My commute made the news...

I was stopped by a reporter from the local newspaper last week on my commute (bike commuting isn't too common around here). Actually made the paper: https://www.eotfocus.com/event/article/id/19858/

Nice article. But is that you in the photo? The article says Trek Mountain Bike and Bright Orange vest. I see a Trek Road Bike and a Lime Green vest in the photo...

Cool story. What speed are you averaging? It says you ride 28 miles in less than an hour. That's pretty intense. Is that 28 miles round trip, and 30-55 minutes each way?

42mph? Is that a typo? I hit 42 once, but I didn't think they had hills like that in MN.

She (the reporter) made a few incorrect statements. I only ride the mnt bike when the shoulders have snow/ice on them (the shoulders where clear the day of the picture). And yes, the vest is more green than yellow.

The time she put there was one-way, so 30-55 (I actually told her 35-55) for 13-14 miles. 35 min is achievable with a nice tailwind and 55 with a headwind.

There are some very hilly areas in Minnesota and some areas that resemble North Dakota. I have a sizeable hill on my alternate route and can hit some decent speeds going down.

The remarkable thing is that he can apparently ride 28 miles in 30 minutes while only hitting 42 mph. Something doesn't add up, but I think that's typical for light newspaper articles.

Nice story though.

You mean a reporter made a mistake? Say it ain't so! I used to believe that journalism hit a sharp decline in the 1970s (coincidentally around the time I entered this world), but that things had been better years ago; that back in the good ol' days reporters actually pursued accuracy. As I've gotten older, I've come to accept that it has always been more about telling an entertaining story (and selling advertising) or pushing an agenda than it has been about conveying accurate news to the public.

But the write-up is good to see anyway. I'd never heard of the Bicycle Commuter Benefit Act. I'll have to look that up.

Live and learn. Everything I know about MN comes from watching Fargo, and listening to A Prairie Home Companion.

Have a great fifteen minutes!

You weren't late for work, were you?

I've had people photograph me for some reason... in fact it happened again just the other day. I keep thinking it might be for a cycle commuting piece in a local paper or something, but maybe they're just weirdos.

I was on my way home and saw this van stop in front of me and thought I was going to get some lecture as to why I should not ride bike on the road, etc... In agreeing to the story I told the reporter I wanted to raise awareness of cyclists to other drivers and to inspire others to get out on there bikes. So even if the story is riddled with errors, if I helped accomplish either of those objectives, it makes it worth it.

Fargo, thats a classic...

Nice article! I feel honored to know someone famous! Hopefully the article will encourage others to commute on their bikes, too.
