my 1.7er this morning was nice. crisp and cool. going to be a nice sunny day in the mid 40s.

First commute to work this morning after a few months off. It always feels so good to get a ride in before work.

A good morning for riding, temps in the high 30s, not much wind :D Now if only work would go by quickly so I can get back on the bike....

Itsjustb 03-11-08 06:49 AM

Conflicted commute this morning. On the one hand I made great time--I think I averaged ~20 mph for the ride; it certainly felt like I was flying today. On the other hand I had two confrontations with drivers.

The first was a lady who wouldn't let me cross the lane to get in the left-turn lane. Of course all this gained her was she got to the red light about a second before me. :(

The second was with a lady who passed me on the campus road. The speed limit on the road is 20 mph; I was doing 25 on a downhill with a sharp curve when she passed me doing about 30 or 35. She barely kept her car on the road--she was completely in the other lane, I heard the tires squealing, and she barely missed the curb on the outside of the other lane. And once again it didn't gain her much. She arrived at the parking deck about 3 seconds before me.

I wavered on whether to bike commute today because I have some errands to run downtown. Need some new eyeglasses -- fast -- and my optician is located another 8-10 miles past my office. That would make my commute about 40 miles for the day, and probably means I would need to take the afternoon off. However, it's supposed to be a beautiful sunny, warm day with a high in the mid-60sF.

So ... I decided to ride. Should be a fun afternoon. I'll leave work around noon, ride downtown, eat lunch, pick out some new glass frames, and then ride 20 miles or so home. The perfect solution to spring fever.

"Why is he staring at me like that?" is probably what went through the mind of the clueless taxi passenger that opened her door in front of me. I stopped in time, but glared at her in the way I usually reserve for looking at incredibly stupid things.

Also saw a motorcycle rider forced out of his lane by a livery cab that just decided to change lanes w/o looking or signaling. The rider let loose the bird, and zoomed off. Be careful out there.

And how. My ride home yesterday was textbook: taking the lane when necessary, taking up my position at a couple of significant intersections, the whole nine yards. But coming into my condo development, one of my neighbors gets right up on my rear tire while blaring her horn. Bear in mind that I'm doing the speed limit on a twisty entrance road going by an elementary school entrance and bus stop used by Metro, the U of MD shuttle and the County School system buses at about 3:30 in the afternoon. After essentially threatening my life with her automobile, this genius then shouts out, "Stay off the road--you ain't no car!"

It's a bit troubling to think that I could get snuffed out by such mindless stupidity (she probably had to go to the bathroom). Then again, it's a reminder that it could happen at any time.

Left late this morning, and didn't make good time. But good conditions otherwise.
Upper 30s when I left - I took off the skullcap halfway through to finish my ride in a short-sleeved shirt, light windbreaker, slacks, light leather gloves, and light earmuffs.

parabellum 03-11-08 08:57 AM

About 25F this am, 10mph of wind.

I did the 5 mile commute in about 20min or so in a wind breaker and a light base layer. Only my ears were cold, but that was just until the blood got going.

My co workers are all typical Americans....they would drive their car one block to the corner store before ever considering walking or cycling....lol....you should see the looks I get when I walk my bike past their offices...lol...

People like that piss me off, but at the same time, I love laughing at them. I was yelled at (as a pedestrian carrying 3 bags of groceries trying to cross a busy street at night) by a person in a pick up truck who I apparently interrupted while they tried to make a fast right turn. But I never could figure out anything witty to yell back at them.

As for my commute today, I guess it was windy and though the trip up the road isn't steep, it's still up an incline. I feel out of shape, lol. :D

caloso 03-11-08 10:05 AM

Mid 40s, patchy clouds, calm. The bike path seems to be more crowded this week. I think a lot of seasonal commuters have waited for the change to DST.

SDBluefish 03-11-08 11:22 AM

I swear drivers are always extra psycho for the first few days after the time change. It's a time when I am always really careful.

Skipped the ride yesterday after an awful weekend spent on a business trip to Akron. Got there just ahead of the blizzard, then had to cancel the meeting because hey! there's a blizzard! Then my flight home was cancelled too - took me a good 18 hours to make it back and I was completely fried by the end of it.

But today was beautiful. So nice to be back outside in the air - and not a snowflake in sight!

Business810 03-11-08 12:45 PM

It was a bit cooler than I expected this morning (low 30's), and I mistakenly wore my lighter gloves. My fingers were a bit numb by the time I got in, but overall, it wasn't too bad. For some reason, traffic seemed a lot heavier than usual, though.

I did run into a fellow bike commuter in the elevator of my office building, though - which is a rare occurrence since I work in a pretty small building.

Buglady 03-11-08 01:28 PM

For once I'm glad I took the bus - I got off at the college and was promptly blown sideways by the 45kph+ wind that had come up. That would have been one nasty headwind for me, and I had a midterm this morning...

rando 03-11-08 01:38 PM

Commute was great, temps were perfect, slight wind. I did near-record time today. made a few lights I don't normally make. I think I need a new seat though, this B-68 is killing me.

striegel 03-11-08 05:54 PM

This morning's ride was in the low 20's (F) and with reasonably dense fog. As I neared the office, I was surprised to see both sleeves of my sweater covered in frost. The fog must have collected and frozen on the tiniest fibers all over them and my gloves too.

Skies were clear otherwise and with no wind, it was a pretty nice day for the ride.

knatchwa 03-12-08 12:36 AM

My commute - as always working from home does not offer much of a commute but the ride today was nice. Weather held up well enough, though that headwind made the workout all that much more exciting.

MIKEnDC 03-12-08 04:37 AM

~38F with a bit of a headwind this morning, and I haven't been rubbed out yet. :D

Thought I saw a squall line on the radar this morning, so I was hoping to give my new Showers Pass jacket (Elite 2.0) a little workout. Didn't find any rain, though, so I'll have to settle for the wind (works great so far!).

tarwheel 03-12-08 06:02 AM

Great ride in this morning, with the temperature near 50F and little wind. We've had fantastic weather all week, and it's supposed to continue until this weekend, when it's supposed to get rainy and cold again. That's one of the advantages of bike commuting -- it's no big deal if you get rained out on the weekends. Yesterday I had my longest commute, riding all the way downtown to pick up new glasses, so I ended up with 40 miles round trip. Took it easy and stopped for a hamburger at a drive-in on the way home, enjoying the sunshine and 60 degree temps.

Mr_H 03-12-08 06:26 AM

Today was the first day in nearly four months that I've been able to bike into work (accident in November that kept me off for a month, and then a really nasty winter that ruled it out). I have missed the feeling of fresh air on my face soooo much. 34 and 10mph wind in my face for the most part. Still a few icy patches, but nothing I couldn't avoid.

I redid the setup on my road bike by putting a rear rack and adding panniers (I used to do a backpack). It's a lot more comfortable for the 8 mile ride, though I do have to get used to the extra weight in the rear. Since I altered my route as well (all road, no bike path), I added more lights to the back of my bike, 3 super flashes.

Cars gave me a lot of distance. :D

genel 03-12-08 07:38 AM

Hooray, first cummute since mid Dec. We've had a heck of a winter here. Nice day, about 30f, no wind, sunny. Traffic was louder then I recalled. And the final mile or two is barely passable. The Nashbar studs made it through. Smooth ice was fine, but the rough patches, whew, quite a work out.

Removed the DIY lights, so bike was a lot lighter. Added drop bars this year. Still futzing with the position, may need to go to a shorter stem.

You'd think the town with the most rabid development could at least run a plow along the bike path.

savethekudzu 03-12-08 07:46 AM

A pretty good ride in, but I'm annoyed by my inability to predict what I need for the temperatures - I rode out in a light windbreaker & short sleeved shirt, but quickly realized I needed to don gloves & earmuffs.

Both of those (gloves & earmuffs) came off again before I reached work, 6 miles away.

DataJunkie 03-12-08 08:11 AM

First commute since I came down with my cold. Cooler weather cycling helps one cough up mucus and all the other lovely things after a cold.
Took it nice and slow. Then decided I could ride the remaining 13 miles and skipped the light rail.
It's good to be back.

Bdaisies 03-12-08 08:33 AM

One more bike in our parking garage bike rack today! People are getting more confident for the weather. Though I'll miss pretty much having my pick of spots on the rack. :(

the wind is your friend and training partner, buglady. Gotta get out there and fight it!

Breezy again on the ride in today, still can't belive how dry it is out there. I wore a long sleeve sweater today as it was a little cooler, but still pretty damn wonderful for March.
