Alright guys, I just started commuting a few weeks ago and this will will be my first full week of it. I have essentially 2 jersey's and 2 bibs I wear for cycling which includes commuting. I like them because 1) my ass is padded a little, and 2) the pockets in the jersey's hold my music player. My normal routine has me coming home and jumping in the shower so I don't stink the rest of the night. I also give my jersey/bib/socks a good rinse so they dont stink. Its a habit of mine that I picked up in college, I have no idea why I still do it now. So down to the point (yes, this actually has a point), I've started to think adding a 3rd set of jersey/bib's is probably a wise idea just in case the other 2 are not dry, or actually in the washer, etc.


So How many sets of commuting clothing do you all have?

I've got three pairs of shorts. I also have 4 jerseys but only 2 that I wear very much and one of them not at all. Usually I skip the jersey for commuting unless I'm going on a group ride after work. I'll wear a wicking t-shirt instead.

I wear a backpack for commuting so jersey pockets aren't that useful.

Commuting = 3 pair of tights, 3 pair of shorts, 4 LS jerseys, 2 SS jerseys, 1 jacket, 3 pair of gloves and 2 pair of shoes. 2 of the LS jerseys are cycling specific as are the gloves, jacket and shoes. The rest are regular athletic wear. Just don't ask me to list my MTB and road gear, that would be a much longer list.

Now, I don't suggest you run out and buy all this stuff. I accumulated it over many years of riding, and as I race and each year I get at least 2 jerseys and 2 bibs, they tend to pile up. I save my current year kit for races and the big local group rides, but use the older stuff for commuting and solo training. 3 sets is plenty for commuting.

None. The only time I'll change to cycling specific clothes is when I know the ride will take over an hour.

And even then... When public transport went on strike I have been known to do 65 kilometer round trips to appointments in ordinary clothes -- counting on the magic capacities of good wool clothing to neutralize any odours.

I don't have any cycling specific clothes (except gloves and a helmet, if you want to count those). I wear regular shorts and a t-shirt most days.

Same here. I do have an Adidas Quick Dry shirt but I wear that for working out at home mostly. I have only worn it once on my bike.

I rarely wear bike clothes for my current 5 mile commute but back in the 15-10 mile commuting days I liked to have a minimum of 2 pr shorts. I also liked to rinse them well immediately after the return trip, hang to dry, grab the other pair the next morning.

Machine wash/hang dry maybe once a month.

Currently have 4 shorts and 3 jerseys. Getting by just fine.

Because I live in South Florida and the temps don't get real cold, I have 5 jereseys (2 long sleeved) and 5 pairs of shorts. ONe pair of tights, a couple long sleeved tee shirts that I use for insulation, and a wind-proofed jacket I wear when it's cooler. I usually wear 3 jeresys in 5 days of commuting, and 3 different shorts, so I have stuff to wear on the weekend.

Six bibs that I change like underwear. Wear my work clothes over them, have one for my long weekend ride, wash everything once a week. 3 or 4 jerseys. I wear a work shirt (golf tee, and aloha print friday's) during commute, keep a pair of jeans at work to throw over the bibs-one pair a week. Jerseys, currently collecting from charity rides, for weekend 30-50 mile rides.

Get some wool performance tshirts and socks. You don't have to wash them as often. Works great as a base layer or shirt.
When you get to work you can drape it over your chair or hang it. It will be dry and funk free when you are ready to go home.

Maybe look at the discount bins for winter clothing..shell, thrift store wool sweater, I'm thinking San Diego rarely gets lower than the 50s?

Same here except I do have a J&G rain jacket which has become my regular jacket. I only wear Carhartt work pants/shorts because of the pockets on them.
My clothings' job is to provide weather protection, and to provide the pockets necessary for my gear, that I feel a compelling need to carry.

2 pair of mountain bike shorts I wear over my "real" cycling shorts. One pair is FOX and the other is Pearl Izume (like the FOX better). As for "real" cycling shorts, 3 pr. of Giordana, 1 Pearl Izume, 3 Voler.

I change clothes when I get to work, so never have to wear cycling shorts at work. Now for non-commuting sport cycling I have 6 pr. of bibs and 47 jerseys, none of which I use for commuting.

Shirt wise, I commute in T-Shirts (cotton) during the hot months and either long-sleeve base layers (I have Craft, Voler and Joneswear) or polo/golf shirts (also cotton). On cold days I can (and do) add arm warmers (I have 4 pr. but only use 1 pr. for commuting), leg warmers and knee warmers.

I did use bibs to commute once, but have never used a jersey to commute (though I wear them all the time for sport, recreational, mountain bike and ultra marathon riding).

I also add a balaclava commuting on cold days, use a lycra skull cap (Headsweats Brand) on warm days.

I haven't collected much on the line of cycling clothes yet, so on warm to hot days like we are having right now, I ride in cheap Champion running shorts and a wicking shirt. My shortest commuting route is 27 miles round trip, and never find myself wishing for padded shorts during my commute. I do have two pairs of cycling shorts that I save for longer weekend rides.

How long are you willing to wear a single pair of bibs/jersey? I have three pairs of shorts and two base layers for my 32 mile RT daily commute, and going 2-3 days (4-6 rides) on a single base-layer-type item of clothing without washing is pushing it in my book (jackets, jerseys worn outside base layers, etc don't count).
