on the commute home last night I saw:

a woman on rollerblades riding a city-bike with bolt cutters and sneakers hanging out of her backpack ... with her bf on blades next rolling along next to her ... lol

Best Wishes to the injured!

very cool temperature coming out of princeton just now. very comfy. so i came down washington from nassau and I see a vehicle that appeared to have its high beams on. about three thirty in the morning this can raise your alarm. i begin to pickup speed and the high beams dont get turned off. never saw a blinker but may have been the high beams. at the CJL or Frist I think it is this guy hooks a left seemingly without slowing. hit my breaks sliiiiiid.
who has to cut off a cyclist coming downhill to turn into a parking atea? scared hell out of me.

M.R.Serecka 08-22-12 02:07 AM

sorry my train arrived. anyway, I shout some obscenity at the driver. they basiclly saw me and raced to make their turn before me. what an assssssp!
hole!
jeep driver if you happen to see this:
please man!
cylce with mushy thing on top coming downhill vs bonehead in jeep flavored exo skeleton. jeep wins. squishy person dead. jeep owner troubled.
don' t be a troubled jeep owner!
i think this is my worst vent ever and none o this was written well or clearly depicted my situation. thougjt i was goimg to hit a vegicle moving easy 20 mph as i was doing prolly 15 to 20 myself

Dark, but pleasant at 64f (18c). A group of deer on the side of the road, and lots of bunnies, who no longer flee when they seem me coming. Only one deer bolted, the others just kept eating. I guess that I am old hat to the morning crowd. A fox yesterday did not see me until I was almost on top of him. I guess their tracking scents are not interrupted by whats going on around them.

vtjim 08-22-12 05:44 AM

Fletchh you just made me realize since my wife and I moved, I never get to see any wildlife on my short, urban commute. I used to see, on a regular basis, deer, wild turkey (the birds not the liquor), fox, bunnies, turtles, and other assorted critters. Now I'm happy if I see a neighborhood felis domesticus once in a while. :P

55F/13C and another sunny day for me. My eyes are back to tearing up in the wind for the first mile or so.

Funny you mention your eyes tearing up...I must have really sensitive eyes, these cooler temps in DC already have me teraing up when I fly down Capitiol Hill.

A picture perfect morning, perfectly still and cool.

Got lucky with the weather yesterday as the showers we had in the afternoon had passed on by the time I left work. It was really pouring about 3 pm. Mornings are starting to get pretty dark when I leave about 6:15 am. I use my lights year-round, all the time when commuting for visibility, but now the headlight is actually lighting up the road. Pretty soon I'll reinstall a small LED flashlight on my helmet, in addition to the handlebar light I use all the time.

chilly ride in this morning. Im not sure if it was the colder air or if Im just freaking tired, but the legs did not want to push today. Im actually dreading the ride home at this point

First day of new commute since moving. Fun commute. Gonna hate winter time and the strong on shore windss...but eh...screw it

A surprisingly good commute. I feel like a true commuter now with 2 panniers on my rack. Of course, my bike is now heavy as **** and is difficult to carry upstairs. Oh well, my arms will grow along with my legs.

Acceleration with all this new weight sucks...but it hasn't been that bad.

groovestew 08-22-12 11:02 AM

Wet roads and trails, but not raining this morning.

Had a near miss with another cyclist this morning - I was about to descend into a ravine as a group of three guys was emerging. The path at the top of the ravine is a bit narrow, and so I moved far right, and one of the guys coming towards me moved a bit too far to his right...and his tire slipped off the edge of the path (maybe a 2" drop) and he just about fell over (had he been clipped in, he probably would have) and lurched into my side of the path. Scared me a bit, but no contact.

I don't often see many other cyclists during my commute, but after a rain, you can see tire tracks on a dirt/gravel trail I sometimes take, and it looked like quite a few cyclists had been there before me already today. It's encouraging to see the evidence, even if I don't see the actual cyclists.

I'm just about ready to ditch my panniers for these reasons (and more).

I gotta carry what I gotta carry, so it's not like I have much of a choice.

I use a backpack. It's not for everyone, I understand, but having alternated between backpack and panniers a lot this year, a backpack is emerging as my favourite.

I actually moved from backpack -> backpack/1 pannier -> 1 pannier -> 2 panniers

The sweat was just too much for me to handle. I too prefer the backpack in terms of feel, but the sweat omg the sweat!

I'm resting (motorcycle) today but yesterday's commute was good. It was dark in the morning but no cars passed me in the 9 mile ride. The sun was just brightening things up when I rolled down the ridge into Dallas.

I decided to skip riding the bus part way home, and just rode the 29 miles home from Salem where I was working. River Road South is part of the Willamette Valley Scenic Bicycle Route, so I went that way. I hadn't ridden that way since I was in college. It's better now. I beat the afternoon rush hour, as I set out at about 3:20. It is scenic. I got home 20 minutes earlier than I would have had I ridden downtown and caught my bus out to Monmouth and ridden 14 miles home, but I was tired. That's a long ride for me. I first did it last week when the bus' bike rack was full and I had the choice of waiting an hour and a half for the next bus, or riding home. I rode home.

I did learn that I can stash my bike at the bus yard in the morning, for the days I work in Stayton. I don't want to try to catch my bus home from Stayton and have the bike rack be full, as that's 50 miles home. I want to do that ride some day, but I don't want to start after 4:30 pm to do it.

animabella 08-22-12 01:21 PM

Today is only my third day of commuting ever, but I love it! The ride in this morning was especially nice. Clear skies, 65*F, and traffic wasn't too bad. I'm really glad that one part of my route (before I cross the bridge over the river) is a paved walking/cycling path, and I see more people than I originally expected out in the morning! I also met another cyclist once I was in downtown Tuscaloosa that was commuting as well (and a much longer commute than mine)...it's nice to see other commuters out on the road, as most of my friends seem to think that I'm crazy! :)

M.R.Serecka 08-23-12 02:10 AM

nice temperature this morning.
alot of traffic for 3am.
running late and tired.
i work about 35 miles from home and while i wish i had the energy to ride those 70 miles daily, I simply wouldnt have the time!hahha
so big ups and much respect to all you long haul commuters.
and get well wishes to the ill and injured

acidfast7 08-23-12 02:13 AM

great! heading out to a strip club on the commute home ... actually, three strip clubs :D

fletchh 08-23-12 04:35 AM

The sad part is that they have built up the area so much that the animals have no place to go anymore. They have adpated to backyards and
slow flow waterinig holes. It is too bad that we couldn't have adapted to leaving them a large area to romp and live, but then again man is not the smartest creature...

Very nice ride in, as the weather continues to be perfect 65f (18c).

Simpletommy 08-23-12 05:13 AM

The weather is hot and super humid. My rear brake is out of alignment and was dragging the entire way to work. I'll adjust it so that it isn't before riding home. It's going to be a slow ride home after a crap day like today...I'm beat.

tarwheel 08-23-12 06:23 AM

My fenders have been getting a workout lately as it has rained nearly every day for the past month. I now feel like I know what it's like to live in Seattle, and I don't like it! Fortunately the showers that we had the last two days passed through about 3 pm with the rain pretty much over by the time I left work, although the roads were still very wet. The humidity is incredible with all the rain we've been having but at least the temperatures have been mild. My new commuter bike has been sitting in the garage rarely getting ridden because it still lacks fenders, so I've been riding one of my old standbys.

dcb23 08-23-12 06:42 AM

I got clobbered by a massive rain strom on the way home yesterday.

Nice cool ride in this morning though.

spivonious 08-23-12 07:08 AM

Second commute of all time was uneventful. Great weather, sunny skies. I need to take the straight lane sooner; someone passed me and then turned right. I didn't have to brake, so not exactly a right hook, but I can see it happening in the future.

I also need stronger legs, but I imagine we could all say that. 7 miles in 40 minutes.

spivonious, I started in June doing the 7 mile commute one-way; started out at 35 minutes. Now. almost 3 months later, I'm down to 25-27 minutes. There's hope! Keep bikin' and stay safe, my friend! :thumb:

**** day, **** week, **** commute home.

I should have driven, and I should have driven with chainsaws on my car for pedestrians and cyclists, and machine guns on my car for drivers.

No seriously Mr. pedestrian I DO LOVE it when you pop off of the empty sidewalk to walk in the street with out looking and taking up the gap between the guardrail and the traffic.

Why yes, gape mouthed mother on a mamachari, please do change your pace in the crosswalk in order to collide with me.

Thank you oh so very much fellow American Service member for seeing just how closely you could get to hitting me while the rest of the street is clear.

The rear brake of my bike now only rubs, but rubs hard when I'm pedaling up hill, the headset flops all the hell over the place, everything squeaks and creaks all the time, and the tires don't hold air when I park my bike outside.

animabella 08-23-12 07:57 AM

The commute this morning was nice, but it took me 30 minutes to complete the ~5 mile commute! I do have to ride on the sidewalk across the bridge, as the cars travel over 55mph over the bridge. That's not -really- a problem, since people don't walk across the bridge; only cyclists use the sidewalk, but there are some parts of the sidewalk that are just really rough on my bike! So, when I enter the bridge, I walk my bike across the roughest parts (where getting onto the bridge is like hopping onto a short curb), but that takes too much time...oh well!

Yesterday, I had 10 minutes to get to the other side of campus, and when I was stopped at an intersection to turn right, and I found one opportunity to do so, a pedestrian (who wasn't paying attention to anything but her cell phone) started crossing the street...I was almost late because of that! Also, around the quad, they have changed the bike lanes on the service only roads so that both directions of the bike lane are together and on one side of the road. The problem is that these cross paths with bus stops (so people stand in the lanes), maintenance workers park their vehicles in the lanes, and people just straight up walk down the road in the bike lane, and are confused when someone tells them to walk on the sidewalk! The joys of a college campus?

meangreen 08-23-12 08:39 AM

I road my road bike today and I forgot to bring a change of shoes so I have to wear my cleats today. I feel like i am walking on sunshine!! Well, if sunshine was a hard plastic shoe that keeps my toes two inches higher than my heels.

Rare AM bridge opening today, other than that a nice ride in. Also beat my personal best time on the ride home yesterday. Not that I'm keeping track:)
