Fell off for the first time today.
A water bottle was being blown across the lane by the wind; I saw it and managed to avoid it. Until it was ricocheted back into my lane by hitting the tyre of the car in the next lane, and under my front wheel. I managed to unclip and get my feet down as the bike went down, so all that hit the ground were the handlebar and pedal on one side. Unscathed. Not one of the people at the bus stop ten feet away did more than glance in my direction. *rolleyes* |
Good rides all week so far. I was a bit slow today due to soreness, 'cause of over-exerting on the way home yesterday. There was a racer type with the aero bars and the insouciant manner who did not even acknowledge my presence when i said "good evening" at a stoplight, and whom I then proceded to pace for six miles till he pulled a right-turn fakie at a red and slipped away. Good fun, but I paid for it today :D
NWS suggests the nice summer weather here in the Bay Area will continue through the weekend. I'm drinking it in... |
Good ride to work and home. If it wasn't for the ride, I probably couldn't stand work. I think one of the better parts of the day is the ride to work or the time I spend with my family. I just wish work would be a little better. Have a good night.

Humid, not so hot. Very little wind out there...overcast. Saw some mourning doves, and smelled a skunk.

I've changed my route somewhat the last couple of days. Having had a rash of broken spokes (see thread over in Mechanical) I decided I need to avoid a bumpy section of the Hudson Greenway. I now go all the way to 72nd St on Riverside Drive, whereas I used to enter the Greenway at 96th St. Sure, it's a little goofy to take the Greenway all of a mile and a half, but it beats the streets (Riverside kinda ends around there, so busy streets it would be). I find I enjoy the new route more because it's less bone jarring and I'm less worried about my spokes breaking. :)
For the return trip I'm going to try something even weirder. I'll take the Greenway to 72nd, exit onto Riverside and ride it until I pick-up the Greenway again at the water treatment plant (past 125th). Seems weird, right? It is, but it allows me to climb the monster uphill from Manhattan's lowest point (river level) to nearly its highest natural point at the end of my commute -- great training! I'm not sure what I'll do on Fridays while the summer is still on, because Riverside gets a lot of highway overflow on Friday afternoons. |

Great ride to work. Saw some other people cycling tonight, just some kids riding their BMX bikes. I hope the rain holds off for another day. Have a good night.

Fun morning commute today. Overcast and cool air.
I was behind another roadie for almost the entire ride. He wasn't very fast but I wasn't in a hurry. It was one of those things where I could do a few crank revolutions, coast, and repeat. :) We were meandering along and I spotted something coming up fast behind us. Slowing for a stop sign, a VERY fit woman on an MTB came up next to me. We exchanged hellos. There were people on the trail so she got between me and the other roadie and we had a little peloton. Eventually she must have gotten bored because she passed the roadie. Then the race was on. It was hilarious to watch these two. The guy accelerated and tried to stay behind her, but gave up. I was just hanging out further back, watching this. Right as we were getting into Burlington, the woman was very far ahead, and the roadie sprinted. I stayed behind him and we were cruising along at around 25mph. He finally took a left off the trail. I went to the waterfront to take a picture with my new cell phone. (Geek that I am.) Still wishing I could get a commuting group together... Want to see the picture I took? (I shrunk it. Quality is poor.) |
I saw two sidewalk cyclists today...Yesterday, I fixed another flat at work before heading home. Two weeks, two flats. They usually come in threes, right?
|
3rd day. I even biked to the bank to make a car payment. How ironic is that. lol
It was a little hotter today that earlier in the week but honestly didn't feel it. |
After a 5 week break because of this:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...1&page=1&pp=25 I was able to ride to work today. And even though the weather was hot and sticky it felt great. It seemed like all the lights were turning green for me, all the drivers were behaving, and it felt like I was floating on air. |

Not a long commute, but I do it daily & take lunch rides - so I still squeeze the miles in. There's somebody else on the Forums (Mr. Shadow) who lives on Miami Blvd. |
On Capitol Avenue I was passed by an ancient Vespa. And for a moment I thought about accelerating on to his draft but I was hit by the gas vapors and thought I'd probably choke to death.
|
Overcast and cool but otherwise a great commute (9.5 miles) to work this morning. The fog and clouds are burning off so it'll be perfect weather when I ride home this afternoon.

Yesterday was my first "real" bike commute. I've ridden to school before, but this seemed a little more real since it's actually work and a little bit further than campus was. Overall it was a good experience. The route I have to take is longer than the direct route I used to take by car, but still only about 4-5 miles, so really not bad at all. I was a bit tired, as I work in the stock room at Pottery Barn Kids, unloading trucks and moving furniture boxes all day, and then riding back home right after that. I did notice that I thought the route was flat, and it most definitely is not!
I don't know how long I'll be commuting - my car literally drowned the other day, and I haven't decided what to do about it. I did enjoy the commute though, so I'll probably keep it up for a while :) |
I feel terrible but I must confess that I've had an "all drive week" this week. Fatigue from; last weekend's mountain biking, sore knee (again), mid-week party, and finally, tennis last night have all conspired to keep me off of the bike the entire week. I'll probably ride some this weekend and definitely be back on my commuter schedule next week.
|
It's just my third day doing the 12 mile halfway commute. But this morning it felt like I was cycling in mud (I do believe that I had a dragging brake pad). It was warmer and I was a bit crispy by the time I got to work. I'm looking forward to taking it easy on the way home.

:D mjw16 is hereby cast out of the circle of light and excommunicated from bikeforums.net. enjoy exile!

Todays commute was fine, I went to work real early and conditions were fine.
For some reason work was busy when I first got here and was unable to post. But I made it another week without commuting by car. I feel even better about that now after seeing gas is around 2.74 here at the moment. Have a good weekend. |

Congrats on your first commute. It only gets easier from here! |
I really do not enjoy the Friday commute home. Everyone and their mother wants to yell at me to "Get the **** off the road!" I try to resist the temptation, but I sometimes raise the bird, especially when they honk in an attempt to scare you, which is quite illegal in Tennessee. It's good to be home. :)

Wednesday afternoon: rode home through a nice thunderstorm. Lightning was close-but-not-too-close, and the rain was coming down hard. Quite cathartic, really.
Thursday: Didn't commute, thanks to a certain feline requiring a visit to the vet's office for vaccinations. Appointment was 4pm, and due to a few meetings at work I knew I wasn't going to be able to leave the office at the required 2pm to get home and to the vet's in time. This morning: Nice. Cool. Fast. |
Hang in there! Soon they won't have any horns to honk and they'll have to cuss you as you whiz by them as they trudge along the road to work.
|
skijoring,
I feel bad about it, I really do, especially given the price of gas and lack of exercise, etc. I, however, didn't know that I'd be risking bikeforums exile. I'll be back 100% next week, I promise. :-) |
6 days in a row riding, and 5 of those commuting. Traffic was heavy tonight, work was bad all week, but I start my vacation tonight at 11 PM. Hopefully I'll get a lot of riding in. Have a good night.
