Mostly here in the US things are already laid out in miles. That's why it is going to be hard to switch over. If you've ever flown over the midwest look at all those squares laid out in miles, 640 acres to the square mile, 160 to the square 1/2 mile (or is that 1/2 mile square?). Thing is I can estimate acres roughly by fractions of a mile from estimated yards. A lot of people here can.

Now convert the 640 acres to ~259 hectares (258.985), the 1/2 by 1/2 square mile is ~0.8km by 0.8km for ~65 hectares. Break it down into a lot 1/4 mi (~0.4km) by 1/8 mi (~0.2km), 20 acres (~8 1/8 hectares). Just can't do that in my head. Sure, eventually we'll switch. After all we have spreadsheets nowadays. Don't have to do simple math in our heads no more.
A "SECTION" is 640 acres, so (in the old days) a 1/4 section (160 acres) was a typical "homestead" size. That was later quartered to give 40 acre plots to go along with your mule.
Also, in those areas, a section was a township and thus would have a easier to remember name.

A stone?, is that like a bushel of beer or a yard of whiskey? We still use miles in USA, but some people get confused when I tell them the tires on a 700c bike and 29" are the same.

I think Metric is the superior measurement for most things, but use imperial measurements because I'm in the US and that's just what we do.

I will say that the one thing metric is inferior for is weight lifting. It's just more satisfying to use lbs because the numbers are bigger!

Well, the rims are the same... I think it's reasonable not to picture overgrown mountain bike tires when someone says "700C".

I switched my last cyclometer to metric in '07... right before it died, and I have been using km ever since (just through google maps and mapmyride.com).

On my mileage spreadsheet, I have columns for both, though.

I wish we could switch to metric time, so there would be 100 hours in a day. The entire latitude and longitude system should be revamped to metric. It would employ thousands for years to come.

I personally prefer the Furlong/Firkin/Fortnight (FFF) system. It's nice to be able to cruise at over 150kfur/ftn in the car.

Azesty are you still in Chengdu? I just moved back to Beijing and will be here for the next couple of years.

Metric all the way.

I've only ever lived in Australia and Japan so it's metric for me.

Metric is clearly better and it's too bad the US didn't gradually shift to metric while the progressives still ran the government. However, with the current state of American politics, it will happen no time soon if ever. As soon as someone proposed switching to metric, no matter how gradual, all of the conservative talk-shows would have a hay day and it would become the latest hot button issue for them to fulminate about. Politicians would jump all over it and accuse the liberals of trying to force everyone to surrender to the monkey kms.

I'm a string proponent of the metric system and wish we'd implement it ASAP in the US. As others have said, though, ain't likely to happen anytime soon. For the time being I'll have to consider myself satisfied with occasionally switching my cyclocomputer over to km...

I like and prefer metric. It is just easier for me, I use pounds for my weight though.

Infants and children's medicines are dosed age and weight, and our pediatrician said to go by the weight as our boys are so big.

I like to measure my rides in nautical miles, but if I'd like to make it sound longer, I'll use chains instead.
