Eww, my classes are done and it is zero and pouring rain. The ride home will not be pleasant.

caloso 11-21-12 01:03 PM

Misty rain but fairly warm. Too warm for a jacket, but too wet to not wear one. I hate days like this.

RGNY 11-21-12 06:24 PM

30F in the morning, 53F on the way home. almost have to bring two sets of riding gear.

so on the way home i ended up wearing the base/jersey, that were under my jacket in the morning, and just putting a plastic shopping bag between them for wind resistance on the chest. worked out great.

No commute today, Happy Thanksgiving! There is a 5:00 AM start tomorrow... :(

acidfast7 11-22-12 07:28 AM

4C/38F, not so bad.

brought the gf with me, which was quite nice.

gecho 11-22-12 09:18 AM

The rain yesterday didn't turn out to be too bad. I had a waterproof jacket and wind pants with me so I stayed dry. The only issue was impaired visibility from water on my glasses.

I rode a block this morning before turning around to go back home. Between the freezing rain yesterday afternoon and 10cm of snow on top of that, today's commute is a no go. The snow has made the ice super polished. Would have been the perfect day to try out studded fat tires, but I'm still waiting for them to arrive.

My 4.8" knobby Surly Bud should arrive today or tomorrow, though it probably wouldn't have helped today either.

It's been raining almost non-stop since Monday, so today's overcast but dry weather was a welcome change. Unfortunately some parts of the route to work still has some minor flooding, but nothing that can't be ridden through (carefully).

Here are a few snapshots of my afternoon commute home...

Lol, by sheer chance, I was looking at some old photos I took a while back in Germany during Christmas and was hoping to be able to visit again!

Got a ride in with the wife today with my bike on the back of the car. All was well, looking forward to my ride home, and when I went to remove the seat-cover (plastic bag) it snagged on my tail light and snapped the taillight off :(

Rode home with only the orange reflector on the back of my pannier, bummed about the light. This is why I can't have nice things.

Anyone know if Sigma sells spare parts for their lights? Never mind, I will look it up myself.

gecho 11-22-12 08:05 PM

Turned out to be a 3 day week for me, shortest all semester. Between a temperature of below -20C tomorrow morning, ice everywhere and deep snow ruts, riding 16km tomorrow would be a bit too risky for my liking.

Good decision.

Wow, a warm and strong east wind made it quite a slow ride home. I just relaxed and enjoyed it :)

Sixty Fiver 11-22-12 10:11 PM

110 km by car... it's a little too cold and snowy to ride this distance.

Looking forward to a bikey commute tomorrow and Sunday... have some radical things in the works too.

Didn't commute today by bike because I must leave work directly for the Swiss Light Source to work all night there

"Black Friday" in the U.S., looks like everyone is at the stores...roads were perfectly quiet.

A bit chilly for me 39F/4C but nothing compared to the temps I am starting to see here in the forum. I have a plan to order a shirt/balaclava combination today.

Nobody is here in the office...so nice.

jrickards 11-23-12 07:58 AM

Very mild, 8C, but with a strong (28km/h) wind from the South so even though it was mild, my ear lobes, peaking out from under my skull cap, got cold and I had to pull the cap down over them. At the end of the ride, the wind became a tail wind and I was able to get 57.2km/h out of my bike which was pretty fun!

Forecast a bit cooler this afternoon, 5C, going down to -5C tomorrow.

siran 11-24-12 06:07 PM

I had to take the bus because the valve on my tube blew up. :(

6 for 6 this week! I work full time and take a class on Saturdays, which involves riding to a friend's shed near the rapid transit line. Beautiful day today.

getyourcrayon 11-25-12 07:27 PM

Rode to work for the first time today! There's usually less traffic on Sundays so that's why I picked today. It's at least 9 miles away, but going on the roads less traveled means a couple extra miles. The ride there was more fun than the ride home; work made me tired and cranky today. Everyone at work thought I was completely crazy. YOU'RE CYCLING THAT MANY MILES IN FIFTY DEGREE (F) WEATHER? My manager repeatedly offered me a ride home. Nah I'm good. :D

Conclusion: Fun, but I need practice; will do it again (and again, and again). More subtle conclusion: I think I need a better job. :o

Mr. Hairy Legs 11-25-12 10:25 PM

50 degrees? That's perfect for riding!

That length of ride can wear you out in the beginning. But after a while you get the urge to go faster and faster and it keeps wearing you out :)

I prefer 49.6 degrees F. Actually around 50 is my favorite temp to ride in also - brisk but comfy, kind of "autumn-ny" if I'm allowed to create a term.

vtjim 11-26-12 07:17 AM

30F/-1C and snowy. First time I've ridden in snow on the Soho. (I have a ratty MTB with studs for that.)

I don't have "snow tires" but conditions looked okay, and they were. Mostly just a thin layer of snow over wet. I took it easy on corners and used light rear wheel braking only. The rear wheel slipped a couple of times as I started pedaling from a stop.

It will be all melted and dry by the time I ride home.

dcb23 11-26-12 07:29 AM

Crisp cool morning with no wind at all.

In the locker room at work a fellow bike commutter handed me a copy of a Washington Post article about year-riound bike commuters, enjoy! (all the usual arguments in the comments section): http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...tml?ctab=all_&
