Slow and steady won the race this morning. Cooler here than for most of you - a humid, overcast 70* at 7am. Light right after 7 miles, but only for a few minutes.

Supposed to be bright, sunny, cooler, and less humid all week here in New England. Might try my first five-day week commute.

I was passed by a vehicle spewing so much smoke from its tailpipe that I thought I was in the old Spy Hunter arcade game I used to play where you could let loose a smoke screen to help get away from the baddies. It was terrible. My lungs were screaming "No carcinogens please!!!".

I loved that game!

Nothing remarkable about today's ride in. It remains unseasonably cool (sorry Midwest...) and calm. Would have been a nice morning for a long ride, but I slept in. I did a 37 mile ride with my father-in-law yesterday out to Granite Bay for a family birthday party. I thought he'd done that ride before but after we arrived he said that it was the longest ride he'd ever done!

Fargin' cold today! I wore the heavy jacket, and it was actually too heavy. I was sweating something fierce by the time I got to work, and my legs were tired. I'm not entirely sure that was a coincidence.

Effortless! Bought a used cyclocross bike in like new condition this weekend as an upgrade from my 15 yr old mnt bike. The new bike flies!

Hottest commute this year. It got DOWN to 86 last night. Was still 90 at midnight. Humidity is 100 percent until sun gets way up around 10AM when it gets burned off a little. Low humidity at 90 percent. It's a tough commute from 8:30 to 9:30 when I went in today. Took the shaded back streets and lower speeds of 12 to 15 mph over potholes and a zillion stop signs last 7 miles. First 10 miles totally exposed to the sun on levee top path, but cracked out average of 20 mph to get it over with...yuck.

My wife was in the neighborhood of my workplace today and, God bless her, rescued me from the ride home in her Camry with awesome AC. She even drove! We are a one-car household, so we can afford one really nice, dependable car.

I am pleased to announce that there were no bunnies harmed in my commute this morning. :)

Awesome ride home last night. Worked until 6 which is later than usual, but this meant that somehow I missed all the traffic. I think I made every light and almost every crossing was clear while taking the mup. Made it home in 22 minutes so I must have averaged something fierce since it usually takes between 32 and 36 minutes.

If someone wants to do the math - 11kms 22 minutes - I better start working now :)

This AM was pretty crappy...I think I have developed an ear infection, and that just plain sucks. I had to do a physical exam (periodic) this morning, so I didn't get any other PT in after the ride. For the best, as the side of my head was throbbing. I have been taking some side roads, trying to find alternate routes around town. Of course, I am doing this on the way home...coming in late because of sightseeing is not encouraged!

But yesterday, I went around a huge shopping center, then industrial park. The cool thing about Germany is there are bike paths about EVERYWHERE. The bad thing...when there are no paths, you are on the road with folks that are LESS than accomadating, by any standard. I guess that's why most locals just 'take the lane' if they can't find a path.

I'm thinking tonite I will just cut thru the 'messplatz'...which is a cool garden and park. Maybe I'll take a pic or 2 for you guys. They do have a little restaurant that serves bier (beer in German), I'll have to check that out before a weekend or something.

Very nice ride in - humidity is down and the 52F was quite invigorating.

Was out riding last night from 9 pm -1:30 am last "night" - and that was sweet - love night riding - originally went out to hopefully catch a glimpse of the meteor shower - as I traveled to the highest hill in the city in order to get away from city light glare - but I didn't see any - so I kept on riding.

Another fast one. 60F and a bit of a tailwind. Very pleasant. Only saw 2 riders going the other way. Toward the end of my ride, some guy came bombing down a hill on a bike, blew a stop sign behind me and tried to use his momentum to catch me. I pulled away once he lost said momentum. :p

Last night I was riding home just before dark, and I was reeling in another rider. After I caught up, I saw it was a woman on a road bike, with toe clips, in a sun dress, riding along around 16 or 17MPH. Not bad. :D

pinkrobe 08-14-07 08:26 AM

Kinda chilly today. I'm feeling like an old man, with all sorts of creaks and groans. I'm sure a new bike will cure all my ills...

Nice and cool this morning after waiting for the rain to stop. Finally got to try out the fenders, and they work as advertised.

HardyWeinberg 08-14-07 09:11 AM

2 miles shorter and 2 mph faster on the most direct route, today, than the most serene route, yesterday. I totally spaced this morning, avoiding tree-trimming crews on my block, and wound up on the completely wrong heading (I had intended for more serenity today).

ningnangnong 08-14-07 09:13 AM

Very, very, very wet. Altura trousers held out but not the North Face jacket.

Time for a new one I think.

Another weird commute yesterday. The morning ride was fine (temps finally dropped over the weekend), but loud, as drivers were honking horns like crazy--not even at me, just in general.

Then around 10:30 yesterday morning my daughter's day care center called me. They had a stray dog hanging around the front of the building; they'd called animal control but AC couldn't come for a while. One of the ladies remembered I volunteer with dog rescue, so they asked me if I could come get him. I wasn't expecting what I found when I got there. I've seen many really skinny stray dogs over the years, but this guy was my worst so far. :(

We caught him and I called one of our foster homes. Long story short, I wound up driving all over Raleigh and Durham getting the dog squared away, and in the end had my car here at work. I didn't ride home yesterday, instead loaded the bike into the car and drove, wearing my bike shorts, shoes, and jersey.

MyPC8MyBrain 08-14-07 11:11 AM

Great ride home last night... pounded it all the way. Even stood up and hammered on the last half mile up the hills. I don't know what gets into me. I start off from work thinking I'm just going to cruise...next thing ya know I'm flying.

Had one putz pull way to the right to try and block my forward progress past him while he was stuck in traffic. He didn't catch me again until I was a mile and a half up the hill. What are these yahooz thinking ? Freakin looser.

This morning I left earlier... about 6:30. Man what a huge increase in traffic. School is started again so I think that has a lot to do with it. Passed 100 cars in pre coffee 3 lane gridlock coming down from the house.
Weeeeeeeee..
Hahaha

caloso 08-14-07 11:29 AM

No more creaking from the Trek 5200 when standing on the pedals. The shop replaced my BB, retensioned my spokes, and adjusted my headset. Now it's just deadly silent. Beautiful.

I took a route I don't normally take today, and it was backed up for miles because of construction. I got to do a lot of fun lane-splitting. :)

Felt fast and strong.

I like to let out a loud devilish laugh at times like that! Suckers rotting in traffic. Gotta love it.

Hot!

This morning I got buzzed by an SUV. I had taken the middle of the lane, gave a left turn signal and the SUV gunned it and passed me on my left just as I was turning. grr... Other than that, it was cooler today, around 78 this morning, so it made for a nice ride to work. I stopped by the LBS on the way home to pick up a part for my mountain bike and then took the long way home, just to get a few extra miles in. Overall, it was a good day of riding.

 Maybe it was one of the people who post to Burlington Vermont's Craigslist/RNR. (Look for posts about cyclists) I swear, the people who post there have the average intellect of a 12 year-old. I read it because it's like watching a train wreck. I don't respond.

Anywho, fast ride again today, even with a soul-sucking headwind: 17MPH at the airport, 32MPH on the lake, which I ride next to almost all the way in. :( Temps around 60F. Hardly saw anybody. Passed a young lady, and noticed a rider who seemed to be reeling me in (or trying to at any rate) but he never caught up.

I talked to a cyclist at a red light about the headwind. He agreed that the wind would probably turn around and be in our faces for the ride home too. :p

First time using my generator light set. Its a real cheap set I picked up for like $12 at Target. It worked fine. The light gets pretty dim when I'm going up this one hill, but the suns coming up by that time and I can see just fine. I imagine later on I'll either use the Cateye to supplement the generator light on the hill or I'll just have to get stronger so I can go uphill faster. Either way, it works.

Low 60's and low humidity - nice ride - and found yet another way to cut another block off of riding Main St - by cutting through a huge parking lot to a little one way street, jump a couple cubs and VOILA! One less city block of cars fighting to get on/off the expressway.

Oh wow - I envy you! It was so sticky here this morning that it felt like somebody poured syrup on the backs of my knees and every time I stopped, my glasses fogged up.
