Yes Endomondo is what I use. I track my daily commutes and rides as well.

No, but sometimes I think that I should, for no other reason than scheduling drivetrain maintenance. I've put a bundle of mileage on it already, though (but not thousands like some of you got), and if I get a computer for it, I might be able to estimate what it's got within a couple hundred or so when I set the odometer.

I'll probably get one on my next commuter. Maybe I'll mount it so I don't see it while riding because I think it's kinda nice when I can just ride and not think about the numbers staring up at me from the handlebars.

YES, and I made Excel worksheet. And I put it on my blog, so others can track their mileage, too...

...and you can get it:

BikeLog 1.0

BikeLog 1.0 (Excel 97-2003)

Yes, just for statistics and maintenance using Endomondo for Android. Whenever I forget to turn on the GPS or can't (low battery), I add the ride using the websites manual entry feature.

Tracking miles seems like a ego-boosting task.
Exactly! Many people carry a sense of pride in their accomplishment of switching from the automobile to the bicycle to commute to work. Nothing "dumb" about that!

I use a spreadsheet I downloaded that was created by a guy named Mark Pankin. Google his name and mileage spreadsheet, and you should quickly find it. Since it's like a calendar of sorts I find it handy to add via a comment on cells when I performed any dirty of major maintenance or replaced equipment. That makes it easier to remember how many miles I have on a set of tires, a chain and cassette, etc.

It's also fun to look at how many miles to manage to rack up over time. When I first started commuting a few years ago, I was amazed to realize that my daily commuting mileage poor me on track for approx 3000 miles of riding a year. I had just quit smoking at the time, too, so anything I could do to motivate myself and stay excited about my new choices in life was a positive.

Well, I record it on my phone but I don't look at totals, mostly I look at day-to-day (or bike-to-bike) speed and time variation.

Commuters: Do you track your mileage?

Unfortunately yes.

I'm pretty sure my speed and distance would be more impressive if I just estimated it.

No, I don't track my overall mileage over a period of time beyond daily. I just don't see the point. I do, however, track mileage from point to point and miles covered in a given day. But that information isn't logged in any retrievable way. I just keep an idea of how long it should take me to ride a particular route to get to points A, B and C, and then back home.

One thing that I really enjoy now that I'm almost 60 years old is being able to look through all of my old annual bike logs. They document all of my miles, and there's a brief description of every ride and every special event that is bicycle related. When I was younger I wasn't that concerned with it, I guess, but for some reason I just kept writing. Now that age and wisdom are creeping in I love being able to look through the logs and remember some of the feelings I had and some of the special rides I may have forgotten otherwise. No, I'm not living in the past - I just am grateful that I have so many great Bicycle memories. I'm saying to you young guys, go ahead and start keeping logs and tracking mileage and taking notes. Some day it may be very special.

A guy I ride with keeps a bike log, w/ all kinds of annotations. It is cool. I just can't make myself do it. He is entirely a hobbyist/athlete, I have too much commuter 'gotta get there, I'm always late' in me...

I never kept a dive log for scuba either; and all of my dives but one were paid, so that's the kind you're supposed to log!

I add the distance to a spreadsheet at the end of the week. The spreadsheet does the rest

I logged dives, over 800 of them. I was paid for some, paid for others, some were free.

I currently do not track the mileage on any of the bicycles, but I am going to start. I plan on getting a cheap Cateye computer just to have an odometer for maintenance reasons.

Sure do, both using pedalmybike and Garmin Connect. It's fun to watch the kilometres build up, and it provides motivation to me to keep at it. Always fun to break personal bests for average speed, etc.

For those who track your mileage, does your commute change from week to week? Mine stays pretty much the same so a simple math does the trick.

Mine changes daily. I will change routes on a whim, or take a scenic detour. Sometimes I swing by the house and pick up my son for a few laps around the neighborhood. My mileage will range from 26 to 40something miles a day.

My commuting mileage often varies quite a bit due to weather, work schedule and other factors that keep me from riding. My route is pretty much the same every day, but I sometimes tack on an extra few miles when I'm feeling good and the weather is nice.

For those questioning the value of tracking, I can think of a number of reasons why the data are useful:
-- Keeping up with maintenance, tire wear
-- Training purposes
-- Convincing your spouse that the money you spend on cycling gear is not a waste. At 55 cents/mile, my commuting saved $2,365 worth of wear and tear on my truck last year.

Most importantly, like Tractorlegs, it's a way to chronicle and document your cycling adventures. I couldn't explain it better than he did, but he echoed my feelings exactly. When I was in college, I hiked the entire Long Trail in Vermont and kept a daily journal. I still go back and read that from time to time. Same with my cycling logs.

Changes all the time. In the morning it's just the same ride every day, a straight shot over to the bus stop. But in the afternoon, there's shopping to do, post offices to drop things off at, bike shops to hang around (until the employees start making "faces"), sightseeing to do, etc. Mileage is never the same on the trip home!

I refuse to track my commuting miles. What I enjoy most about the cycling commute is the entire disconnect. No cell phone, no computers, no GPS. It's time reserved for myself.

The only time I used a cycling computer was on a tour in Italy to track the turns in kms.

As for maintenance, I find requirements more a function of riding conditions than just miles. Lots of hills, rain, road salt, sand yields more drive train wear. Inspect/change cables/housing if performance deteriorates. Lube chain once a week or after riding in the rain. Visually check tires for wear, damage with each inflation. Measure chain for wear and inspect brake pads about once a month. When I feel like it I do a complete tear down/rebuild maybe every couple of years.

Still not convinced there is any value in logging miles.

Maintenance and tire wear are not dependent on mileage, but on actual wear, which varies depending on the conditions. I use a chain checker, and visually inspect my bike at least weekly. I listen to the drivetrain while riding, which is the best indicator of wear.

Not training for anything, just getting to work and back. However, there could be value if I was training.

I probably save money by bike commuting, but quantifying the actual amount is a futile exercise, and doesn't take into consideration the more important non-monetary benefits. Unlikely anyone's spouse is convinced by presenting a log of miles ridden.

After a few years, I suspect bike commuting wiill cease to be an adventure worth chronicling.

I don't get motivation by logging miles in a spreadsheet, but if it works for you, great.

I used to, but tracking my mileage seemed to make me want to find ways to continually increase my mileage further still, putting more wear and tear on the bike as well as myself.

Someday I'll get around to removing the cycling computer off the bike, since the battery has gone dead quite some time ago.
