Nice ride in this morning. Kept pace with a fellow roadie who cranked it up once I caught him. I'm still riding in jeans so he must have thought I was a casual commuter or a courier with a mini-pump sticking out my backpack. SPD-SL pedals, PI warmers, high cadence, helmet and gears should have been a give aways .

Great ride this morning. 37 degrees in our nation's capital and clear blue skies and sun. Plus, the traffic has been great all week, not too many cars and stressed-out drivers, but just enough to keep it interesting. I wish it could be like this all the time.

Tricky ride for me this morning from Grantham to Stoke Rochford (Lincs, UK) - wind was against me most of the way and it was wet too.

Mind, if the wind hasn't changed direction, I will simply fly home!

Nice leisurely ride in this morning with temps in the mid 30's and dry. This is my fourth or fifth week in a row of "all ride" weeks (which wins me dinner tonight) and next week should be any easy one with another Monday off. Had a fun trip home yesterday trying to hang with another rider. I used to see this guy all the time but rarely do now since our hours are so different. I can keep up with him as long as I'm drafting but as soon as I take the lead he pushes even harder. This guy only knows one speed (full speed) he's out of the seat hammering every hill and going hard the rest of the time. I can out sprint him in short bursts here and there but he can keep going hard the whole time. While we were chatting I discovered that, although he's similar in size to me, he weighs about 50 pounds less-the difference in strength to weight is more evident with him than other riders. Even though he hands me my @$$ on a platter ever time we ride together, it's good training for me and a lot of fun. I exit the trail before he does and wait until he's out of sight to hang my head, catch my breath, and coast toward recovery.

That was a neat story.
Good ride to work this morning, hooked up the trailer and brought Smokey to work. Stopped by at the farmer's market and bought groceries, which were loaded in the trailer next to Smokey. Arrived work about an hour late but the boss is out of town, sweet! Planning on going on another ride on my lunch break at the beach.

:D I did fly as well. Back in 55 minutes.

After a month off (cold, sinus infection, new job) I'm back for the last commute this year. After a very long slow and tiring haul I realized I was half way to work. I did make it, however, the sun was out, the air brisk and life is good.

cheers

pinkrobe 12-29-06 02:52 PM

GWAR!!! 'Twas bloody cold this morning! There were even fewer people on the road today than yesterday. I think somebody might have tooted their horn at me when I was going through downtown, but I gignored them and they went away. :D

32F going in this morning. 33F coming home. From what I understand it got in the 50's today, but these long workdays keep sunshine a vague memory. Only got buzzed once today. I twas one of those slooooow passes trying to intimidate me, so I ignored it and went on. It's so much easier not to sweat the little stuff.

still on a break from work so my daily bike rides are errand runs or to visit friends etc.

Great ride today- I left a favorite hat at a friends, who lives about 6 miles away but I decided to piece together a bike path loop that turned it into a fantastic 25 mile ride on a snowy evening.

Tonight was the first night I've really needed the studded snows all winter. Linking up the MDC bike path that starts in Newton and then I cut over to Cambridge, a couple of miles on nice little side streets, then picked up the path into Arlington and found the little gate off the bike path to my friends street.

Nice to roll along the river and through the back yards on a nice wide empty MUP.

Came back into my little village, bought a 6 pack of beer and some fish and chips to go and came home.

A perfect night- and I got my hat.

Ride in was 27F, a little chilly for me. I got a lift home because the drunks are already on the roads. Guess I'll drive in tomorrow. I tend to drive on New Years and the 4th of July. The odds of getting hit seem to go up on those days.

Left work at 11:30 pm. Stiff wind from the south. It had rained earlier so the roads were damp. Odd that my headlight shines a dimmer spot an a wet road. Most of my ride home is southward: it was hard riding but it felt good. I figured that most of the drinking drivers would be waiting for the ball to fall, marking the new year, so I had no worries about traffic. Some kids smoking on a front porch yelled at me as I passed: "Rock and Roll, babe! Need some help?" and so forth. Arrived home just before midnight.

Happy New Year!

First morning back from holidays today.

I got a bike computer for Christmas- I now know my ride is 17.65 km long, and I averaged just under 25 km/h this morning.

Hey BeetleBaby:
You said you live in the most bike unfriendly city in the world? Try Fort Worth, Texas. I was riding my MTB the other day, and a driver in a pickup truck was trying to run me off the road. I don't know why.

ModoVincere 01-02-07 07:07 AM

Early commute this morning...lots to do at the office this week.
Got here only to find a bunch of new people using the facilities, I guess new years resolutions or some such non sense. I'm sure all will be back to normal in a week or two.
Other than that, only one buzz this morning. Some jacka$$ in a SUV passed by me so close I could have grabbed hold of his door handle, opened the door and jumped in. That would have shocked the a$$hole.:D

About 2C this morning when I rode into work. I was on vacation 2 days last week so the anxiety about how much work had built up woke me up early this morning. So I took a leisurely ride in this morning dressed in my work clothes. I kind of hoped that the sight of a guy in a shirt and tie riding down the road would encourage people to give me a little wider berth and maybe even make them slow down a little. It didn’t work, they still drove like they were smoking crack while mixing up a batch of meth.

vtjim 01-02-07 07:45 AM

First day back at work from vacation. Nice 20-30MPH tailwind. I hope it dies down before I have to ride home. Low 30Fs. I was a little bit warm, actually. That's the tailwind's fault.

We got some snow over the weekend but it's all gone now. The MUP is clear. I ordered a pair of studded 26" Nokian Hakkapeliitta W106 tires from the LBS. At the rate this winter is going, I won't ever need them.

pinkrobe 01-02-07 11:19 AM

No real trouble getting in today. Many people aren't back in the office until next week, so I've got a few days to get used to the heavier traffic load before it becomes an onslaught.

I had a memorable ride in today--as I was approaching Constitution Avenue, the motorcade for Ford's funeral was beginning to make its way to the Capitol to pick up the casket. As I was stopped watching the procession, I caught a glimpse of Betty Ford and her family.

The ride in was quiet. With the Federal government shut down today, there was little traffic on the roads and bike trails. Only three cars passed me!

HardyWeinberg 01-02-07 11:28 AM

No work today, so commuted w/ Thing 1 to his K. Only bikes at the rack this morning. Sun was not yet up, of course, there was still another 45 min for other kids to roll in.

gizem310 01-02-07 11:39 AM

Nice ride. Brisk cool air, a nice surprise for SoCal. It was so nice actually that half way to the office, I turned around and went back home with the excuse that I left my cell phone at home. I arrived home, just to realize that it was in my pannier! :)
Eating my bowl of oatmeal and drinking a cup of coffee, enjoying the fact that I'm turning in my two-weeks notice in three days... IT ROCKS!!!

caloso 01-02-07 11:44 AM

First commute of 2007 was a little late starting but smooth once I got on the road. I did get buzzed by a blue Lexus, but I don't think it was intentional, just clueless. If I'd been a bit more assertive taking the lane, I doubt she'd have tried to scoot by me.

I rode the old mtb with full panniers, wearing a shirt and tie and my brand new fluorescent green jacket. I probably looked like the Freddiest of Freds. And I don't really care.

idcruiserman 01-02-07 02:30 PM

Easy ride in today after 12 days off, thankfully. Hardly any traffic, too.

Ray C 01-02-07 02:41 PM

Temp. start 26°, end 30°. Wind: calm. Dist: 20 mi., Time: ~1hr 25min. (I need a cycle computer, any suggestions?).

Used clear fit-over safety glasses for the first time, to reduce eye irritation. Worked well, but a little bulky. Would like to find smaller pair that still clear my glasses.

Saw a red fox cross in front of me. It's always fun to see the wildlife. The other day I saw a Cooper's hawk. Their not as common as the Red Tailed around here (Kansas City, MO, USA).

Felt good to ride after over-eating on New Year's Day. :)
