Had a good long weekend vacation to Durango CO. area this weekend (thursday-Sunday), but REALLY missed my bike. Kept seeing all these people riding there bikes in the crisp fall weather they were having Friday and Saturday and wished I could have brough my with me. Got back home yesterday at 5:00 and took an hour long ride INTO a storm, it was coming south, towards my house, and I rode north, just because I could, and call me crazy I like riding in the rain.

I rode till it started raining on me, then turned around to ride home, turned on my blinky when I turned around, and somewhere between there and home it fell off :-( So if anyone is in Albuquerque and found a blinky on the bike path on Tramway, between Manual and Central, shoot me an e-mail, I'ld like to have it back :-) ben_inglis@hotmail.com

Ride in this morning was pretty cold, and sweaty. I'm still waiting on my Pearl Izumi Vagabond Jacket (should get here tomorrow) I can't wait to have something nice and breathable to wear. Right now I'm wearing a crappy windbreaker that is more like a sauna once I start riding. Bike mount for my photon fusion should be here today or tomorrow as well, but i'm kinda used to haveing it on my head...i like pointing it at people :-) I might just see if I can modify my bike clamp to mount to my helmet, as the "head mount" is kinda cumbersome. I did wear my "hot noggon" skull cap under my helmet today, and BOY was it nice. I bought it as an afterthought, but I'm really glad I did.

Cooling down in Vermont. This morning was my first sub-50F commute. (Jacket and shorts.)

On Friday night I had an unscheduled after-work pub visit and it started to rain while we were inside, so I got nice and wet on the ride home. Fun ride though. One guy on a bicycle was heading the other way on the trail. No lights. No reflectors. Dark clothing. I'm glad one of us had lights or who knows how hard we might have hit one another? In hindsight I should have yelled at him. Oh well.

Good ride in. Took it easy with a friend. Barely broke a sweat. Had to give a guy a patch.. he'd walked his bike a few miles because he didnt have a way to fix it. Bet he wont do that again :)

truman 10-10-05 11:21 AM

soggychillywet.

still beats driving.

Tree Trunk 10-10-05 11:22 AM

It's been under 50 F lately for the morning commute. Something sick in me really likes the cold weather riding that is around the corner. Then again, now it takes more time to get dressed for the ride and I hate that. I also look even more ridiculous in tights than I do in bike shorts!

Missed my Saturday morning recreational ride the last two weekends. I can really tell the difference on Monday morning. The last two Mondays have been sluggish to say the least.

I'd hate to see that! :D Missed you at RAGBRAI this year. We had a great time!

good ride home... all alone! Made it home 25 minutes faster than when my friend was riding with me. He was supposed to ride home too but said he couldnt because of "an injury he couldn't discuss"

Later he told me his nuts were just way too sore to ride. :roflmao:

He might try to ride in with me again in the morning. This is the third time he's bailed on the ride home. He's seat hieght/angle looks ok.. so I'm not sure what the deal is. He's going to look into a saddle to help with his "problem." he's been riding with me a few times and this is the first I've heard him complain of this. If he really is in pain I hope he gets it resolved.

The new guy at work asked me if I missed my bike today, assuming I'd driven due to the "cold" weather. I just looked at him, realized he hadn't been with us long enough to know I commute year-round, weather-be-damned, and told him the ride in was great. I'm sure he doesn't have a clue how not cold it really was this morning as he drove cocooned and all alone in his five passenger, V-8 powered behemoth.

One more detail, but maybe worth writing about. I found a great new place for the bike. Inside. Out of the way. Visible every time I walk past the lobby doors, which is not unheard of as the men's room is on the other side. Maybe that will be motivation to keep hydrated!

Welcome, halfstep!

Dark, dark, dark this morning. I'm gonna have to break down and get a brighter light. It was garbage day in the neighborhood I ride through and guess where they all put their garbage cans? Yup...in the bike lane. It sucks! But I didn't hit any of them...I came close a couple of times. Why do people think I'm strange for riding in the dark? There are so many other reasons to think I'm strange! It's one of those things...am I strange because I ride in the dark, or do I ride in the dark because I'm strange? ...ummmmmmm

Coming home was another one of those too cool, too warm days. I didn't suit up...I'm glad.

Well, this is my second commuting post here though I've been commuting for about 4 months now. This morning, there was this shiny sun, rode to downtown with a smile in my face... a cutie blinked her eye at me...

Afternoon was cloudy and rainy. Anyway, I took my bike and headed home. Almost hit a 100 years old pedestrian which was walking in the bike path. A mile after that another old lady was complaining about bikes being in the sidewalk. (Note: the bike path is on the sidewalk). Oh, and a driver insulted me...

Even with all that, I'd ride instead of driving anyday.

Well I'm now on my second week of commuting to work.... :)

Traffic was light this morning, pedestrians and cars and bobcats...

Not sure if it was my rear tire tune up over the weekend or some new found strength, but I averaged 15.3mph to work and 15.4mph back on my 11 mile each way commute. Ahead of my 15mph goal, which I thought was aggressive given the dozen or so stop lights I have to manage.

My 15+ year old crank is starting to make this awful creaking noise. :( Need to investigate. I hope it's rebuildable.

This just in!
Gearing up to 48x15 gets me in to work quicker! Good job, legs.

Caught a cold/flu over the weekend, but I figured the fresh air/sweat would do good.
It's getting to the point where longlseeves become the standard issure around here.
And soon, raingear....damn nor'easters

jyossarian 10-10-05 08:57 PM

Ride home was fine. Kinda wished I brought a jacket when I left the office and was glad I didn't when I got home cuz I pushed it to warm up faster and got home in good time. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and me with no waterproof pants. :(

ahpook 10-10-05 09:29 PM

Today was my first day bike-commuting on my Nishiki fixed-gear conversion -- A bit more work but a hell of a lot of fun, especially pumping up the two little hills. Didn't see any other bikers though, which is odd considering how nice the weather has been lately.

spidercyclist 10-10-05 11:05 PM

Good ride to work and fast ride home . Had two other bikes in the bike rack today , at work . I hope the rest of the week is better at work then today was . But at least the ride was fun . Have a good nite .

stockholm 10-11-05 12:15 AM

First commute on the new bike.

And first commute in two months.

The bike is a Sirrus Sport and I absoultely LOVE IT. I need to get a new sadle though, because this plastic/rubber thing they've put on is frigging awful. The ride in was wonderful per ususal: really dark, kind of cold (gloves mandatory), and not many people on the road.

It'll be interesting on the way back home, since my legs aren't what they were two months ago.

Now I'll check out the thread on lights, because the ones I've got wasn't enough.

oboeguy 10-11-05 06:19 AM

No commute today. I'm a little worn-out from a long weekend of hiking and riding. I'll be back tomorrow, no doubt.

Bike_UK 10-11-05 06:29 AM

A bus tried to kill me 100 yards from home (overtook me, then realised it had overshot the bus stop and pulled into the curb braking hard  ), so after that i stayed in front and near enough to the middle of the lane that it wasn't going to be getting past me again very easily :D

And i didn't even swear at the driver!

truman 10-11-05 07:18 AM

About 10% faster on my new/old 10 speed steel Miyata frankenbike, than on the 27 speed 29er with knobbies. Perfectly cool, calm morning, but really dark. Bet I coulda gone faster, but for the factors of :
A - "Man, road bikes have SKINNY tires! I betcha practically anything will pop one of these boys, I better slow down." and
B - "Jebus, this light is weak, weak, weak, I have no idea if that's a shadow, a puddle, or a hole... I can't wait for my lights to get here..."

jyossarian 10-11-05 07:27 AM

Ride in was going great! I had the bus lane all to myself and was crusing along at 18 mph when I finally caught up to the bus which wasn't moving and there were no paths in any other lane I could get to for me to squeeze by. So I hopped the sidewalk, rode on that to the next corner, then kept on going. Was off my usual time by almost 2 mins! Damn traffic! Must've been my rain coat acting like a parachute. Yeah! that's it!

HEY NOW!!!!

It was tough not riding RAGBRAI this year. People ask me about it all the time (last night, for example) and I hate saying I didn't ride it this year.

****ty weather in No Va this morning, drizzly and overcast. I was all togged up in my rain gear, including new Pearl Izumi shoe covers, which took me a while to figure out how to get on, but seemed the business. I took it fairly easy coming in, so it took a little under two hours door-to-door. I stopped to delayer a little and adjust the helmet, and of course wait for the lights to change at Maple Ave in Vienna.

I was surprised how few cyclists I saw on the W&OD this morning. This was the first time I'd done the commute the whole way in in the morning (I usually do it midday or mid afternoon). I'd heard there were bike jams and the like.

Oh, I'd degreased the chain yesterday, and put White Lightning on it. The bike was eerily quiet and smooth.

Quickbeam 10-11-05 08:51 AM

Lights and cold weather gear now. I'm not a big fan of riding in the dark and cold but oh well. Good commute into work this morning. Yesterday morning I stopped at a four-way stop and signaled left, there was a motorist at the four-way straight across from me going straight and he was at the stop sign before I was. I did a track stand and waited for him to go (like I'm supposed to as far as I know). He got all angry and wildly waved me through while yelling "WELL??? GO!!!" He was yelling something at me when I went by too but I don't know what. You just can't please some motorists. They complain when cyclists don't stop for stop signs (rightfully so) and then some of 'em get upset when you do stop. Whatcha gonna do?

jimmuter 10-11-05 09:13 AM

Pleasant temperature and a little misty. It has felt more like Oregon here the past few days instead of NC. I decided a while ago that I like all weather. Each type has merits and I choose to see those instead of the negatives. It makes for a pleasant ride every day.

mtessmer 10-11-05 09:53 AM

I haven't posted for a while. It's autumn alright, 38F this morning and dark most of the way in. I had a wonderful commute, I took the long way and truly enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. I should get some extra mileage in at lunch time and my ride home this afternoon.
