lmao, thanks for making me laugh at work.

LAE 06-06-12 02:54 AM

Jeans too skinny & Jeans too loose both look equally stupid.

I cycle in black shorts (knee length) and a skins top + hoody and a massive bag so certainly not hip, but to be honest Im too busy minding cars, busses and all the hazards to be looking at what ppl are wearing. Btw London, England 4am start 4pm finish I see every kind of commuter.

xenologer 06-06-12 04:13 AM

my issue with 'hipsters' isnt the style of dress;
its the fact that the sense of fashion and 'hip' also leads them to ride without brakes and to thus blow through stop signs.

Which makes cyclists in general look bad, and creates dangerous situations when I meet them at intersections. The large number of 'custom' fixie advertisements these days does worry me a little...
to be fair, I also have similar issue with automobiles who prioritize fashion over practical function and safety (see SUVs)

kookaburra1701 06-06-12 04:56 AM

Does anyone remember when JNCO's were popular? In middle school I dreamed of having back pockets on my jeans big enough to fit cereal boxes like all the cool kids.

Seriously, the level of elitism in this entire forum is starting to really grate on me...

While I agree, a quick trip over to the SS/FG or Roadie sub-forums is all I need to come running back to the commuting section. It's intolerable over there.

Pause the Video at 1:15, The guy is riding a SRAM S80 wheel on a bike with bullhorns.......really? I am all for using good equipment and I have even ridden my cosmic Carbones once or twice for a commute when I needed to jump on my road-bike, but DAMN that is some nice wheelage for commuting.....

Yes, it does. I don't want to look at some guys's skinny buttcrack.

The disregard for the laws is part of the hipster culture, at least that how it seems to be in NYC. It must be the "stick it to the man" thing or something, except they cause damage to cycling in general, but they don't care.

Also, what pisses me off is when I coast down the bridge I have to watch out for wobbling fixters trying to keep their bike under control. I had few close ones with those characters.

Laf...This thread amuses me. :) I tried so-called "skinny jeans" once. Couldn't get them over my thighs. People with actual leg muscles can't wear them.
:innocent:

I don't care if commuting is hip. The more people riding, the better. If they look silly (subjective), it doesn't affect me, so who cares? Smile and wave.

Igo 06-06-12 06:36 AM

Unless another cyclist is coming straight at me in my bike lane or parks his bike in front of the restaurant door, I could care less what another cyclist does.

+1

Fewer cars and more bikes makes my commute easier and safer.

Now, if there were more healthy, young female commuters, that would be even better.

I use my Ksyrium SL wheels for commuting. They're the only ones I have, as they're on the only bike I have (my road bike).

In the one photo, the woman cyclist looks like she could crush whole cars between those cheeks.

mechanicalron 06-06-12 08:24 AM

We need hipster photos! I want to see what makes everyone so angry and I feel so out of the times on this so lash out :)

Oh, I just noticed there was a bike in that photo :D

AdamDZ 06-06-12 08:32 AM

Too bad this image doesn't cover all the ridiculous modifications to otherwise nice bike and the refusal of mainstream except for Apple products. Other than that it's pretty much on the spot.

Commodus 06-06-12 08:55 AM

It's a good thing and I don't care what they ride or how. I'd rather dodge a thousand rookies riding for a different reason than me, than one raging cager.

chipcom 06-06-12 08:57 AM

When commuting by bike becomes hip nationwide, we will know that we have entered the end times.

Scheherezade 06-06-12 09:06 AM

Skinny jeans and flannel look ridiculous, yet a full kit is perfectly acceptable. Just ride and don't worry about what everyone else is wearing.

alan s 06-06-12 09:08 AM

Memo to hipsters: no one outside your small group of friends actually cares what you wear while riding a bike.

I'm not sure how this turned into an "anti hipster" thread http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=254545

but...

Personally *I* don't think the video in the OP does much to promote long term commuting. It seems more of a promo for bike to work day.

tar wheels 06-06-12 09:26 AM

All this poser talk is silly...more people riding bikes is a good thing. Who cares what they look like?

I went to art school just as the hipster thing was taking hold. The things I have seen cannot be unseen.

(Also, as much fun as I make of hipsters, I make more fun of myself, and acknowledge how ridiculous my sausage-esque physique looks when I squeeze it into spandex.)

ETA: Is anyone else having trouble posting YouTube vids?

People, in general, dislike what they don't understand.

HardyWeinberg 06-06-12 09:32 AM

Heck if you're riding a bike to work you're commuting, you're not posing. Lots of people off bikes dress differently from me I'm not surprised to see people on bikes not wearing the same outfit as me either.

Also, the more people biking, the closer we get to that mythical 'critical mass' where drivers actually recognize us as fellow street users not as obstacles.

tsmvengy 06-06-12 09:58 AM

Look, we may have our differences but I think we can all agree that those people who dress up in seersucker/tweed and tool around on social rides are the worst. ;)
