37F/3C with a brisk north wind that made it feel a bit chillier. But I remembered to wear both my gloves and liners today. Actually had to shield my eyes going east... what the heck is that bright thing in the sky? Oh, yeah, the sun.

Probably a mixture of the chain needing oil (ran out over a week ago) and tires being underinflated. Pretty soon it'll be light out for the morning commute.

I must confess that I know very little about Iceland, but I always imagined that it was much colder there in the winter. Is -5C warm for this time of year?

Tired also, had a weekend of riding around on my temporary fixed conversion, nice easy gear (42/17) enough to be able to not use the brake much, but took a lot more out of me than I'd have thought. Had lots of snow related fun anyway :)

Riding on my roadie this morning felt very weird, coasting, etc. :)

ItsJustMe 02-04-08 12:31 PM

My son broke his ankle, so I'm dropping him at school in the car now. No riding for me for at least 2 or 3 weeks. This will be the longest I'll have been off the bike at once since going essentially full time in 2005.

Yes, normally he rides the bus, and it's still not out of the question, but his route to school involves transferring busses, and the transfer point is mayhem of 500+ students swapping around between a couple dozen busses in a parking lot, all carrying backpacks, and crutches on ice isn't great either.

SNOW!!! I haven't been able to ride since the 9th of December. I cannot believe the amount of snow we've received. Good for water, bad for my weight. :)

scoatw 02-04-08 04:23 PM

Ride home this aftn felt alot cooler than the 49f indicated. But it still felt nice not having to wear all of the cold weather gear. No balaclava, no shoe covers, just a single layer. Got me thinking about Springtime. Whoa! Hold on there, we still have February to go thru. Expecting thunderstorms tom'rw. I wonder what that will be like. Come on March. Ride this morning was real nice. 37f, no wind, made good time riding in.......Tomrrow my ride in will be thoughts of Sheldon and his family.

got home at about 3:30AM after driving on the highway for 6 hours... then got up at 7 for work. riding a bike is hard on 3 hours of sleep. Ironically it's the only thing that wakes me up in the morning, way better than coffee.

logdrum 02-04-08 11:17 PM

Snow in the evening! A little scary because the wind was blasting as well! Morning was just flurries but came down hard in the PM. I think it will melt though! It's the desert and the Southwest --- what do you expect!

zephyr 02-04-08 11:19 PM

Today's 27 mi bike commute is in memory of Sheldon Brown. This is what he would want us to do, a guy who knew all along that bicycles are not all about the speed or the bling. Rest in peace my friend.

Iceland is warmer than you'd imagine. It's an island so it's moderated by the ocean, which is further warmed by the Gulf Stream. For January and February we get anywhere between -15C to 5C or so. Certainly not cold enough to impress our Canadian friends or even the Norwegians. Even Massachusetts easily gets colder. I've lived in Boston, Edmonton (Canada) and Trondheim (Norway) among other places and all had colder winters than Iceland. We do however get more wind than these places and our summers aren't nearly as nice. Here's more information if you want.
Oh, today's commute. I oiled the chain and inflated the tires (too much). Bike certainly felt lighter but the ride was harsh, grip was severely compromised and where the snow wasn't really well packed, the tires cut through where they would float on top yesterday. Probably the sweet spot is somewhere between the pressure I had yesterday and the one I had today. I'll let some air out before I go home and see how it works.

Not super fast or strong this morning, but the balmy temps and thick fog made the ride a lot of fun. The G.F. is going to pick me up early today for a doctor's appointment so my ride will spend the night in the office.

tarwheel 02-05-08 06:54 AM

Nice commute this morning except for the headwind most of the way. It was the warmest morning in quite some time, low about 50F, so I dressed much lighter. Still overdressed and was pretty sweaty by the time I got to work. I rode one of my better road bikes (Merckx Corsa) since I won't have a bunch of layers to peel off in the afternoon. It was fun, and my average speed was about 1 mph faster than usual, even with the wind. I didn't have room to carry a lunch so will have to go out to eat later or drink a shake in my office.

Trying to decide whether to ride tomorrow as a front is expected to move through, with showers and possible thunderstorms. If it's raining in the morning, I'll definitely drive, but I might try my luck otherwise. We have been in a very bad, persistent drought, and most of the time when they predict rain lately it either never materializes or we get just a few little sprinkles.

Itsjustb 02-05-08 08:26 AM

Uneventful ride this morning, same conditions as tarwheel reported. There was a little fog towards the end of my ride, but it has really rolled in since I arrived at work--I can barely see out my window.

My wife commutes by car (she brings our daughter to day care). This morning she reported something that, sadly, is much too common for us cyclists. She was slowing to make a left into day care with her left turn signal on when the driver behind her accelerated and passed her on the left in the oncoming lane. If she had started her turn a half-second earlier she'd have another car in the driver's side of her car. Fewking idiots.

Intheloonybin 02-05-08 08:39 AM

It snowed yesterday, so it was snowy/slushy last night and this morning.

Have to second the "idiots" thought. Had people passing closer than normal and one guy hauled --- to pass me on a narrow parkway road.

Felt great this morning though. Was haulin tail myself- even in the snow.

Glad to hear your wife didn't crash! Maybe it's a full moon or something?

pinkrobe 02-05-08 09:13 AM

Much warmer today! A balmy -11C with no wind to speak of.

DataJunkie 02-05-08 09:43 AM

15F with 4 inches of snow. Plus, it was lightly snowing on the way in! My goodness that was fun. :)
I missed the train I intended to take and rode around for a few extra miles while I waited for the next one.
Met another rider on the train and chatted for quite a while. Both of us where having a blast in the snow.
This is what riding is all about...fun.

Good God. It's dumb enough to do that with cyclists, but at least a lot of people aren't used to cyclists and don't know how to react to them. But how incomprehensibly moronic do you have to be to do that to another car?! Apparently, still smart enough to get a DL...

Isn't that an oxymoron? :p

Cool, calm and beautiful blue skies. Such a nice day that I switched out my heavy commute wheels for my Ksryiums. !Estaba volando!

Flimflam 02-05-08 12:30 PM

Training night tonight, so I rode the fixie in - running 42:17 (66GI) so it's pretty comfortable riding around town. I'm running platforms on it right now, helps in the snow but still scares the nards out of me at times.

Heard on the radio that King was closed right in between where my office is, so I altered my route only to find the blockage was on the street I had detoured via to cut right onto King, not a big deal I circled back and used the sidewalk to get to my office.

Warmer weather makes me happier too, it's said to get all the way up to 6C.

spokenword 02-05-08 01:33 PM

Commute yesterday was quiet and easy on the way to work. temperatures were moderate and I thought that I maybe overdressed with my lobster claws as my hands were pretty sweaty and overheated when I got to work.

came in handy on the way home though, as I left at 7:30pm and the temperature had plummeted by then. Rode 20 miles to a bar/nightclub to meet up with some friends, danced until 1AM, rode 6 miles to home then got up at 8 this morning.

Commute today was definitely in 100% recovery mode. Three pints of Guinness have a way of catching up with a person in the morning.

jakbikesdc 02-05-08 03:26 PM

Sunny and 75F today!!!! Slightly humid, but hey it's Florida.
Cardinals, Bluebirds, and Mockingbirds were spotted over and over. The Buds on trees are starting to come out again.

It's spring in February!

neilfein 02-05-08 04:36 PM

I stopped to vote in the primary on the way home. One of the poll workers commended me for cycling in visible clothing, and another asked where to get a blinky like the one on my helmet; she jotted down the brand and model to buy one for her husband.

DogBoy 02-05-08 04:53 PM

Well...I'm off for home. Weather is warm (upper 20's to low 30's), windy and snowing and its starting to get dark. Should be fun :)

trombone 02-05-08 05:49 PM

No rain today! Hurrah! It's been very wet lately.

Ride in was OK; rode my new SS which was fun. I think I'm getting a cold though, so don't feel 100%.

The relentless rain seems to have done in the electrics on my other bike though. The rear light filled up with water and stopped working a couple of days ago, despite it being wrapped in plastic. Then the front light gave out. And now the cyclocomputer is playing up. Hmmm. Don't they design these things for wet weather?
