Mild today, -1C. Had to drive my wife into work so by the time I returned home (home -> her work -> home = 10min at most) to bike in to work, I was short on time so I took the short route (4km).
Longer-than-usual route home today as I have to go to my son's school and help out with basketball coaching, 2 practices in a row: leave work at 4, finish practices at 8, home for dinner at 8:45, long day and I'll be hungry although I'll stave off some of the hunger with protein bars. |
Best ride in weeks, despite it being the coldest morning so far this fall with temperatures hovering right above the freezing mark. Stiff N wind, which meant I had a nice tailwind nearly all the way to work. To top it off, I got green lights at all of the long traffic signals on my route, so I made great time -- averaging about 17 mph, which is a fast pace for me riding solo, carrying a load and riding in traffic.

26F/-3C with calm wind this morning. Some ice on the roads from leftover puddles of rain, but it was easily avoided.

After a couple of mornings around 20F, today's 35F felt downright balmy! In another month or two, I'm sure I'll be saying the same thing about 20F, if we're fortunate enough to have such a morning. :-) Yesterday was pretty hard on the unexpected snow we got Monday. Streets are all back to dry pavement.

-15C with a bit of a headwind, coldest day of the semester. The temperature sensor in my garmin seems to be off a few degrees. I was right at the limit for what I was wearing. The ride took 67 minutes for 16km. I tried out a pair of shoe rain covers that I had insulation sewn into. They kept my feet warm but rubbed the crank arms a bit too much. The MUP was plowed yesterday so I rode it for half the ride this morning. The temp is supposed to rise to 0 today.
Last nights ride with a light tailwind was 58 minutes. Got buzzed by a few cars too lazy to switch to the other driving lane. There were a lot of deep ruts on several streets. I'm starting to get a feel for riding in the loose stuff again. Keeping my water bottle in the mesh pocket outside my pannier in stead of in the bottle cage kept it from freezing. Maybe adding a wind deflector to the bottle cage is all I need to do to keep the bottle from icing. |
Cold, I felt pain and weakness in my left leg, weird feeling.
|
I'm confused. Yesterday, I had a pretty miserable ride in, and it took 60 minutes. Today, the roads seemed a little better, I had a bit of a tailwind, it was warmer (0C/32F), I had no mechanical issues, and the trip today took 59 minutes. Why?

It was fairly mild this morning, with temps right around 50F. It rained...but only about first 1/4 mile of the ride, so it was either a local rain, or it was moving the other way. Not much wind, roads where wet, but not enough that there was a lot of spray from vehicles. I might have to take the long way home tonight and try some hills. :) It's gaming night, though, so I might take the medium route so I'm not too late.

High seasonal temperatures (22c / 72f) still holding up even though we're almost a month away from Christmas. Morning commute has began to get chilly and a windbreaker is needed, but the mid-day commute back is easily ridden in a t-shirt.
Here's a pic taken from my return from work around 3:30 pm http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=283763 |
It was upper 30s this morning and evening and pitch dark in the evening. My first ride in these conditions. So, it was a good test of my new cold weather gear and my lights on the return trip. Everything worked out great. Cheeks got a little cold, but really not a problem. I think this is going to work fine. I'll see how I do when it rains, but I've got waterproof gloves, pants and jacket, so I think I'll be OK.
A minor problem is that my eyes tear with the slightest wind in them. More a distraction, really. I suppose if it proved to be a nuisance I could get some goggles. |
I put a camera on the fork of my Pugsley for the ride home today. Here's part of the ride through some loose snow where I'd have trouble keeping in control on my mountain bike. It got warm today and icy tonight so I'll have to take my mountain bike tomorrow.

Well, it was not exactly a commute, but I could enjoy this because I did commute by bike. Road to Coal Oil Point, then decided to see if my cross check with 23mm tires would we ridable on the damp sand at the beach. Tide was low enough that I was able to ride 2 miles to the west to the Bacarra hotel, then three miles back to the east to the stairs at the 6700 block of Del Playa in Isla Vista, CA. It was 70 degrees, very light breeze, plenty of beautiful scenery, and just a great way to spend lunch hour. Look forward to doing it again sometime.
Oh, the commute was great too, it has warmed up to mid 40s in the morning, and mid 60s for the ride home. Living the dream . . . . . |
Nice day today - around 8C and no rain, which is always a treat this time of year.
Wrecked my car on the weekend, so the bike has officially graduated from "preferred mode" of commuting to "only mode". I like how it eliminates the decision making process. :-) |
Commute was great today! High 30's this morning. Wet roads, but not too much spray and no rain! Coming home I had the most amazing sunset. One of my favorite rides of the year!

39F/4C later start this morning = more cars on the road, yuck.
|
5C/41F ... not so bad. a little dark (50°N here) but not so bad.
nice video above with the pug ... i guess that i don't miss being in the NE US so much after all. |
Nice and cool morning, didn't bother to look at the temp but it was nice to get back on the fast bike again. My avs today was 17.7mph and almost ran into another cyclist with no front or back lights. These ninjas need to understand that there's no need for stealth mode in the dark because you can seriously end up hurting yourself or others.

I had such a nice commute yesterday morning, I should have known that today would "revert to the mean." Yesterday I averaged 17 mph with a strong tailwind and caught green lights at all of the major intersections. Today I had nothing but red lights, less favorable winds and my legs were tired, so I averaged about 2 mph slower and my commute took 6 minutes longer. However, the predicted rain was slow getting here and is expected to stop by the time of my afternoon commute, so that will make my day if it comes to pass.

Only the regular commuters are out lately here in the Atlanta area. I think it's not so much the cold mornings that stops people - 1C to 5C is "cold" - but the 90% humidity and wet everywhere is daunting in cold weather. And practically everyone I see is still working out their lighting in the evening. At least I hope so, I'm getting tired of being flash-blinded on the MUP.
I haven't actually met most of the 4 or 5 who are out consistently. One is an older guy, about my age I guess but "normal" physique and condition for an American that age if you know what I mean. He started a year ago last summer, really struggling and I thought he might not make it but I was wrong. He's wound up being pretty tough, and a lot stronger now. I enjoy watching people progress when they keep on hanging in there, and feel that I somehow have a part in that even having never spoken with them. |
Not too bad this morning. Brisk fast ride in. A little sore from the week and because of the temp changes my shoulder was sore. But all in all, door to door was about 20 min. I think I need to wrk out the details on how to make my trip a little longer in the mornings.

Crisp and cold but quite enjoyable:
(taken this morning) http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=283881 |
Boy maybe I should stop complaining about the cold, after reading what some of you ride in.
55F this morning when I left the house, still dark and a good wind going. I need to get some gloves and something to cover my ears for the mornings. Last night coming home I got out of work a bit late, and on the last couple of miles it was starting to get dark and cars were turning on their lights. I stopped and turned on mine at that point, better safe than sorry. |
-7C with a 26kph headwind and sunny. I had to keep my face mask Velcro'd in place for almost the entire trip as the wind felt cold. I rode the mtb today making my best time of the week despite the headwind. I forgot how bumpy foot trampled snow is, the fatbike had really smoothed that stuff out. I had to walk the bike in a few spots is was able to ride through yesterday. Loose snow on the road also required much more care.
I was pretty tired when I woke up this morning. With snow on the ground, the commute requires much more energy. Yesterday I wore my heart rate monitor to get a calorie count for the commute. It reported 760 for the morning ride and 570 for the ride home. I'm not sure how accurate that is. The number was vastly different from riding without the HRM, as with the absence of heart rate it must assumed a leisurely 15kph ride, calculating 330 cal. My cockpit was a bit cramped in the ride in this morning: 2 headlights, computer, garmin, and bell. My Stella light was touching my bell so when I needed to use the bell in the park it wouldn't make any noise. Fortunately my cantilever brakes are MUCH louder than the bell. The sound of a dying goose usually gets people's attention. |
30 this morning and about 40 this evening. Which is warmer than the 24 yesterday . I've been powering my DIY lights with a 16 volt lithium battery pack (XP8000) but it fell out of the pocket in my bag and broke into numerous pieces. Bummer. Back to the very heavy NiCd pack. Ordered a new XP18000, which should just fit into the rear bag.

Very foggy this morning, but great on the way back. Hopefully winter won't happen this year (it often doesn't around here).
|
I get off work at midnight. It's pretty chilly out there tonight, am very glad I packed the long johns. :)
|
I had to the leave the bike at work overnight because I had to help my gf buy and take a new TV home by subway. So, I couldn't ride last night or this morning :(
However, I'm really shocked at how inexpensive decent TVs are nowadays ... we only paid €300 (37"/1080p/LCD/100Hz) with the options we wanted (playing files from a USB stick) http://www.amazon.de/Grundig-LCD-Fer...3056345&sr=1-8 |
Great ride this morning after a tough commute (both ways) yesterday. My legs were tired yesterday and winds took their toll, plus I got caught in cold rain showers on the way home. It had looked like the cold front would pass through quick enough that my afternoon ride would be dry, but no such luck. Fortunately the rain cleared overnight and I had a nice tailwind for my morning commute, so I made near record time -- despite catching every red light on my route.

Took an alternate route along the Potomac river...Washington, DC was in full Fall color...perfect commute.
