REI Year-end Garage Sale - What did you get?

Yesterday was the REI Year-end Garage Sale in Eugene. I'm not sure if all the locations had their used gear sale yesterday, but If there was at your local REI what did you get? or even past great sale finds. I'm really happy with everything I got.

Saturday December 31st, 2011 was the REI Year-end Garage Sale in Eugene. This is a big sale at REI, where they sell slightly used gear, returns, and display items. This was the first time I have been able to go to one myself, and let me just say it was well worth the short wait in line to get in. There was a lot of great gear to pick up there and I got myself some presents that I’m quite happy about.

ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 2.0 – MSRP $199.99 bought at $9.83
This is the first real tent I have ever bought, but it seems like it will be perfect for me: 3 season, fits 2 people, pretty light at 5lb 2oz total, packs pretty small. I’m quite excited, the only thing is the tent was not cleaned up before packing away after the last use, so it smells like the outdoors (Angel claims it smells like mossy earth and radishes). No visible mildew, but I should clean it as soon as possible. If anyone has any ideas on how to clean it in the middle of winter, indoors let me know. The biggest problem right now is all the rain we’re getting, so I can’t set it up outside to clean it out and hang. So I’ll need to do this inside maybe in stages. If I can’t get it cleaned out well enough it’s no big loss, it was $9.83.

Novara Arosa Bike Gloves – MSRP S29.50 bought at $9.83
These gloves fit very well and should be a great cool and dry weather glove, when my Novara Stratos Bike Gloves are just too warm. On the tag, the reason for return was “not warm enough”, but these will work well for me. They just needed a little stitching fix, and now they are perfect. I can’t wait to get to use them this coming spring.

Merrell Chameleon3 Stretch – MSRP $120 bought $19.83
The shoes are hardly broken in and all the tread is there, including the fine tread that wears off fast. They should be great for hiking and walking.

GoPro HD HERO Camera – MSRP $239.99 bought $99.83
It was a big surprise for me to find this, and it was a hard decision to get it but I did. Angel and I shoot lots of videos together and we have always talked about getting one. This price was too fair to pass up. I can only imagine no one got it before me because: A. They didn’t know what it was, or B. They don’t do video editing themselves. The camera is in perfect condition. The reason for return was “didn’t like product”, and I don’t really know why they didn’t like it, but I like it already. It has HD video up to 1080p at 30fps, with 127º wide viewing angle. 60fps at 720p and WVGA resolutions allowing smooth slow motion playback with 170º wide viewing angle. With a waterproof case allowing it to go to depths of 180ft (60m), my Fuji XP10 depth is only 10ft (3m). Comes with mounts, including a one for vented helmets. This should get a lot of good, fun video footage that we can use. Great for long bike rides, or trips to the coast. Can’t wait.
GoPro Hero GoPro Hero

I’m excited to get to use these new items and after I will write reviews for them, so stay tuned. There will be new videos as well with the help of the GoPro Hero.

I didn't make it to yesterday's sale, but my local REI also had one two weeks ago. I scored a pair of Pearl Izumi All Road shoes for $8, some PI Barrier shoe covers for $4, a Planet Bike Ecorack for $4 and a pair of neon yellow PI Cyclone gloves for $9. The shoes have a bad seam and needed cleat nuts (generously supplied by my LBS), the covers have a tear around the sole and the rack lacked mounting hardware, but all are now fully functional and in use.

They do the garage sale monthly around here. At the REI in San Jose, you have to show NO LATER THAN 7am and wait in line for 3 hours to be able to get in there early enough to score something good. I think people buy a lot of stuff and then resell on CL or ebay.

Didn't get to the recent sale, but have found some bargains in the past. My hiking boots were orig. $180 marked down to $0.88 - the tag said the orig. purchaser stood in the bathtub for an hour before noticing a little seepage (they're Goretex-lined and supposed to be waterproof). That was ok with me since I don't plan to do extended hiking in either bathtubs or streams. Also found some speakers for my MP3 player that were orig. $30 marked down to $0.03, and a reflective sash that was $25 marked down to $0.80 - I cut up the latter and have sewed pieces to the backs of my cycling gloves, shoes, and panniers.

The main thing I look for at the REI garage sales is cycling gear that was returned because of "not waterproof." I find it almost always means "marketing hype didn't match reality" for the original buyer and "good stuff at low prices" for me.

The last one I went to, I think in March at the Marina store, was a pair of Novara thermal bike tights for $15, and a lightweight kettle/cup and bowl set for $15.

I read it as that he got parts off of a bike that had received damage to the frame while in transit to the store or possibly another customer.

Y'all just go ahead and keep posting away on your treasure finds. The fact that the closest REI to me (Plano) is more than 335 miles away doesn't depress me one little bit... oh, who am I kidding?

I got a PB 1-watt Blaze and Superflash combo for 19.83. Petty psyched about it. Also, I picked up some sweet hiking shoes from the garage sale rack, carried them for 5 minutes as I dug through the rack, put them down for 30 seconds to use both hands, and they were gone when I looked down! Some kid nabbed them. Learned my lesson!

Yeah, people are ruthless at those events. I saw a guy let a set of skis he was looking at fall over and hit another guy in the eye. As the guy who was hit started telling his story about having to be extra careful because he was already blind in one eye, the guy who let the skis fall turned and walked off without saying a word. Of course, that was just before Christmas, and he might have lost out on a deal if he had taken the time to apologize so you have to cut him some slack I guess.

essentially the same deal here, 150 miles. To make it extra annoying, their regional distribution warehouse is only about 50 miles down the road from me, but they don't have a storefront.

It's a well known fact that REI stores are attracted to smugness like moths to a flame. Living in the Portland area, I have four REI stores within 20 miles. If you want a local REI store, give all of your neighbors a vegan, gluten-free cookbook and start a recycling campaign.
