Yeah, I hate it when drivers give you the right of way when in fact they have the right of way. The problem is the person behind the car driver doesn't know there is a bicycle crossing the intersection and they will try to pass the driver and then you get squashed!

awsome commute this morning... I figured out that I was overdressing for my legs. A pair of long johns with my sports pants on top was just fine for 0C. Now I need boots and real gloves. My feet and hands are getting cold.

I too, am not a fan of this DST crapola. Daylight savings time is like trying to make yourself taller by cutting off your head and standing on it.

It was lovely commute this morning. We had mist or some such thing but it's warm enough to be very comfortable with just a light layer of polypropolene. My primary ride is boxed up for a flight tonight, so today was my first commute on my recently converted Peugeot fixie. Approximately 42 minutes which is a very average time for me with 18 gears to choose from. I kinda miss the 30+ mph thrill one can get with the extra gears, but I guess 26 mph stuck in 48x18 is thrilling too.

Madhouse, I like to think of a 60% chance of thunderstorms as a 40% chance of a beautiful day.

Yesterday was a nice day for commuting with dry roads & sunshine but I didn't ride because it was our annual chili cookoff & no way to transport a large crockpot on my bike but we sold a lot of chili & raised some money for cancer research. Today, at 6AM, it was 53F with steady rain & a 20 mph wind from the SW that made for a wet commute. It wasn't much better by lunch time, 50F with steady rain but no wind. A good rain suit made things tolerable & traffic was light. Don

Tonight's ride was wonderful. Like, seriously, seriously good. It was so good, in fact, that when I got home...I turned around, went back, and did it again. 18 miles, longest I've ever ridden in one, er, sitting.

Also, the first time I've ridden in real, actual dark. Not that the trail wasn't well-lit, but there were patches that were actually pitch black. Discovery: My front light is junk. I'll have to get a new one if I want to make a habit out of this.

And I do! I feel so great! =) I have decided, I'm in training to do a century. I'm already almost a fifth of the way there... :)

Hit a car on my way to taking the bike to the LBS for a BB check/overhaul/replacement. Whoopee!

Had to yell at a driver today. At the last intersection crossed before my work turn-in this joker decides to go straight in the right turn lane so that he is uncomfortably close to my right pedal. He slowed and let me ahead after my pointing and bellowing.
Other that that uneventful ride to and from with perfect weather. Never having bought padded bike shorts my B-17 saddle has broken in so that it is not even thought about during the ride.

Becca 10-23-04 02:06 AM

I was going to ride to work. The weather was nearly perfect; slightly overcast, cool (low to mid 60s), negligible wind. I got started, but as I finished my first mile, I realized that the acid reflux during my "night" had caused some trouble for my lungs. Plus my tummy wasn't feeling so great. So I wimped out and took the bus. Fortunately, here in Charlotte they have bike racks on the front of the buses.

I'm feeling better, so I may attempt to ride home. Otherwise, tomorrow afternoon I'll give it another go!

Took a break from the forums last week, so I'll sum up my week's commuting in this post. Beautiful downpour on Monday morning, first decent rain in six months, temperature a perfect 15 degrees C. Showery on Tuesday morning and slightly warmer (doh!). From Wednesday onwards it was total ownage out there as the blocked off streets in Surfers Paradise caused traffic "chaos" (i.e. everyone except me was gridlocked, while I calmly picked my way through the gaps effortlessly). Not a bad week's commuting, but those temperatures got way too high toward the end of the week.

cyclezealot 10-23-04 03:56 AM

Sort of ticked coming into work last night...One end of the bike path leading into work was open..After riding almost 3 miles the other end was chained shut and could not continue on into work without backtracking...If only I had a pair of chain cutters in my tool kit/ I might have gotten arrested. Added about 15 minutes getting to work, so less time for cleaning up...Fall setting in...Temp's only about high 60's. But sunny.
I feel encouraged to do the commute when the weather report says the early AM fog will be light..This is supposed to be the case in the coming morning.

JavaMan 10-23-04 10:12 PM

It rained in Southern California! I guess that means winter is here. So I was only able to ride one day, Friday, last week. First ride with my new chain. Clear skies with temp 55 degrees F in the morning, and about 62 in the afternoon. My legs were a little sore, I think because I lowered my seat about 1/3 inch or 8 mm. It feels more comfortable overall, but I think I should have done it in several steps, not all at once. My odometer turned over 13,000 miles while I was riding, and my bike will be 3 years old at the end of next month.

cyclezealot 10-23-04 10:20 PM

I commuted home from work this past morning...Felt pretty tired after 12.5 hours of work..Yes, you can fall asleep on the handlebars! Usually, catch yourself pretty quick..Just happens once in awhile..
But found a new sport to keep my ride home interesting... There are political yard signs everywhere for the pending election. My new sport to stay attentive.
Spitting at the yard sign of my political Unchoice. I do not think that vandalism? Some signs were So close to the bike lane.
Must have had enough fluids within me to spit at maybe 10 signs..Think I only made a bull's eye Once !....Having a full water bottle helped.
Heah, it kept me awake. For the worst candidate, I worked on technique...Too much mass or less for velocity... Took about 6 attempts before I came close at about 12 MPH...

Alphie 10-24-04 08:36 PM

Staying awake can be a challenge sometimes. We attended the R.E.M. show last night. i had to be at a 6 am meeting this morning then go back to work a split shift 10-7. Hoo boy. Did drive to the meeting and returned to work on the bike.

Chris L 10-24-04 09:31 PM

Riding through the debris-covered road in Surfers Paradise after that stupid car race yesterday. Something of an obstacle course, but then, most of my evening commutes are like that anyway. Still, I was about the only one able to get through it.

Becca 10-25-04 01:17 AM

I'm still having trouble riding home from work, but after a 12 1/2 hour shift, I'm not terribly stressed about it.

I did ride to work Sunday afternoon, including a side-trip to stop at Captain D's to get some fish for supper! The ride was *perfect* - temps in the high 50's, sunny, light traffic (except for Uptown, where everyone was getting all ga-ga about the Panther's game), and I thoroughly enjoyed the almost 9 mile trip. Even got to work 45 minutes early!

JavaMan 10-25-04 08:12 AM

I left at 5:20 AM this morning so it was still dark when I got to work at 6:30! First time I rode the whole morning in the dark. There were very few cars the first half of my ride. If one were opposed to rolling through red lights, one would likely reconsider at that time of morning! I myself blew through plenty. Temp was 60 F, had a slight tailwind, which turned into a moderate headwind when I hit the ocean. I was wearing a vest and arm warmers, which turned out to be just right.

Saw 4 wrong-way cyclists with no lights along the way. If one of these guys were to get hit, would that really be a bad reflection on the rest of us? I don't think so. People in cars probably think we're geniuses compared to them.

Just before I got to San Clemente I saw a red blinker ahead and poured it on to catch up with him. I did catch him, and waved just before I turned inland for 2 miles of climbing. Not too smart. Especially with a heavy backpack. I usually bring clothes and food in my car on Mondays, but it is supposed to rain tomorrow (again!) so I rode today.

after what seemed like weeks of clouds, the sun came up this morning after a clear, chilly night. but south of twon there was fog, which interrupted my plans to take pictures of the commute. i'll get things sorted out eventually, and post them in the appropriate place.

Merryish 10-25-04 08:40 AM

Gorgeous day today, after a gorgeous Sunday, after a week of rain and gloom. The ride would have been great if I hadn't had to do it with a TiVo strapped to my back (long story). But at least I don't have to take it with me back north, so with the winds from the south and the sun and the lake as beautiful as they were this morning, I'm thinking the ride home's going to be a blowout. :)

BenyBen 10-25-04 09:15 AM

5C this morning. Not a single bike on the path this morning. I slept only 3 hours last night, so I went out backwards... 10 minutes into the ride I was awake. Now I'm tired, but I am more awake and focused then I would've been if I cabbed in.

Tree Trunk 10-25-04 09:38 AM

After two weeks commuting on the mountain bike, I was back on my hybrid this morning. My legs are thanking me. Hats off to all who faithfully commute on a MB. I'm not sure I could commute on my MB 5 days a week. I was tired out by Thursday each of the last two weeks.

Nice morning with a gorgeous sunrise. Loved it!! Needed the pick me up after my precious Cardinals lost two to Boston this past weekend.

funbun 10-25-04 09:42 AM

40% change of rain today. Mostly cloudy. It's been that way for a couple of days now.

funbun 10-25-04 10:32 AM

That's exactly how my crash happened last week. I need raingear!

Zin 10-25-04 10:34 AM

25F, a SSW breeze, and clear skies. Much more traffic than normal today for some reason. I rode the Jamis. Supposed to rain/snow Wed-Thur so have to ride it when I can. :D

SammieLu 10-25-04 11:43 AM

Dry, 45F, crusing down the .7mi hill (350ft) was COLD. Good quick ride in today (short 2 mi route from a friend's house), barely awake when I got to work! Looking forward to a normal 10mi home tonight.
