Reading the entries for today, it sounds like it was a fast commute day for most of us. Me too, me too! I thought it was because of the Excedrin Migraine I took before leaving, but maybe it was just a fast day all around.

I took a different route home yesterday, and it puts me on the one road where I'm willing to filter to the front at a red light. One car was stopped really close to the gutter pan; as I approached it I noticed the passenger's window was open. I couldn't resist! As I came up from behind I said, "Move over please," and was rewarded by seeing the passenger jump out of her seat and exclaim, "OH!"

S******ing, I went on my merry way and made my right turn at the light.

Then about a half mile further up a guy in a Porsche Boxster was pulling out of a parking lot on my right. He stopped, saw me, hesitated for less than a second, and then started to go. Too late. He realized he wasn't going to make it ahead of me and slammed on the brakes. I just gave him The Look.

So yeah, I'm not making it to campus today. Luckily my group project is supposed to be emailed in, so we're all going to stay home and work on it over instant messenger.

Well, I decided to not be a weenie  and headed over to the Uni on my bike anyways. Roads were OK once you got out of residential, but the flakes were thick and fast (it's still snowing), and all the slush spray from cars didn't help. Now all my riding gear is sitting in my locker sopping wet. Gotta love Calgary springs.

Very light wind, crisp spring weather, sunshine, my ride this morning would have been perfect if it weren't for me hitting every single red light. >.<

Heh. That'll larn ya. My route takes me along the edge of the reservoir and I don't fancy falling in, so I do wimp out sometimes :)

Left work early at the peak of rush hour. HUGE tailwind. Split lanes on a 6 lane road using all three lanes on my side, both dashed lines, plus the double yellow. Must have passed 500 metal herd beasts on a two mile stretch. Got one horn blown at me - ironically - when I was far right doing what The Law likes. So I moved to the dashed line on my left and waved the black SUV by on my right. He got about two car lengths up and turned right! That's why I don't do what The Law likes most of the time. Had I moved to the gutter he would have right-hooked me for sure.

High Speed - 30.8 MPH

Sweet ride!

JHTC! My wife got out of bed this morning before I did, and when she saw all the snow on the ground, she actually screamed. Loudly, at that. "How bad could it be?" My answer: "****!!!" I didn't bother shaving, and instead jumped in the shower, then dressed and switched wheelsets from slicks to studs. We got away from the house at the usual time and I only lost a couple of minutes on the way in. I would have been faster, but the snow covered my glasses entirely in the first two blocks. After that, I just sort of squinted. The big immobile shapes were parked cars, and the big mobile shapes were moving cars. The really big immobile shapes were houses - I think.

I'm going to head home soon, and after not snowing for a while after noon, the heavens have opened up again. Not the giant flakes of this morning, but it is horizontal.

No, I'm wrong, it's barfing snow again. ****ing Calgary...

Birds chirping, sun shinning, and a cool breeze. What else could I possibly ask for?

:)

"Very windy with mixed snow, sleet (ice pellets) and rain." Other than wet feet, wet hands and low visibility, it was a great ride. Not many bikes out today.

BrooklynRider 04-10-08 07:23 PM

The weather was super nice today. DROVES of bike commuters. There was actually a line after the Manny Bridge waiting for the light to change.

It only stays perfectly cool like this for several weeks before the heat comes. I'll take heat over the chill anytime. Perfect commute. Sunny and 72oF. Light breeze. Good mood over Gotham.

Beautiful day in the Philly area. Today I rolled over to 1000 miles on my folding bike (117 round trips - 8.5 miles plus Amtrak train.

Is that supposed to be JHFC? I laughed for a minute reading this bit.

You mean, "****ing Enviroment Canada" their forecasts for Calgary consistently suck. At 6 am they were saying 1 cm for the entire morning. by 9 am we had 150 cm and no signs of stopping!

EDIT: Errrr... that's 15 cm.... I'm still not fully metric in my thought patterns.

Absolutely gorgeous weather this AM, sunny and low 50s with a little breeze! I had the fastest commute of the year and really enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to temps flirting with 70 this afternoon. I may extend my ride home due to the great weather.

I hate u, see other Calgary reports today for reason why. On the other hand, we have 20C forecast for Sunday, Only in Calgary.

I have very mixed feelings about not riding today. On the one hand I would have awesome bragging rights, particularly over the drivers who didn't make it in on time. On the other, I decided last night I was too tired... I would not be typing right now... i would be collapsed somewhere between the front door and bed.

Did'nt get off work until 12:45 a.m. this morning. I have never commuted by bike at that hour before. Forty-five degrees and a light rain. Put on my rainpants and jacket and started home. It was a very nice ride. Almost no traffic and so peaceful and quiet. Hope I don't get stuck at work this late again but at least I know I don't have to worry about riding home. It was very enjoyable.

Last night at the office I was ready to get on my bike and ride home, and I realized that I had a flat tire. Fortunately I had a spare tube handy, and an extra floor pump next to my desk. It took longer than it should have - I could have sworn that I had spare tubes in my desk drawer, but I looked all over and couldn't find them. I did have a spare (or two, actually) in my pannier. I will patch it this weekend sometime so it is ready to go again...

I found a small hole in the tire - I guess I must have hit a nail or some such somewhere along the way.

By the time I got home, it was getting dark out. In the old days, that could have been a real problem, but last fall I bought lights, so it was no problem at all. My fiancee left the garage door open for me, so I rolled right in :D.

wonderful ride home late last night - a few cars, perfect temps - felt great

Thsi moring was 59F when I left - was wearing just tshirt and shorts - didn't think I'd be a bit chilly when I left but I was - warmed up eventually. Saw another coummter ahead of me but they went straight at the next stop before I could catch up - I went left.

have a good weekend everyone

arnijr 04-11-08 06:41 AM

Spring is definitely here, even with the snow we had Wednesday. Todays ride was nice, sun but some headwind. At this point the studs are not going back on till fall, if it snows I'll just drive.

jpdesjar 04-11-08 06:53 AM

when i left work yesterday it was 60! so i rode a little bit longer just to relish it

this morning was great too, a little bit cooler than yesterday but the sun was wonderful, i feel like i was spoiled this week, i always see the same guy biking in the other direction along my route which is cool we usually exchange a friendly wave and i saw this guy howie that i see jogging in the morning, i love commuting and connecting with these people along the way, much more personable than being in a box feeling isolated from other people

stellar week!
:)

Itsjustb 04-11-08 07:07 AM

Another fast commute this morning, and I even saw another cyclist going the other way on my route. I'm not sure if he was a commuter as I couldn't see if he was transporting anything. However, my route is a REALLY bad place to ride on a weekday at rush hour if you don't have to, so I'm thinking he was.

It's supposed to hit 80F this afternoon (sorry, Calgary folks [Calgarians?]). I plan to leave work as early as I can and take a longer ride home, a route I've never cycled before. I have to enjoy this weather while it lasts, as next week it's supposed to return to normal--lows in the low 30s and highs around 55.

Pig_Chaser 04-11-08 08:48 AM

Beautiful morning today. Sunny and clear which is a welcome break from all the foggy mornings. I misjudged the temperature abit though and was cold during the ride. I guess i shouldn't complain after reading these calgary posts. I saw 4 deer just outside the city, they looked at me with casual interest and went back to grazing.

alpinist 04-11-08 09:10 AM

Today was my first commute. Bought the bike about 4 weeks ago. Beautiful Seattle day. Took 25 minutes, door-to-door. Didn't know how long it would take, so left way early. Wound up killing time in a coffee shop for 1/2 hour before work. Took as long to commute as it does to drive, park, and walk from parking to work.

Strange coincidence: As I locked my bike in the parking garage under my building, I noticed the other 2 bikes there were both Novaras. One was an Element, the other a Randonee. Mine is a Novara Forza. Totally Seattle...

habernac 04-11-08 09:25 AM

Yeah, Calgary is awesome, isn't it? Got to ride in snow both ways. I was totally soaked. Of course, it's the one day I rush out the door and forget my shoe covers. And I can't remember where I read it, be it magazine or message board, but putting your bike shoes on the water heater to dry is gold. They were still soaked at 11pm last night and at 6:30 this morning they were bone dry.

habernac 04-11-08 09:30 AM

oh, and today was "bike to work" day here (I think it's dumb to have it this early in the year). I cut across Prince's Island on the bridge over Memorial. There's a big glaze of ice across the entire thing. I asked the "Bike to Work" representative why they didn't at least put some sand down on it, he just looked at me funny.
