Cold, windy and raining...

"Cold, windy and raining...the perfect day for a ride"

That's the slogan of Portland's Worst Day of the Year ride, though by some strange karma in eight years they've never had more than a light mist and it's often 60 degrees and sunny.

Yesterday, however, lived up to the slogan. It wasn't terribly cold (40-50), but the winds were 20-30 mph gusting up to 50, and Beaverton got nearly 3 inches of rain. My rain jacket absorbed so much water on the way home that the cuffs were still wet when I put it on this morning. I think this is the worst weather I've commuted in. It was fun. Then this morning when I left the house it was snowing!

And since no thread is complete without pictures, I'll share this. When I got home I found that the top of one of the Douglas Firs in my back yard broke off and crashed onto my deck.

I'm glad the tree didn't come crashing through your roof, Andy_K. I like your attitude: fun. That's a lot of rain and wind and snow. I hope your ride home was safe.

We don't have spring here, just summer and 9 months of rain.

What's summer, I heard about this from some people, but I have no idea what summer is.

We didn't have one in 2011 but it did stop raining for a few months. Actually December was pretty dry. The cold didn't bug me. I don't call it a summer, though, if we don't get at least one day over a hundred degrees F.

Today it's warm windy and rainy

Don't tell the trees it's not spring, they are beginning to Bud and Bloom.

In the decades that Chris Burke has worked as a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Seattle, he's disciplined himself to have no expectations this time of year.

In fact, he's renamed the seasons and declared them to have no ties whatsoever to the solstices and equinoxes celebrated in other parts of the world.

Around here, he said, July and August are "summer," September and October are "fall," winter lasts from November through February and there's no such thing as spring.

He's dubbed March through June "disappointment."

Having lived in places that have actual winter, I'd have to disagree with part of that. He's spot on about March through June though. Daily rain in March is much more demoralizing than daily rain in December.
