It took 9 months for thieves to steal a NYC bike

"If you lock your bicycle to a CityRack in SoHo, how long will it take before mendacious thieves pick its bones completely clean? Well, judging by the poor dismembered bike in this time-lapse video, a little under nine months—or 36 seconds."

Thieves steal my bikes all at once (two so far). I really hate a thief.

I am surprised it took so long. I have seen bikes gutted in just a couple days.

Outside Magazine this month has an interesting story from a writer who had numerous bikes stolen. He talks to the police in San Francisco and Portland--two of the few places where bike theft is taken somewhat seriously in the US--and finds out a lot of things. It's long, but worth the read.

Anyone else notice how the lock disappears long before anything secured by the lock was stolen? Seems like the film crew got tired of no one stealing their bike and moved things along. I mean, who would remove *just* the lock?

Yeah weird how the u-lock disappears without the bike. Also the pictures change a bit fast for my liking, and aren't really shot in exactly the same place so the effect is sort of lost.
