My wife and I work in the same agency but on different schedules usually. Usually her commute involves a combined drive/light rail trip. But yesterday her schedule synched with mine and I was able to convince her to ride in with me.

The weather was perfect and I took her on the calmest route I could think of. She tends to ride too far into the door zone, but I just mentioned it once. I didn't want to nag her. (Nor did I say anything about her cadence, gear selection, etc... ;))

It was a great day.

Arrgh. Stupid me. Collided with a pedestrian on a pathway through campus this afternoon.
I always go a safe speed, knowing this could happen, and I always announce my presence
loudly and well in advance, but today was not my lucky day. The student was very
apologetic, and seemed genuinely concerned about me. She was also rather cute, so it
wasn't that bad... :D However, the wreck did tear a small chunk out of my Motobecane's
22 year-old one-piece faux leather bar wrap, so now I'm going to sob... the bike was pristine.

Well this morning was comfortable but uneventful; this afternoon it spit rain on me all the way home but most importantly the number of bicycle commuters in my building doubled today. Now we have 2. So Mr. unknown Kona riding commuter I salute you.

Great rides all week and today was no exception. Good company, good weather, good speed. Tomorrow will close two weeks of "no excuses" 5-day biking.

I had an amazing run on the way in this morning, almost 9 miles without hitting a red light! Never had that happen before, it was just some freaky combination of traffic density keeping the gates open plus a boosted rate of travel 'cause a fellow biker was hoovered onto my rear wheel.

I made two technical errors though that kept today from being a perfect 10. On the way in said cyclist went on through a yellow that I should have taken too. Instead I left a stripe, nearly locked 'em up to stop and it suprised me as much as it did her. Just the wrong split-second choice.

Then on the way home I had my first near-topple since I started riding clipless last week. Was going uphill through a slow-you-down gate on the multi-use-path, with two riders behind me and one coming towards. I got sloppy and too slow and had to YANK both feet out of the cleats to avoid falling. None too suave!

But damn, who else looks forward to going to work as much as the bike commuter?? Not many.

No commute today! Heavy rain, windy and cold 50 deg F. (N.East Scotland) Hoping for an improvement tomorrow. Have'nt done a five day set this summer!!

vtjim 07-29-05 06:31 AM

High 50Fs and sunny this morning. I saw a bunny rabbit. :o

I need to tighten my brake cables this weekend. That is all.

No commute today as it's my day off.

In my approximately two months of commuting, I've only had two rude encounters. The first time, I had only been commuting for a couple of weeks and had read some posts on here about being sure to enjoy the ride. So I took a deep breath, looked around, a little, listened to the birds, etc., and then a huge diesel utility truck came up behind me, rode my wheel going around a curve, and finally blasted it's horn at me.

The second time, yesterday, I was riding along, thinking about how I had only had one rude encounter in my two months of commuting, when a guy in a car passing me going the OTHER direction, yelled A**HOLE at me for absolutely no other reason than the fact that I was there.

Both times, I had to laugh at the timing of these events! :D

Commute today was cool -- the wife wanted to do a bunch of miles on the Greenway on her own (she's on vacation now, lucky!) so she got up early to go with me most of the way to work on continue on her own. Sure, it added nearly 15 minutes to my commute (she can't keep up... yet!) but it was well worth it. :)

Excellent commute today. Wonderful weather after last night's thunderstorm; a cool breeze, rain dripping
off tree branches, overcast sky... great. No more 100+ degree days... (I hope!)

The last friday of every month, we have a 'Bicyclist Breakfast' for commuters at a neigborhood restaurant.
This morning, we were talking about organizing a criterium in our downtown, which is currently
undergoing major roadwork to make the streets more bike/ped friendly. That would be excellent... our
two neighboring towns, Raleigh and Chapel Hill have road races, but Durham has never had anything.

A group of us were also talking about organizing a bike co-op downtown after the road construction mess
is over... that would be an interesting development, also. There are 3 or 4 of us with garages/sheds full
of bike parts and tools, and we're talking about combining our talents and resources (and our shops) to
help fill a niche.

I'm glad we started doing these breakfasts (only been a few months, now) - it's a great opportunity to
meet other cyclists, and to network and brainstorm about shared goals.

GTcommuter 07-29-05 07:40 AM

No commute today because I'm straight off to Lyle Lovett and his Large Band right after work tonight! Then on Monday off to Austin for a couple of weeks vacation. And Lance just won his 7th Tour. I'm all about Texas right now.

skijoring 07-29-05 07:50 AM

Nice temperatures again today, very low winds and humidity. Makes a happy VT commuter. This is the VT summer I had been hoping for! Let it continue...Made some front derailleur adjustments yesterday, and lengthened the ride home to 15 miles through some bucolic environs. Gotta see that again after work today!

bcritch 07-29-05 08:52 AM

What a nice ride. Gray skies, wet road, misty drizzle and in the 70's. It has been quite a stretch of time of high tempratures and humidity. Today's ride was a nice relief!

coenan 07-29-05 09:37 AM

I have a rather short commute (less than 2 miles). However, last night I lifted weights (a leg workout) and
my legs were aching the whole way....lol

caloso 07-29-05 09:52 AM

Ugh. My legs felt like they were made of stone this morning. Normally I wouldn't care on a Friday but I'm racing this weekend. I think I better cancel my ride tomorrow morning.

I had a really nice ride with very low traffic because a train was stopped across 21st Street, blocking all those cars coming up from Freeport. Too bad for them. Nice for me.

oboeguy 07-29-05 02:48 PM

I have to add something to today's report. Having taken the longer-but-more-car-free route to work today with the wife, we went down a very steep descent to get to the Greenway in our 'hood (I usually pick it up 4-5 miles into the ride in the morning). It made me realize just how lazy (and stupid?) I've been about maintaining my brake cable tension. So I took some time today at work to unfold the bike and do some cable adjustment (I'd already maxed-out the adjustment knobs on the levers). Good thing I carry my multi-tool with me just about every day!

bikebuddha 07-30-05 11:14 AM

No commute today but I did have to run a few errands but the weather was cooler than it has been all week so I turned it into a longer ride. Pedaling back from midtown it started to rain a little and when I turned up paces mill I got my second wind and flew up the hill. Stopped by the library in Vinnings before heading home the whole time thinking what a great ride, except traffic on weekends is just as crazy if not crazier than the weekdays.

froody 07-30-05 01:29 PM

Yesterday I got in my first real commute of the year. Did the 12 miles both ways and felt great. Also nice to notice that some of the worst roads have been repaved since I last biked it. The weather was good, and my back seems to have taken it well. I'm shooting for a few weeks of once-a-week before building up to every-day again.

the weather has kind of broken in jersey, but not so much. did nice long slow ride with my new fixed from mahwah to ridgewood, enjoyed the times and got some homework done. at first i was scared of the hills, but then i just ****ing started powering up them and it was like i was born to do this. and im geared 52/16. oh yeah baby, life is so good.

eastbaybob 08-01-05 09:47 AM

Good weather today, overcast and low 60's. The big change in the commute is that I bought a cat eye cycle computer. Today's commute was 1.86 miles and I did that in 10 minutes and 47 seconds. Top speed was 20.0 mph on a screaming twisting down hill.

caloso 08-01-05 10:06 AM

A stereotype in real life: On 21st Street for several blocks this morning I rode behind and alongside a petite 30-something blond woman at the wheel of an immense Chevy Tahoe paying intermittent attention to the road as she dialed her mobile phone.

At least she wasn't trying to drink or apply her makeup at the same time....

luckysnafu 08-01-05 02:22 PM

After driving home to meet my gf for lunch, I rode my bike back to work. Had a nice ride, but rode into a strong headwind the whole way here. Hopefully I have a nice tail wind on the way home, but knowing my luck it will be blowing at me...

* jack * 08-01-05 03:40 PM

They finished some construction on campus, and opened up the access point I used to take,
which had been closed for around 6 months. The best part about it is the new path they
installed, replacing the old one which had busted-up concrete and a b*tch of a hill.
I had been waiting forever for the construction to be done, my detour had me taking some
less-friendly roads in to work. Jeez, I'm such a dork... excited about a strip of asphalt :p

Raim 08-02-05 12:37 AM

Tuesday 6am and still very cool air coming from the north, 8 deg C .
Had to avoid the young rabbits on the downhills this morning, not good at 48km.
They dart out from the verges so quick like they were waiting for me!!
Not one car today in 9 miles. Good for me (and the rabbits).
