Tights do not get caught in your chain and are comfortable.

The chamy makes it easier to sit on that hard bike seat.

Watch sales and you can get bike specific clothes cheap.

I wore "regular" clothes for years. When I got my first pair or bike shorts I was amazed how much better the ride was.

It does give you that "poofter" kind of look but if you are still riding in New England at this point, lots of people will be giving you funny looks anyway.

That's why I prefer shorts, to avoid getting my pants legs getting caught in the chain. And when it gets cold, I use sweat pants. And it it is really, really, cold, I use Thinsulate under the sweat pants.

I can honestly say that anyone who pushes hard enough and long enough on a commute will eventually go to cycling specific clothes. I was the same way.
But if I'm going at 50% of my max heart rate half asleep, then I probably only need to roll up my pant legs.
