felt good. I'm doing it 3 days this week.

I'd like to share my commute through pictures. This is how my commute looks on the way home from work. I would take pictures going the other way, but usually I'm in too much of a rush to get to work to stop and lollygaggle.

Nice pics. I really appreciate the one about the hill. The last .65 miles of my 12.75 mile commute is an intense winding one lane super-hill, with tons of cars, and 5 different bus lines utilizing it. It's never fun; unfortunately there is no way around it at the moment - at least until they reopen the Henry Hudson River bridge in 2010...

talleymonster 07-29-08 03:58 PM

Excellent commute. Nothing exciting. Beautiful Morning. A little warm on the way home in the afternoon, but I made it home in good time despite that.

Oh I feel your pain with the hill. I've tried all sorts of routes to get around this hill, but they all lead to more or less the same type of hill.

When I lived in ELAY I commuted from Sylmar to Burbank. Glenoaks Blvd almost all the way, 13 miles, almost all downhill. Going home was rough, but there was a shower on the other end.

Baying_Hound 07-29-08 04:48 PM

Ride in was great and fast. The weather was really nice, so I took the fast road bike. Got a compliment on my condition and riding ability from a fellow commuter - good ego boost.

The way home was good until I got stung by a bee on my left calf two miles from home. I almost pulled over and called the wife to come get me as it was amazingly painful to pedal. However, I made it home. An icepack and two Benadryls later, it's not feeling so bad.

Had a pleasant commute today. It was cool in the morning dark as I rode in to work. Going home, was hot but I had a nice breeze. My Diamondback MTB is at the shop and I really don't want to ride my Edgewood hybrid (she's still too new), so I took my beater bike. An old Roadmaster citybike I bought at a garage sale for $20. I now remember why I keep it around. She's a solid ride. Steel frame, so she's heavy and not fast but she'll get you to where you need to go...and I don't worry about her getting stolen 'cause she's my beater bike (please take her!, I don't have the heart to git rid of her). I offered her up for a good cause as a ghostbike but the admin in charge of the ghostbike program never got back with me nor called. Once I get my MTB back, all will be right with the world again and I'll store her away again.

Ugh I hate this hot humid weather.

Making excellent time, but feel so nasty at the end of my ride. :(

that's a really great idea. i hope you don't mind if i copy you!

my commute today was full of the unexpected. humid, hot morning, starting out on the bus at 7:30, 15 minutes to Northampton from Holyoke, MA. i was thinking about getting off the bus a little sooner than usual and enjoying a little more of the morning on the bike. "naw," says i to myself. "yer knees been botherin ya. just take it easy."

well wouldn't you know it, but right at the point where i had been thinking of getting out early there was a detour due to some construction in the road. a long detour. i took that as a sign that i was meant to get the extra mileage after all. (hey-- i should probably read my horrorscope!) turns out they were replacing a railroad crossing, but i managed to get around it through grass and someone's driveway. i was wishing i had a CX right about then. the rest of the ride was pretty uneventful, save for the stopping and the sweating of buckets that had to be done before the final push up the hill right before the office.

the way home actually felt cooler. now, normally i would ride the 7 mi to northampton, catch the bus, throw the bike on the rack (there's space for 2) and have a nice restful 20 minute ride home. as it happens there was one other fella there before me waiting for the bus with HIS bike, and the bus had one on the rack, so i was S.O.L. but i decided that rather than wait the hour for the next bus i would ride the extra 6, maybe 7 miles home but try to take it easy. its all uphill from Noho to Holyoke, which is one of the reasons i take the bus in the first place. it turns out that my bike and i handled it pretty well. there's one 1.5, maybe 2 mile stretch near the end that is rather steeper than the rest, so that kinda kills. but all in all my commute today was the most fun i have had in quite awhile. so total mileage of about 13 miles, i think.

thank god we have a pool!

girljen 07-29-08 07:53 PM

The ride home was sunny, which reminds me that my sunglasses and my sunscreen were in the pannier that I lost. I'll get more at Target tomorrow. Other than that, I declared today "Unofficial Single Speed Day" by just not shifting gears. My legs are sore, in the good way.
