Yesterday afternoon I saw 97 on my cyclocomputer. It was fine unless I dropped below 15MPH, and then I could feel the heat. So I kept going fast. :) When I got home, I became good and uncomfortable.

I didn't get to bed until after midnight last night (had my "dual night" flight instruction!) and so I was tired this morning. I still made okay time. It was warm and somewhat humid.

Supposed to cool off later today. I hope.

diff_lock2 07-18-06 07:05 AM

TOO windy...

FormerBMX'er 07-18-06 07:39 AM

I really need to learn to slow down. My plan is to tool into work so I don't get too sweaty, but that never seems to work. There's usually a couple of spots where I need to pick up the pace, but once I'm up to speed I just keep rolling.

It's suppose to Thunder Storm later, so that's my excuse for not riding after work today :D

luckysnafu 07-18-06 08:10 AM

Unventful ride in this morning. Warm again and I was drenched by the time I got to work. Saw a couple of other cyclists out. Could reach 100 this afternoon which will be great for my soccer game tonight.

RonH 07-18-06 08:10 AM

Another hot one in the deep south this morning. Only saw a few commuters. I wonder if the heat is causing many of the new "high gas prices" commuters to rethink the idea of commuting?

Some of them just don't know what they're doing. Last night as I was unlocking my bike at the supermarket a bike commuter pulled up to lock his bike. He was wearing jeans (not cut off) and a t-shirt. IMHO a sane and knowledgeable cyclist would not wear than combination in 93F heat.

WhiteRabbit 07-18-06 08:14 AM

A bit wet. Looks like it rained last night, and might again today. Maybe I should rethink getting some fenders.

pinkrobe 07-18-06 08:15 AM

It rained hard overnight, cooling the city off considerably. I was still able to ride in a t-shirt, but it's almost jacket weather. I forgot to switch my bike to 42x14 last night, so maybe I'll do that tonight.

MyPC8MyBrain 07-18-06 08:16 AM

Yesterday the wind was brewing up for huge tailwind...had it as a headwind on the way in. By the time I left the office it died off, not a puff of a breeze. Dang, i hate when that happens. A huge black nasty storm was rolling over the hills so I rode with much speed to beat it home. Good thing too, huge hail and rain for an hour once I got there. It was quite nasty.

This morning everything was nice and clean. Temp were nice and cool, most likely a result of the storm.

The GF donated me her Nano because she won the super duper video Ipod in a sales contest at work. [She rules!] It was nice to have tunes on the way in...Although I think I may have to nuke the Norah Jones off that thing :) Seems to have cut some time off the ride too. I ordered the I-ride speakers to mount on the bars. We'll see how those work out. Actually the ear buds didn't lessen my ability to hear the traffic behind. I think that they cut down the wind buffeting so much that they might actually improve ability to hear. Hmmm

jyossarian 07-18-06 08:21 AM

Overslept and rode in a 1/2 hr. later than I usually do. Traffic wasn't too bad, and while it was hot, it's not too bad when I'm moving. Of course, once I stop, that's when the sweat starts pouring.

Saw Steve Harvey walking past my building before I left yesterday.

P.S. Norah Jones rulez!

A jacket in mid-July? You gotta move farther south. ;)

vtjim 07-18-06 09:35 AM

I forgot to mention what happened on my ride home yesterday. It was in the 90Fs. I was on the MUP. I saw a couple of young boys ahead, each carrying super soakers. (High-volume water "guns" if you don't know.)

As I approached they said, "You want some?" :D I said, "Sure!"

So they let me have it. Funny. They were spraying other cyclists and runners, too. Everybody was smiling. Cool kids...

bloodhound 07-18-06 12:17 PM

Still doing it...

Commuted 8 out of 10 days since I bought my bike!!!

Let's see, the savings would be...

(((3.8mi * 2) / 10mpg) * $3.24) * 8days = $19.70 saved in gas!!!

Well, today I really felt my legs burn. My thigh muscles were really pushing. When I got to work, I realized I was 6 minutes earlier than usual. The ride felt really good.

Weather was nice and cool. Nice morning.

e_a_olson 07-18-06 12:28 PM

I forgot to check in this morning, but that's because I was absolutely exhausted. I have been thinking about doing a triathlon, and so I stopped by the pool to do some laps, and then hop on my bike to get to work. Seemed like good practice for the swim-to-bike change. Well, I did 250m in the pool, and the commute wasn't too bad until I hit the hills. By the time I got to my desk, my legs were jelly, and I could not even imagine running after those six miles. So if I can add a mile and a half run to that, I'm almost halfway to where I need to be.

robtown 07-18-06 12:58 PM

Very muggy at 6am this morning - I could feel dew forming on my arms. Once I got moving it was much cooler. but my gear was totally soaked when I got to work. 98F and climbing at 3pm in Northern VA

juliebeanpie 07-18-06 01:32 PM

Nice ride in this morning, still vaguely cool in the park. People swimming in Big Chico Creek at 7:30 this morning. Supposed to be 106° today, happy to be an office worker on a days like these. Oh, keep meaning to mention there's a commuter across the street from my office who rides her cruiser to work in high heeled stiletto sandals ! Crazy! I need to take a picture, but I don't want to freak her out...

Mr_H 07-18-06 01:54 PM

Howdy there...I'm a newcomer here (See? My second post).
I've been commuting to work...throwing in my commute info for kicks
Mid Michigan is HOT right now. The morning commute is great, a light breeze (Even though I'm 30 minutes from the Lakes, it's noticeable), light traffic. Probably mid 70s. This evenings commute is going to be a bit worse: Mid 80s, heavier winds (Last nights winds all but pushed me into reverse).

:)

knucklesandwich 07-18-06 02:46 PM

Not that it needs to be said, but...hot. And hotter on the way home tonight. My commutes have gotten faster and faster of late- dunno if I'm getting more comfortable on the new bike but each day seems like a quicker and quicker ride. I guess you could say I'm dialed in now, sizewise, gearwise, and otherwise.

* jack * 07-18-06 03:21 PM

Has anybody mentioned how hot it is?

roadron1 07-18-06 03:47 PM

come to TX .it hoooooooot and hoooooot

Dickseacup 07-18-06 04:35 PM

The ride in this morning was cooler than yesterday, only 68. The ride home was cooler, as well, only 82. The roads are covered with little limbs and sticks and other detritus from last night's storm, though. One of the roads on my commute was closed due to two trees laying across the road. I went around the road closed sign, jumped the curb, went through the park, came back down the curb and continued, though. I wonder if I'll be able to do that when I get the slicks on the rims.

I was 'confronted' by the cow-orker I mentioned in an earlier commute report (the guy who drives the SUV and thinks cyclists are less-than-manly) as I went out the back door in my bike shorts, wicking T-shirt, cycling shoes, ankle socks and helmet. He was not impressed with my fashion choices. The high point of my ride was when the self-same manly man pulled up behind me and laid on his horn (although, I didn't know until the next part that it was him). He then proceeded to pull up next to me, roll his window down, swerve closer and yell, 'Get a fscking car!!!!!' Then he laughed maniacally, stomped on the gas and tore off in to the distance.

Needless to say, I was impressed. Not. He has managed to browbeat one of the other two commuters in our department in to not commuting. :( His nickname is 'Iceman,' although he doesn't know it. 'Fscktard' would be more appropriate.

EDIT: And sprinting away from a stoplight, I didn't get my right foot clipped in before trying to mash on the pedal (CrankBros Mallet C). The platform rotated, my leg dropped and now I sport my first commuting wound.

Don't let f-tard get you down. He sounds like a real prize . Real men ride bikes :D.

So he's manly cuz he never drives his SUV off-road and insulates himself from danger in a 2.5 ton coccoon?!? Man, he must not have a pair.

Took the extra long way home and dreaded stopping cuz it meant over-heating while I waited for the light. I also had to conserve my one bottle of water and was dripping wet and thirsty when I got home. A cold shower while the A/C cooled the place off helped a lot. Think I'll stay in the rest of the day.

Oh, on the contrary. Just ask him. I could go into great detail on how he earned the (stealth) nickname 'Iceman,' but that might be saying too much.

His antics and attitudes don't get me down. I'm the kind of person that, if something I'm doing pisses him off to the point that he has to get aggressive in telling me about it, I'll continue out of sheer stubbornness and spite. In fact, I might even ramp it up. Especially seeing as it has no direct impact, that I can see, on him.

For the life of me, though, I can not fathom why he is so threatened by guys on bicycles. Like my choice to take advantage of some 'free' exercise (time-wise, certainly not effort-wise...heh) somehow diminishes him. Very, very bizarre. But, like my great-grandfather used to say, "It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round. And not one of the bastards is missing." Heh; that made me smile just thinking of it.

Lot's Knife 07-18-06 05:38 PM

Harrowing.

I have to keep reminding myself: When you're faced with the choice of an overpass or an underpass, take the under. I thought I was going to die on the 22nd Street bridge.
