23* and comfortable this morning
My 12.4 mile ride across Raleigh was pleasant at a brisk 23*. Clothing was as follows:
Head: Nylon skullcap under helmet Torso: REI long sleeve light base layer (100 wt), Pearl Izumi short sleeve shirt, Pearl Izumi Select (200 wt) long sleeve jacket, wind shell Legs: PI medium wt tights, MtB shorts Feet: Wool 8" hiking socks, Bontrager MtB shoes, toe wind shield I was cool as I left the house. Face was cold and I was certain I was going to REI for a balaclava tonight. Half a mile in I was comfortable. Two miles in my face was fine. 5 miles in I was sweating. 10 miles in my toes were getting cool. All-in-all quite nice. The only change I will make is full booties for the next sub-30* commute. |
Riding in the cold isn't bad if you're dressed for it, have you seen the winter cycling forum? Lots of tips there....

Its a rare and wonderful feeling when you get it just right.
|
I've always found the challenge isn't to stay warm enough, but to not go too far and overheat early on in the ride.
|
Yep, a little on the cool side to start is best.
Now, those balmy 80 degree summer mornings....... |
