Heck in Ontario we have a 1 meter rule from the curb or parked cars for cyclists, and I take up that full one meter, makes cars have to slow down and outright change the lane to try and pass me. Sure they get pissed but means I don't get these close calls often.

You know what the real problem in this situation is? This so called "mom and pop" business is owned by either the idiot driver or its their son/son-in-law and they are covering his behind.

Jim
Not true. There is no such thing as a "One-metre rule" in Ontario. It's a rule of thumb. In Ontario, cyclists must ride as close as practicable to the right edge of the road. However, we are entitled to a full lane of traffic when required.

I'm an avid disc golfer and this has caused a lot of banter on the prominent disc golf site. Of course, a lot of laymen are advocating for the rights of motor vehicle drivers.

I must say, I'm rather embarrassed to be associated with people of that mindset.

800 numbers work in USA/Mexico/Canada unless you do funky extension codes ... Like Germany 01090-001-800- or France 0800 99 00 11 or Greece 00 800 1311 etc

https://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/pub...ction3.0.shtml

Accordingly, cyclists should ride one meter from the curb or close to the right hand edge of the road when there is no curb, unless they are turning left, going faster than other vehicles or if the lane is too narrow to share.
Which is referencing this:

HTA 147 - Slow moving traffic travel on right sideany vehicle moving slower than the normal traffic speed should drive in the right-hand lane, or as close as practicable to the right edge of the road except when preparing to turn left or when passing another vehicle.
Which in turn, "as close as practicable to the right edge of the road" includes for both cars and anything else for that matter not driving over every sewer at the edge of the road as they can be a safety hazard, and there is no room to maneuver with the closer you are to the curb, hence the 1 meter guideline used by the MTO, and carried over to both automotive driving and cycling.

It is also the distance the city of Toronto has been installing the new "arrow" bike lanes with, the tip of each arrow pointing forward is about a meter away from the edge of the curb. To comply with the reasoning that going over sewer grates and hugging the curb in general can be a hazard.

And yes we can take up the entire lane when required, I was not suggesting otherwise, was just mentioning hugging the curb over all is a bad idea, which is why I like our guidelines here.

Jim

You are correct, but I insist that it is a guideline and not a rule. I feel it's important to make that distinction. It might be a matter of semantics, but we are likely in agreement on road use.

I read the whole thing. Some posts are pretty hateful towards cyclists. Of course I guess the same could be said about our forum sometimes. Oh well it was fun to read anyway. Thanks for the link.

Jesus! Disk golfers are hateful! Remind me never to try disk golf. Arguing even that bikes shouldn't be on the road because they don't pay for gas and the tax that goes with. What about horse mounted cops or bicycle cops?

Oh wait, I don't think anyone besides Texas has horseback cops. Still, bike cops.

Anyways, why punish us for their stupid driving and being smart about not spending hundreds on gas. The SO filled up the other day, and it cost him sixty bucks! He doesn't even drive a gas guzzler!

Please don't think that all disc golfers feel that way.

After all, there is a lot of hate generated on most forums.

Disc golf is an amazing sport, btw.

I read a few pages of the disc forum and saw some pretty reasonable responses - rather well thought out.

One can only hope, one can only hope. I'm sure (or at least I hope so) that by now that they realize that their employee was the aggressor and not the cyclist. And that they owe not only the cyclist in the incident an apology but the cycling community an apology as well.

Guys... since I work in Ad industry... here is my suggestion. If you want to boycott with review... on google, insiderpages, yelp, yellowbooks, local paper, citygrid, etc... those, these people usually don't have control and can't delete the reviews on their whims. Just my 2c. It would be a lot more effective than boycotting in traditional means or prank calling 800 number (which I can't agree with).

Interesting, one can only speculate in that if OP has received some sort of legal cease and desist in showing the video to the public.

Good possibility.

Also, seems the driver of the van is named Scott and Scott lied about being the owner.

Scott is not the owner of the Clearwater disc golf store!!
If I were the owner, Scott would have been fired already and an apology posted for his actions, rather than a cover-up.

Calling the shop to let them know that you do not appreciate the drivers dangerous actions is far from prank calling.

Its also possible the poster of the video has gotten enough negative attention that they decided to make the video private to limit more people from responding negatively.

Ah man, I didn't get to see it.

I actually live right on the edge of a fairly highly-rated DG course according to that DG site. I walk to the park with my son several times a week and cross the course, and I'm always amazed at how many people are out there playing. I've never tried it myself.

Most of the post by the disc golf guys ranged from good to very ignorant, but none were way over the top until this guy:
You know who else rode bicycles? The Hitler Youth. I rest my case.

How is calling to voice one's displeasure at the actions of one of their employees and their constant deleting of any and all negative comments on what happened "prank calling?"

I may have to do that myself as for <Sarcasm>some strange reason</Sarcasm> they haven't responded to my e-mail.

How mature is it of the company to not respond to the concerns of their potential customers, as well as deleting all "negative" posts about what one of their employees actions?

Agreed, given that not only was the employee driving a company vehicle but it appears that said employee was on the clock and engaged in some sort of company related activity Scott getting fired would be appropriate.

And I agree that the company needs to issue an apology to both the cyclist in the video as well as to the cycling community.
