I've commuted by bike 228 days this year out of a total of 234 work days and only have one more work day in 2011. Seven of those work days were overseas and on those I commuted by bike one day and cab or office vehicle six days. I've ridden 6,847 miles in 497 hours getting to and from work. This is just over half of my total riding. If I had always taken the most direct and safe route to and from work that would have been about 3240 miles and 193 hours.

Started in May. 109 round trips, 92 hours,1,203.60 miles, 13.0 avg speed for about 136 work days. Was involved in a car accident in Nov. which pretty much ended commuting for this year. I'll try to start up again after the new year.

Not looking good for tomorrow. Freezing rain followed by snow tonight, so I may be done.

100% bike, 100% of the time, as I am really car free for about 18 months now.
I still have two workdays to go. However, to date: 209 workdays (I do like my four-day workweeks) 209 days commuting (100%) 2,806.26 commuting miles, of 4,616.93 total miles to date. (61% of all miles) |
I am enjoying reading the summaries here and feel motivated by your achievements. I purchased my bike in June and quickly decided summer commuting in the extreme Phoenix heat was not for me. I picked it up slightly in the fall but still managed just 263 commuting miles out of 341 total miles. I am looking forward to starting off the year with a bang and my goal is to carry-through all year-long for at least 3 riding days per week. My goal is at least 2,000 commuting miles, although I think I can do much better than that.

Phx, I think that you'll do better this summer. If you can get into the bike commuting groove, where you're doing it every day, by the time summer rolls around, you'll be used to it & just continue riding. It won't seem as daunting.

Didn't keep very good track this year. But guestimate 220 days X 10 mi round trip for 2200 miles commuted during 2011.

Four flat tires, chain popped off the rear sprocket once, otherwise no mechanical problems. No ice and snow here of course; 2 days in rain and wet streets.

Tonight was my last commute for the year. I rode to work 74 nights for 1763 miles. I only had one morning that I hitch a ride home due to a thunderstorm. I had managed to ride to work at least one time a month since March 2010. I'm really going to try and get 100 commuting days next year.
|
Started commuting in June, biked 72 days for a total of 1296 miles (18 miles round trip) and lost 15 lbs along the way. I really hope to get a earlier start next spring and make it into the triple digits next year!
|
90 days this year, would really love to dramatically increase that in 2012. 1,800 miles. Saved $630 on parking, and lost about 25 lbs. somewhere.
|
Started commuting last year in August, and quit when I got hit by a car in July. I'm back on the bike, but I haven't gotten back to commuting yet. I'm not sure I ever will, but I want to. Maybe next year I'll do it. Wish me luck
Stats for 2011: days commuted: 78 (Jan 1 to July 12) Miles commuted: 1461 Total miles ridden: 2126 If I had made it through the year at that pace, I'd have close to 3000 miles commuting... not bad at all. I need to move to Austin or something where there's bike infrastructure. I think I could go car-free if I lived someplace like that. |

I didn't start biking in 2011 until June when I had recovered from broken shoulder. 65 days of commuting (17 mile round trip, 1105 miles). Total miles, 1512. Oh, and I had 24 platelet donations, most of them two units.

I'll update this data with final stats at the end of the month
bike 146 days public transit 49 days. car 9 days (working days where I also had theatre nights, offsite meetings, bringing car downtown for service, or picking up son at airport) cabs 2 days (actually 4 late night rides home) working out of town 25 days (didn't track my transportation, but it included a mix of cabs, rental cars, and walking). completed 20th year of predominantly bike commmuting For the 51 days I took cabs or transit here in Toronto, I took the express bus twice (extra fare) so 100 fares at $2.50 = $250 in transit costs, plus about $100 in cab fares, so $350 for 51 days. Extrapolating from that, had I used public transit and occasional cabs all year instead of cycling, it would have cost me another $1002. I didn't track how much I spent on bike expenses but it was a lot less than $1002. So biking was hundreds of dollars cheaper than the next cheapest alternative. |
211 days commuting. I kept from putting 4664 miles on my truck. I saved 330 gallons of gas and $1240. More importantly, I didn't spew 3.3 tons of CO2 into the air. Over a 30 year career at I've kept 53.5 tons of CO2 out of the air. If you are a penguin or polar bear, you can thank me now.
Oh, and over 30 years, I've saved about $10000 in gas costs (at an average of $1.75/gallon) |
85 round-trip commutes this year, saving 850RMB in Metro fares. Total distance 3938km (2447.5mi). Average moving speed 25.1km/h(15.6mph). Total time 156h 32min.
(Overall distance 5922.7km, average moving speed 24.1km/h, total time 240h 20 min.) Only started when I bought my bike in April. Lost 13kg (nearly 30 pounds). Goal for next year is 8000km total, and at least 120 days commuting. |
Excellent work everyone!
Very inspiring...makes me want to get on my bike for the January 3rd return to work. My 2011 goal was 5000 miles of bike commuting and I made it in 154 days...the weather really bailed me out this year and gave me about an extra month of riding....I will be hard pressed to get to 6000 next year...but I must try. :thumb: Ride on! |
2011 days ridden to work: 219
2011 commuting mileage: 5354.7 2011 overall days ridden: 263 2011 overall mileage: 7519 I'd like to do those kinds of numbers again this year, but doubt that it will happen. If all goes according to plan, my work commute will end in August, and I'll likely have a tougher time getting my miles after that. |
For 2011 commute:
2,720 miles. Haven't counted the days on the bike, but is is most of them. I think I had two flat tires, both on the rear. The commute remains the best part of my work days! |
It looks like I rode to work 230 days in 2011 for a total of 7933 km. To my recollection I only had to drive twice--once for a meeting and once so I could take 5 interns out to lunch. Fortunately, I have great flexibility to my work location, so on days that it is nice, I make the 18 mile ride to my main office and on bad weather days, I ride about a mile to my corporate office. I have yet to see weather in DC that I can't ride a mile in... I also have a folding bike I take with me when I travel some of the time.
|
Hm, I know I biked 233 days in 2011 with the total of 9300 km, but that also includes non-commuting rides. I have reliable commuting stats from April 1 to Oct 31 = 234 one-way rides and 4563 km, as we recorded them at work (Commuting Challenge). I commuted in winter, as well.
|
Ended up riding 1600 more commuting miles than last year.
Days Commuting: 200 Days Not Commuting: 26 Commuting Miles: 6112 |

207 days for 3118.2 miles total. Started grad school in the fall which I also commuted to following work, so that helped the total, although it's only three miles round trip to class from home.
Highlight of the year was the purchase and building up of my new bike, my Surly LHT, which has served me very well. Even managed to get in my first overnight bike camping trip over the summer, which I share even though it's not commuting-related. :) Here's to another great year riding! |
