Had to work a few hours today. Rode the Caldaro in and parked it next to my boss' office. We're pretty casual on the weekends.

I have no idea why, but my cycling computer said I went 19 miles on the way home but only 13.3 on the way there...

jwbnyc 07-01-07 06:55 PM

The Time:

11:00AM

The Place:

Just South of Dyckmann/200th, headed towards the Speedway, on the Eastside MUP.

Happened to glance over at the Harlem River Drive only to see a Bicyclist northbound *on* the HWY.

He had to have been on there from at least 155th.

Death wish?

You decide.

Bought yourself a cheap wireless computer didja? :D

Matt1972 07-02-07 03:50 AM

I bought a Planet Bike Aero wireless computer and I was all set and ready to roll when I realized it wasn't measuring the mileage. I took it off the bracket, and something was rattling inside. The route I'm taking to work is 6.5 miles each way. I'm going to ride accessoryless for awhile, I've decided (with a helmet, of course)

Beautiful ride in today! Low temps and really low humidity. I was on holiday for 2 weeks, then sick for a week with a nasty cold I caught on the return flight home, so this is my first commute since June 7. It is way too nice to not ride today-Nearly unheard of in NC to have such cool, dry weather in early July so I had to ride. Looking forward to the ride home, which should include a tailwind too.

I hate it when this happens . .. great ride . . . hot shower at work . . . forgot to pack the effing work clothes so I'll be hearing about my skintights all day now

I would have to agree there, relatively "cool" this morning which was very nice. I met up with another commuter who was traveling the same way I was for a few miles. We met up at a few traffic lights, exchanged good mornings and were on our way. Should be a nice commute home as Big Ron stated.

Another NC report of a beautiful ride this morning. I had to take the road bike (old school Cannondale Criterium 3.0 with down tube shifters) instead of the commuter (Specialized Hard Rock). Wow. The speed difference was incredible.

Apparently I wasn't the only one who noticed the speed difference. I was nearly left-hooked by a driver pulling into my own building this morning. I "ran her down" in the parking lot and asked her why she cut me off. She said, "I thought I had plenty of time, but you were moving so fast! I'm really sorry." I gave her the usual line about bikes moving faster than drivers realize and rode off to my entrance.

I made my first comute with my new PB 5.0 Cyclocomputer...(Thanks Mom!) That thing is soo cool!!!!

just under 5.5 miles at around 25minuets.... I didnt re-zero it when I left this morning, so I think I still had some time and mileage on it from mucking around yesterday after I got it hooked up :D

My 5yo son saw it and was "Dad! I NEED ONE!" When I pointed out that he still has his training wheels on, and couldnt get one till he was up on 2 wheels, he was "Aw... I'm gonna go practice!"... Ata boy

I also mounted a BlackBurn Expidition rack to my bike yesterday (Thanks again MOM!)... Tried to strap my back pack to it... thing is too narrow... I need a Milk Crate... I stopped by the cafateria at school, and they said I could have one tommorow! Cool!

Nice ride in this morning. Weather was cool [somewhat] and humid. Drivers must have been mad about having to go to work. I think I got buzzed 3 or 4 times today. Silly Motorists... you can't scare me like that. I'm used to it.

KingTermite 07-02-07 09:04 AM

GREAT RIDE in today!!! I just felt alive and was burning up the asphalt!! :) I wish I had the time I could have taken a nice ride instead of going to work. ;)

I thought that was just me. When drivers buzz me, pass aggressively, whatever, I think to myself, "I don't initimidate that easily." Of course, I say this silently to myself, as I don't want them to up the ante, as it were ;)

2 incidents today on the way in.

First a red-faced fatty slows down and beeps angrily at me while gesturing vigorously at the cyle lane, which is impossible to ride on on a road bike because the surface is absolutely godawful. He got a cheery one-fingered salute, as the law has just been re-worded in the UK explicity stating that you don't have to use a cycle lane if one is available.

Then, just after pulling out of a T-junction, the car hurtling up behind me, who'd been a good 100m back when I pulled out, suddenly slams on her brakes and skids about 20m behind me (wet road, cretin at wheel) and also gives me an angry blast. She was quite pretty though so I blew her a kiss. Although she really deserved a sharp stick to the guts.

Apart from that, spent much of the 12 miles obsessively trying to make the avg/mph number on my new computer get higher... :D - averaged a mere 15.5 mph, need taller gearing!

Sun is currently shining, looking forward to the ride home in about 15 minutes...

caloso 07-02-07 10:32 AM

Once again, I find myself with an embarrassment of riches: two bikes at work. Friday afternoon I met my wife for an after-work event and drove home with her. I kept thinking that over the weekend I'd retrieve it, but that never happened.

Good ride in today. Trailered both kids to their respective destinations, took direct, nasty-ish route from Thing 2's daycare, detoured to bank machine. No achilles tendon complaints from winding loaded ride, so that was a major plus. But doesn't really surprise me after 2 days off, we'll see what tomorrow pm feels like.

livewirerc 07-02-07 12:18 PM

Nice ride in this morning. Took a break from the fixies and rode my 29er in to work with its brand new 2.3" Exiwolf tires. Those things are HUGE and make the bike look super intimidating. Didn't have a single car mess with me, though when they do the nasty look and hand on the U-Lock tends to make them back off. It was a slower ride in which I attribute to the headwind and bigger tires, but it was fun. After work I'm going down to the greenbelt and doing some off-roading, hence the big bike and big tires. :)

Not a bad day in: great weather in the morning despite a couple strange driving incidents (a work van zooming past a little closer than necessary and a jeep pulling a skidding right turn from the left lane, cutting off another car (not in my direction, thankyouverymuch)). On the way home I got 'caught' by guy who asked directions to Forest Park (he was running all the lights, so he was 'faster'). I guess he didn't catch it all, because I saw him later asking another cyclist for directions. Also talked to some people while at the grocery store bike rack. Hopefully convinced one to start commuting via bike (he gets paid extra for it, so I don't see why not!).

No ride in today since it was a holiday. Instead I bought new ergon grips and installed them on the bike, Also took some video of my boys the older one was playing with his wood bike. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl4n6HlQ5tA

devildogmech 07-02-07 10:31 PM

My ride home: 5.6 mi Avg spd... 15.5mph... I love this computer! I was hitting 21 mph in the flats when I was having to push to get out of trafic.... Booyah!

Not too shabby for a fat kid on an old mtn bike :D

this was my first real ride w/ my new San Jose. Its about 15 mi one way. I can mos def feel the difference in the tires, I may get some road tires for this bike...its a little slower than my old road bike.

or it could be because I have not road a bike in 2 weeks (bike accident) and also went on vacation. So I may be a little out of shape

Big Ron 07-03-07 05:14 AM

Another atypically fine weather day here in the RTP area. The humidity feels like its a bit higher than yesterday, but still much lower than the typical 70F dew point (I'm guessing the DP was in the upper 50's this AM). I'm toying with the idea of riding a metric century tomorrow. My arthritic left knee has been bothering me some, and I don't want to aggravate it any more than necessary. I've done the "Firecracker 100" 10 years in a row now and this year will definitely be the coolest weather I've ever seen for it. Hard to pass that up.

zpl 07-03-07 05:52 AM

Woke up 20 minutes late, and had to skip my pre-ride shower. Went out the door on schedule and found it was a *chilly* morning in southern NH, upper 40s F. Fortuntely, I warmed up after 5 minutes or so and all was good.

This being my third time commuting to work by bike, I'm continuing to pare down what I need to bring in with me on the bike. This is the first time I managed to keep everything I needed in my seat bag without requiring additional cargo space. Clothes and snacks are stowed at work.

Today will be a good day.

I have my mtn bike set up for commuting, but today I took the road bike & used a backpack. I really enjoyed riding the road bike more, but I didn't care for the backpack. I'll have to get my Blackburn rack moved over the road bike so I can use my panniers. I had a couple of misfires (didn't start the computer at the start of the ride, my mirror came off mid-ride), but I still enjoyed the ride a lot.
