k mart bikes
 

Hello, yesterday employee of k mart, (who also lives in the same apartment building as I) told me he saw a few 250 dollar bikes priced at 70 or 80 dollars. He also said he was going to find some more bikes. I don't have any clue what these bikes look like. But I was wondering what could I do with them. 70 bucks is a pretty good deal. Of course I will research the bikes myself. Are they resellable?? OS it worth the time to try to sell. Anyways any feedback will not be turned down. Thanks.

I am going to guess, they are returns? Maybe, maybe not! Look them over good...
Might find a rider, but reselling not much room for $$..

Walmart does this, paints them bright orange, tires, seats, chain, no returns.
Some have problems, some are fine. Flat tires on most..

What`s the purpose of your question? Are you going to ride it, or just flog it off at a profit? If ride, don`t bother with the resell, They are disposable at that price.

Most of these cheap box-bikes from these huge retail outlets sell bikes with heavy, durable, and over-built aluminum frames. Sometimes they'll feature a hi-tensile steel-framed bicycle. Insofar as the frame is concerned, the bicycle product is quite sound. However, when it comes to components, these are quite possibly the worse bikes you could ever imagine. These bikes typically have the cheapest component materials, that have been poorly installed as a routine.

The Schwinn Hybrids (700c wheel, no suspensions) at big box stores are not too bad.

I'd only trust the Signature Schwinns

I'd guess resale value is around $50. I see them on the local CL with asking prices of $60-$100, but I doubt they sell over for $50.

Had one, wheel problems, several people I know had the same problems. 24 spoke low grade wheels. Mine lost the
nubs on the end of the spokes.

I've only had one box store bike... it came with no wheels and a busted front ring shifter, it was a Schwinn High Timber or some such nonsense.. but it was a solid dependable bike after I got a wheelset/shifter on it and I even used it as my worktime beater/trail beater for quite a few months.. ended up giving it away to a friend who is now using it to get back in shape. If you want to invest some time and care into it, and it's high enough box store quality it'll make a great disposeable beater or indestructable beater depending, but it's not gonna be worth reselling even if all you have to do do is clean it up for an hour.

I thought about selling them. But if I'm not going to make much then its not really worth it. I'm pretty good with my bike so I could fix it up. Although if I were to do that its extra time and money. With the trails just being built in the area tho I'm thinking more people might be looking at getting a new bike. So yes I would resell. If the retail is 250 and I fix it up and add new stuff and resell it and make some cash its still a good deal. I'm not going to try to rip people off I was just thinking of getting some exp.

One reason your idea won't work is because most people don't know anything about bicycle components or bicycle maintenance. All most people know about are bicycle brands. If they see the NEXT brand, or the Magna brand, they think_"CHEAP"!

Therefore, after you've replaced all the cheap components with quality components and invested all of your mechanical skills and time into the bicycle, you'd expect a decent profit. Meanwhile, the prospective buyer is thinking...."I've seen that NEXT bike at K mart sell for $70...I've seen that Magna bike on sale there for $60..."

There's no way they're going to pay you for the actual parts and work that you invest into that type of bike. They'll see you as a rip-off artist and just might call you that to your face, out of sheer ignorance!

I say, you're asking to be seriously disappointed if you take on this venture!

The best place to sell these types of bikes is yard sales. It is best to let the
neighbors sell them for you.

I have done this several times and it works. Set the price where you want
it and the neighbors tell them the bike belongs to someone else and that is
the price, no haggling. Make sure the tires are up and all that so they can
ride them. When everything works they sell pretty quick.

I don't think he's going to sell one of those bikes for anything close to $250

My Schwinn Sierra is a Signature Series bike from an LBS. It came with very low quality wheels. After replacing wheels and some other components, it became my go-to bike for poor weather commuting.

My son has a Schwinn from Target, and its derailleurs, brakes, etc., are definitely lower quality than what came on my LBS Schwinn bike. It would work okay for recreational use, but I wouldn't want to use it for commuting.

If I installed a 150 dollar Brooks Saddle on my New To Me Magna............I would still have a 20 dollar bike.........dam!

Typically, in order to answer that kind of question, it would be much more helpful to know the make of the bike and the components, the size, etc.

If you simply look thru craigslist and see people selling these kind of bikes, they are pretty much asking for them what you are going to be purchasing them for. I would personally stay away from them myself.

You can commute to college on one, so then the good bike next to it will look even better.
and they will leave yours there.

why not sell them at your own yardsale and just say they belong to YOUR neighbor and the price is not negotiable? that way you eliminate the complication of actually having to have a neighbor that is willing to do you a favor (which would be my problem).:rolleyes:

Small town! Neighbors are more like family. I don't have yard sales very often, several here have two a year. All the
law allows. The ones that have done the best for me won't take any money. I invite them over for steaks a couple
times a summer.

They know if they need me, I am here for them. And they for me.

Where a hand shake is a legal contract!

Where honor is foremost and friendship is something you can take to the bank!

Just leave those bikes alone, not worth the hassle messing with them.

No news about what kinds of bikes there is. Im thinking of not selling these bikes. Thanks for everyones help. I guessing the bikes have been in the store for a while. Also lots of people have more then likely seen them and thought " no thanks" hehe. Oh well just a thought I don't think I was ever going to go throught with it.

My daily 15-mile round trip commuter is a WM 700c Schwinn hybrid w/front suspension. 1000+ miles with just normal maintenance. I treat it pretty roughly so that I can have a major failure and have an excuse to upgrade. So far, no luck. You can do O.K. with a WM/KM bike. (And saving on my commuter gives me more $ to spend on my weekend ride.)
