I just walk in w/ my bike like we own the place (work/school/out n about) & at the supermarket or anywhere they have shopping carts I pop the front wheel off & load the frameset into the cart w/ the wheel underneath,
if anyone says anything I madball them, i kid i kid... usually works lol. otherwise, it's a kryptonite mini U
& for realy bad areas it's backed by a Fuggetaboutit chain & a huge industrial masterlock, I forget the model but its real high up on the cut/pick resistant rankings.

KINDA OFF TOPIC QUESTION:
I lost my last key for my Kryptonite, can I order one or do I have to send them the whole lock? I hang at a LBS & they'll vouch Im not tryin to order a key for someone elses lock fwiw.

Krypto NY Noose and locking skewers for the wheels. This combo makes for easy lock up and great versatility. However, the chain and lock do weigh about 8 pounds.

Go to the Kryptonite website and they have information about obtaining replacement keys. You may need a receipt or proof of purchase.

If you didn't register the Krypto then you might be out of luck. The information on the registration includes the required key numbering info. If the lock isn't on a bike you "might" be able to send the lock to them, just don't be in a hurry.

I either use a cheap combo-cable lock, or a hefty chain and strong u-lock or padlock or Abus cylinder lock, all depending upon where I'll be with the bike. Sometimes I will just bungie it to something to keep the wind from stealing it, depending upon which bike and where I'll be.

I should try to remember to post a pic of my minimum security lock, humorous.

Abus Bordo. Awesome lock. Folds away nicely, excellent security (allegedly, anyway), easy to use. Hey, it's German. It HAS to be good, right? ;)

I use pinheads on my wheels, a bike chain connecting the frame and seat permanently, and a mini kryptonite evolution. i live in new york where not only are there pro bike thieves but everyone is a petty bike thief, so any component that can easily be removed any one will take it. so far i haven't lost anything and i don't have to worry about annoying cables and chains. the u lock and pinheads came to like $120 together with free installation and most bike shops will do the bike chain seat thing for free. the only small con of this set up is the mini u lock makes it difficult to lock on unusual places, common in new york like over crowded bike racks.

I currently use just a Kryptonite Evolution Mini U-lock, but my bike is in a very secure location. I plan on upgrading to Pinhead skewers to protect my wheels and getting another U-lock, probably the NY. Cables don't seem to do anything but keep people honest, but I figure most thieves will think twice about two U-locks.

What does everyone else think?

The Pinhead skewers offer some protection against casual theft, but they can be removed easily in seconds using a universal socket (Home Depot sells the Gator Grip brand, $11).

I have a mini U and a cable lock. If I'm feeling really paranoid I take the front wheel off and carry it with me.

Me too! I have an Abus Bordo, they are great, and make a nice whirling mace while riding through rough neighborhoods. I also like the Abus Ring Lockfor my city bike. I tried the AXA brand but the the plastic body didn't hold up as well.

so It includes both wheels and around something solid too.

I also use an AXA ring lock (the defender) with chain. Great choice for a commuter.

I am currently at the NAHBS and saw a very cool bike which had an AXA ring lock, with a cable which retracts into the seat tube made by YiPsan.

I've used an Evo Mini-5 for years, with great success, but it is too small for my new Salsa Vaya. So I now have an Evo Mini-7 and cable on order.

Cryptonite New York is good but heavy. I don't use the cable anymore since I bought the Pitlock system. That only leaves the Crytopnite Mini 9. Its long enough to reach the rack in many needed situations.

I have this as well. The chain is great for securing to pillars allowing me to leave her in view whenever possible. However, I think of it as more of a convenience secondary lock. Good enough to run in to a shop for 10 minutes. However, I rely on a Krypto NY if leaving her alone for several hours (in combination, of course).

Yes. I just bought two. Hurry up because i'm pretty sure they are going to take in a certain amount of orders and then pause the ordering process until they catch up in making them.

I love the Kryptonite combo u-locks. I wish they made some of their thicker ones in a combo style. They are really handy when securing 5+ bikes at any given time and not wanting to deal with as many sets of keys.

Lasareath 03-04-12 09:13 PM

Yea I carry 5 different Kryptonite keys on me. Wish you could go to their website and pick the locks you want and they send you the locks all keyed the same.

I actually think that they offer that service, or at least they used to. Try contacting them and asking.
