Friday night's ride home was ick-o-rama... Rain, cold, slushy ice balls falling from the sky, cold, windy and cold. Actually it was only like 35 or so, but the rain, wind, and ugliness falling from the sky made it feel worse. My cow-orkers were trying to talk me out of it, but I told them it will all be over in 17 minutes. It was, but is was a long 17 minutes.
On the flip side, this morning was 36f, but calm and clear [and dark] at 5:30am. Roads were pretty barren and that made for a nice commute. It is a tad spooky by the edge of the dark woods though. Something is out there [or im just freakin out over the thought of it]

Two hours (one return bathroom break, three return trips to the garage, one wheel change, one chain link removal, six stops to loosen tight link, one stop to remove too many layers) to do a six mile chain-skipping ride this morning. Mondays suck!

Pretty nice except the part where I got to watch some idiot on a brakeless Pista almost get rear ended. It looked like he couldn't stop in time to get behind the rider in front of him in the bike lane so instead he whipped around a car on the left side just as the light was changing. The driver almost accelerated right into him.

Monday night ride was not too memorable... terrible headwind... my panniers worked like a parachute.
Other than this it was a comfortable 65 deg F.

great! well, a little hot coming home, but no biggie. rode over some glass before I saw it. waved to two commuters, they actually waved back. nearly got right hooked.

Awesome Commute
60 degrees and sunny this afternoon. Rode harder than usual and had my two best times. 35 min for the ride in and 42 for the ride back. Supposed to be sunny and cool for the rest of the week. Fall riding is awesome!

----
back to longer bike path commute today.
my chain is skipping badly all of a sudden and it even popped off the front chainring once.
I've ordered a new chain, chainring and cassette- should be here in a day or two. The only problem with putting lots of miles on the commuter is it eventually wears out.
Nice rides anyway. Made some good speed on the way home.

A cement truck driver decided he did not care that I had the right of way and turned left in front of me. Heavy braking but not a panic. I misjudged his speed, or lack there of, and ended up having to stop in a panic instead of being able to cross behind him. I locked the front brakes and got up on the front wheel. I didn't go over but I lost balance and had to drop the bike and step over the handlebars as the bike fell. Then I tripped over the bike when I stepped back away from the truck and fell.
Broken light $35, busted bell $10, ripped brand new jersey on maiden voyage $65, possibly a bent derailer hanger but it could just be knocked out of alignment $25-$50 depending on the amount of damage. Sure wished I had gotten the company name off the side of the truck since I'm out as much as $150. No injuries though except for a nickel sized road rash on my elbow. Three passing drivers stopped to make sure I was alright. None of them saw the name of the company on the truck either.
The jerk saw me too, he was looking right at me when he started turning and did the sorry wave when he saw me braking hard. I really don't think he realized I could not stop in 10 feet like a pedestrian. I doubt he saw the fall since I was probably in his blind spot at that time. I sure hope he caught my one-finger salute in his mirror though.
In retrospect, I should have planned to stop after he started turning. Cutting behind him was not safe since I could not see around him to make sure no one was following him through the intersection.
Otherwise a nice ride home even after that event. No commute this morning though. That was my last headlight.
I have one on order that should arrive today.

Commute in today was great because I was riding this...

Although I was more afraid of being hit and had to avoid any water that was on the road.
I don't plan to commute much on the Witcomb, but every once in a while it will be a nice treat.

Got seriously buzzed (<6") by a guy who HAD to be in front of me at the next light. No one's come that close before. Nice temps (~50*) so my legs felt tight after each hill, but not hurting.

Senior Member
Rained last night and then stopped at around 3a. I normally get up @ 4:30a and leave by 5a-ish; temp around 50F and wet roads; incredibly clear skies with lots of stars although there was the usual black cloud mass right on top of the lake; started sprinkling a little bit as I reached my work place.
I have been doing this for about two weeks and I feel a little tired. Not tired of commuting by bike; it feels as my body needs more rest. But I get up and get out there on the road; I just don't try to push myself. I knew I was slow on my anvil, but today got passed by another bike commuter who was riding a road bike; he just swished by me and quickly dissappeared in the distance.
Anyway, we exchanged hellos and it was great to see another rider out there in the dark.
Took a shower, had breakfast and now I feel great although a little tired (not at all sore). I'm sticking to my daily commute program, perhaps is just a matter of getting used to it. Normally when I get back in the afternoon I sleep about an hour right after dinner and then work out (weights) some. I do a split routine (chest-triceps/back-biceps/legs-shoulders) twice per week; have been going light lately as again I've been feeling without energy. Perhaps it's my body telling me it is overworked? Or should I just be patient and let the body adapt?
I'm trying to lose body fat and get rid of my stomach donut; once I hit a target weight (175 lbs; I'm 5' 9") I want to focus on building up some lean body mass; and everyday I do my bike commute.

Not bad at all this morning. Low 50Fs, sunny. Great tailwind. It's weird riding at 20MPH and there's no wind at all.
Yesterday I was coasting slowly over the bike path bridge, drinking some water, and I saw a roadie approaching from behind. After he passed, I put my water bottle back in the cage and chased him just to see what I could do on the Liquid. I was holding my own behind him at over 20MPH, but I wouldn't have been able to maintain it forever. Knobby tires, etc... I broke off and did some dirt trails.

First commute with my planet bike alias HID sealed unit. Very impressed. Probably overkill for what I use my bike for the majority of the time, but late night rides are going to be awesome with it.

No commute today, coming down with a cold and, well, riding in sub 40 degrees probably isn't the wisest of things sometimes

Nice commute but cooler than I like.
Needed arm warmers and a light vest most of the way. Unzipped the vest when I was ~1.5 miles from work.
Saw lots of other commuters. Some in cutoff shorts and t-shirts (they must have been cold
), some in shorts and a l/s shirt.
Some "new" commuter pulled up beside me to my left at a stop light. When the light changed I took of first - luckily. He was turning right. That would have been a real sight for all the cagers. Two cyclists colliding at the front of the line of cars.

Wonderful commute this morning -- a refreshing crispness in the air and moderate traffic. Got a blast of bus particulates that ended up leaving crunchy residue on my teeth
but even that couldn't bring down the incredible nature of this morning. Tied my record time into work and barely broke a sweat. I was off the bike for a week due to a business trip, and I was feeling it yesterday. Today I think I'm almost back to where I was. Life is good

I had hoped to sneak out of the house early for a few extra miles but my daughter woke early (she is her father's daughter) and we sat and ate breakfast and watched Maisy while her mother and brother slept. Finally got on the road at 7:20 so I only had time for a short detour. Still, very nice.

c'mon mille bourne!!!!! (that means 1000 miles in french...)
since i sold my car approx aug 4, i have gotten 414 miles.
talk about motivation!
