A little snow shuts this city down...

I live in Victoria BC and we rarely ever get snow, sometimes go for 2 or 3 years without snow. Usually when it does come it lasts for a day or two, but it shuts the city down. Few cars drove today, lots of accidents, vehicles in ditches etc.

I got alot of strange looks as I rode past everyone on my DH bike. Hahahahahaha...suckers. :D

halfbiked 01-07-05 12:19 PM

Sounds like Denver.

KleinRider 01-07-05 12:40 PM

Central Georgia is the same way. The mere *threat* of snow in the forecast causes HUGE crowds at the grocery stores where all the water, bread, and milk are bought in a matter of minutes.

I think the big problem is that we have way of scrapping the streets and any sort of spreaders are few and far between. (probably the case up there too)

notfred 01-07-05 01:12 PM

Haha, you're riding a downhill bike around town? I bet that's effecient :)

timmhaan 01-07-05 01:15 PM

even new york is like that. it's the local news that hypes it up. big flashing letters that say WINTER BLAST heads up the nightly news if there is even a chance of snow...doesn't matter how much either.

chicharron 01-07-05 01:40 PM

we just got an ice storm Wednesday here in Kansas City, and of course the television newstations over-hyped it in advance. People were all panicked over it because of two years ago, we did get clobbered with a January ice storm, and thousands were without power.

Ya, where I grew up this would have been considered a mild snowfall. I just heard that the airport, buses, and schools are all closed. If my bosses send us home I'm gonna go ripping around town on the DH laughing at these silly ******s. Heck, I might even pull out the unicycle!

I probably could have managed on my hybrid, but the tires are semi-slick.

That would be too funny; a unicycle with a studded tire! :D

jeff williams 01-07-05 02:30 PM

Ya i'm getting around in it pretty good, just under inflate the tires on my mtb.

Was a bit of shock this morning...Gotta understand, yes it's Canada...but it does not ever really get cold on the south tip of Vancouver Isl (Vic).
Nobody in Victoria has sno-tires.

The Palm trees hate the sno.

Ah yes, Denver. 300 days of sunshine does suck. It was 0 yesterday morning, but tomorrow we will hit 55. I suppose I'll have to wear my short sleeve shirt and shorts on the dry bike path. Can't forget the sunscreen. Or should I just drive 60-100 miles and ski Winter Park, Loveland, Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper, Vail, Beaver Creek. Can't decide. 55 degrees or 2+ feet of snow at Vail/BC?

But please don't move here. People can't drive. And we don't have enclosed passageways like they do in Minneapolis between buildings to protect us from the sun and warm weather. You might get skin cancer.
:p

billh 01-07-05 03:21 PM

St Louis too. It seems like people are caught off-guard by the first snow every year. They have no recollection of how to drive in snow. It's chaos. You would think the end of the world has come. Completely ridiculous.

What a blast!
Went out again, decided to avoid the roads and ride the greens.
Victoria is a well treed city, most of the 'berbs have grass strips 'n trees between
the sidewalk and road.
I just rode those, mtb'd over everybodies driveway sno-piles -punching holes in them.
HAhaaa -rode on lawns..
Big knobbed, slightly underinflated mtb tires on frozen grass\snow work hella good.

The roads are nasty tho-

My bike looks cleaner... :)

In a snow storm? More efficient than your road bike or car!

Hey Jeff,

I did about the same on my Uni. It was great! It's got a big fat knobby tire, which I deflated a bit. Reminds me of the Simpsons episode when the city shut down and everyone played in the snow.

Get us a pic! that sounds great.

I can imagine a car driver struggling, looks over and a guy on a unicycle rides past. :roflmao:

pedal 01-07-05 06:53 PM

I don't have anyone around to take a pic. For that matter my camera isn't digital. I'll try though.

jeff williams 01-07-05 07:15 PM

If you use a 35mm, get them to c.d it as well as print. London.D does it I believe.
Pop it in the computer.
?
If you pic the sno anyway.

cryogenic 01-07-05 09:02 PM

I live in Knoxville and it's the same way.... just the mere mention of snow sends everyone to the grocery store to buy a week's worth of bread, milk, etc. Schools close, businesses close, the town just rolls up the sidewalks. People also can't drive worth a flip in it. I'd much rather be on my bike in that kind of weather.

Ya I do that usually, but again I'll have to wait until my friend's come home from holidays to get one of them to take such a pic.
