pants for cycling (waterproof and wind proof)
 

I am a real big guy and finding waterproof and windwroof stuff is tough.

You think these would work or would they be overkill?

These would be fine for a motorcycle, but way too warm for bicycling, unless it is below zero.Remember how much heat you will generate with exercise. Layering would be better- leg warmers, tights, wool trousers, jogging pants, rain pants, etc. Nothing so heavy as one layer.

I am fond of these pants I got at REI, Novara Stratos 2.0 Bike Rain Pants. They go over the top of my jeans workdays and are not too hot on my commute. The bottom tapers down to be not baggy. They just came off a sale price so are a bit more now.

+1 on the Novaras. I have been running them a good month in freezing temps with poly long underwear underneath with great comfort.

Bike poncho covers the legs as well, like an arm supported awning.

I have Novara Headwind Pants. With thermal leg warmers underneath them I am good to 35ºF. I get cold easily.

They have large sizes, and although I find that the waist sizes run pretty true, the length is a bit long....

I'm sure you have come to the realization you are getting into bike commuting just as winter is hitting, so you have no time to ease into it slowly. You'd be best off in the long run getting bike specific clothing.

If there is an REI or Performance Bike in your area, you may want to stop by. Even then, you should only take clothing advice from someone who actually rides bikes in cold weather. The right clothing makes a big difference and the wrong clothing is a waste of money.

I have to go on a personal rant here-REI previously had waterproof pants that were $40 (possibly what you had) that worked well for me as well, and I've been duct-taping them in protest that REI tripled the price, but only added pockets and a little bit of tapering. Do you think they were worth large increase in price? I'm going to have to break down and buy another pair, and can't find any other waterproof pants like this for a similar price (though still looking!) Thanks

This is true. I've got the waterproof/breathable rainpants. On cold rain days I wear cycling shorts and legwarmers under them. Great combo. It allows me to leave either the leg warmers or rainpants off for the ride home depending on conditions.

When flush I bought the J&G WP/Br rain jacket, helmet cover and pants. 3 years now and no regrets.

Showers Pass makes good Rain gear for cycling as well .. company out of PDX Ore.

These don't provide full coverage but, combined with shoe covers (8" tall boot-style), I find they are more than adequate for the majority of weather systems I encounter. Especially rain.
