Like many of you (I assume), I'm required by my wife to call in as soon as I arrive at work so she doesn't worry.
Another massive storm blew over just before I left yesterday too. We've been getting a lot of these storms recently. I don't mind riding through them (it's not as if it's cold), but the amount of debris they wash into the roads (stones, twigs, litter etc) can be a bit of a pain. |

Looks like early next week the snow will be gone and the weather will be warm, so I will be back in the saddle again :D. |
Ditto on the "arrived safely" wife report. Text messages are the way to go for me.
-Rode for the first time this week - early in the week it was very windy (I know, I'm a wuss). Nice ride today, bought a new wireless bike computer last week, today was the first time I used it. I don't know if it was the cold or what, but the first half of my ride the computer registered my speed at twice the actual speed. So I averaged 32 mph on the way in this morning! Thank you to all of you who live in cold climates, your posts are an inspiration to me when it's a mere 34F here in Southern VA. |
overcast and chilly turned into snow on the way home. Stopped to do some shopping. Had a pretty full blown snow squall as I left the supermarket near my home with a big bag of groceries in my milkcrate. A woman got one look at me as I was pulling away and I thought she was going to call me crazy and she said, "Good for you!"

Spent an hour to go 10 miles at 6am after a 12 hour shift. Not to shabby, for me! Alot of frozen rain with an irritating dusting of snow to make it slippery. In fact I lost my footing at a stop light and almost went over becasue my foot came out from under me. But it felt okay to ride on, carefully. Might be time to lose the Contact 2000s' on the MTB and sport for some studs. This is my first winter commuting and so far its been fun! Thank goodness I rode MC's thru more than a few Colorado winters. I have the keep warm thing down, just need to work on Ice confidence on a bicycle...

not a bad commute home this morning. i overdressed and got a little hot, but didn't want to take the time to stop and lose a layer of clothing so i just dealt with it. i was feeling a little fatigued for some reason, but i still managed to enjoy a run of about 23 mph on flat for a half mile or so. all the drivers were courteous. damp and a little foggy tonight so i'll be donning the rainsuit.
|
The commute was really nice today as it is starting to warm up and the bike highway and roads are clear enough that I can ride my cross bike / commuter.
It is one of those incredible Alberta winter days where the snow is contrasted nicely by the bluest of skies and also nice was the fact that I get to ride in the daylight on the weekends whereas my weekday commute is dark both ways. |
a little on the misty and foggy side to and from work but not problems. i love sunday morning rides. i saw maybe 15 cars in 3.5 miles. the ride was a really good way to come down off of a hectic, tragedy filled shift.

The ride in last night and the ride home this morning were uneventful. We got a bunch of freezing rain and it's pretty icy out there now. I don't have to work tonight but I'm thinking about riding up to the store.
|
Uneventful. Not quite so hot, but with the recent rain the humidity is still high, so it makes for a sweaty ride. Weather like this I really want to lose the helmet; my head gets very hot.
I did put new brake pads on my bike at the weekend though - my stopping power was definitely improved! |
Rain, fog and 43F here in DC/Northern VA area; otherwise uneventful. I found the rain to be somewhat invigorating, but the fog put me up on the sidewalk in a couple of places that I normally ride on the road.

Now that I'm used to riding in the cold and have accumulated all the winter gear I need, we get a warm spell. We're supposed to have record high temps over the next few days, with highs in the mid to upper 70s. I shouldn't complain, but I was actually enjoying riding in the cold. Now I have to reprogram my brain (and body) for riding in different temps. Got out the arm and leg warmers for the ride into work this morning, so I could wear shorts and short-sleeve jersey for the ride home. It was still kind of chilly riding to work this morning despite the high 50 temps due to fog and very high humidity. We don't get much fog here and this was one of my first experiences riding in it. The worst part was my eyeglasses fogging up. The fog was intermittent, so it would lift for a while and my glasses would clear, and then I'd hit another patch that would fog them up again. Also had to be very careful about slick spots on the road due to moisture on manholes, road paint, etc. This crazy weather is supposed to last all week.

20F and snowing. Maybe half-an-inch of fluffy powder on the ground. I did my MUP/road combination commute. The roads were plowed so it was easy going. The MUP parts were their usual level of roughness.
This is smug, I know, but I was giggling at people outside scraping their car windows. I've also noticed a lot more of those stupid remote car starter things. Vehicles sitting there idling for who-knows how long. They always seem to be SUVs, too. My co-worker arrived about 40 minutes later than normal, looked at my bike sitting here on rubber mats (to collect melting snow), and said, "I guess you didn't have the same traffic problems as everyone else." :D :p |
Very wet, temperature about 65 F. They are improving the road between our office and our home - in the past it was river rock pounded in by traffic - now they have hauled in some smaller stuff used a roller after grading. All of this is preparing for pavement. It is so much easier to ride now!
|
good to be back on the bike! Nothing like some sand, gravel and snow to welcome a new drivetrain. I'm sending out some actual kudos today as the motorists more than respected my right to be out on our snowy roads today.
|
Surprise snowfall this morning, so took it slow for a fun ride in.
|
The fresh snow made this nice fffwwwww noise on the way in. Very nice! :D
|
35F and misty. My fingertips were cold but everything else was fine after 10 minutes of riding. I finally found some battery-powered LED Xmas lights at Walgreens and I attached a string to my back pack--I hope that looks jaunty and festive as well as safe.
|
35F also, foggy but sunbreaks. Forgot my food and underwear, grrr
|
rode the snow cruiser into work today. Balloon tires, radio strapped to the handlebars, super comfy seat. I was slow-rollin so I stayed on the sidewalks most of the time, and I was getting really funny looks from people waiting at the bus stops when I rolled by rocking tunes and dancing along with the pedals.
|
My ride to the store last night was great. there was a coating of ice on everything and I barely stayed on my feet walking to the garage. Got on the bike and felt much safer. Those Innova studded tired did their job fairly well. if I put too much force on the pedals in too high of a gear I could get the rear tire to spin a bit but the only other time I slid in a 3 mile ride was taking one corner a little fast and I caught a crack in the pavement.
|
Scary when you're safer riding your bike than you are walking. :p (Been there and done that, too!)

It snowed for a bit yesterday meaning there was a bit more wet on the road, but otherwise the same as later last week - warmer today.
Good ride in though. |
