I bring an extra pair of drawers w/ me and change prior to the beginning of shift. |
Yep.

I remember I used to commute in abnormal heat two years ago. The temperature and distance were analogous. I used the lightest cycling jersey and clinging shirts, took a shower after trip, and put on usual office clothes. Sweaty underware was not problem for me. I weared synthetic boxers. I felt myself quite comfortable when they dried. So try spandex!

If padded shorts aren't a requirement, you could try some light weight running shorts with the thin brief built in. They are shorter than bike shorts no underwear required and would be about as cool as you can get without spandex.
|
I use a hybrid bike with a rack and trunk. I wear mesh lined baggy shorts and don't put on underwear until I'm at work and changing into work clothes. No showers but the morning commute isn't too bad. My personal best was 3 days at 111*F and one at 114*F last year. So far, I've had two 100 degree days this year including yesterday. 108 today.

You can buy cycling shorts that look like regular hiking shorts but have an inner liner. No way I would ride 15 miles or 30 miles wearing regular shorts and underwear. "Spandex" cycling gear may look goofy to you, but you would probably quickly get over your consternation if you actually tried them. Cycling shorts have pads that make them more comfortable for sitting on a saddle and are made of fabrics that quickly dry after getting sweaty.

Lycra and then a pair of shorts on top of that.

plus 1 on tar!

You could also just get some moisture wicking underwear. I think Target sells some. If you want underwear with a chamois that's available too, but that you'd have to go to a shop or an REI for.
I think we had 3 or 4 days that were over 100 last year. That's a lot for us, but there were still plenty of people on their bikes on those days from what I remember. Stay hydrated. Don't push too hard. Some years we don't see triple digit temps at all. |
I rode all through our last summer, which broke a lot of records. 50 or so days over 100 degrees(And quite a few over 110). I just wore the Champion branded cheap wicking stuff from Target. Shirt and basketball shorts(Little longer than the running shorts). Just make sure you stay hydrated. Your ride is longer than mine, so you might consider a bottle of Gatorade for hydration instead of straight water. I sweat a whole lot when it's hot.

Ah Redding! But at least it's a dry heat, am I right? (I have vivid memories of driving to the ballpark to play a double header (Am. Legion) in Redding. We passed a bank and the sign said 120F. Yowser.)
Anyway, my advice is to keep moving, find a tree-lined route if possible, and drink, drink, drink. Oh, and wear sunscreen. |
Perhaps some wool undies would do you good. Champion makes a cool max or whatever boxer with mesh "fly" that's decent.

There has to be some shorts out there that have a biker short inside and a "regular" looking outside. If not then I am looking for investors. LOL
|
Minus33 merino suits my bill on underwear. No chafing for me on this one, etc and dries quick. (Sugoi, craft didn't work out for me). Another option is padded mesh liners... however, those hold moisture rather well through the day and probably not sanitary. Recently, I've been making the commute 45 miles one way with the other way mostly on train and just suit up... (bicycle shorts)

Mountain biking shorts.

BUT go to TARGET and get one of those regular looking stretchy fabric shorts sold as "golf" shorts. I got a pair and it works. |
