Home made trunk
 

I am interested in making my own trunk for my rack. Waterproof is a concern but trash bags can solve that. ease of construction would be a help. Any ideas, plans, and moron just buy one comments accepted.

I personaly screwed a rubbermaid container on my rear rack with a strap to hold the cover tight. It's water proof, quick to make and really cheap. The main down side : UGLY. Another good thing is that it gives you a big surface to put reflective tape, which I did.I'll post some pics later tonight when I'm back home.

Can you sew? If so (nice pun, eh?) are you interested in panniers?

Unfortunately, even purchasing material and sewing can be more expensive than buying (durn that cheap child labor in Asia). Closeouts are probably your best bet there. Check out Sierra Trading, Nashbar sales (and keep and eye out for coupon codes). I have an old Cannondale pack I bought in the early 90's. I'm STILL using it.

A small duffel bag or backpack strapped down with a couple of bungee cords is like a trunk. Or, since it's election time, go snag a few of those annoying signs that are always illegally placed along the right of way.

A couple of other ideas just popped into my head:

-Take a basic toolbox or tacklebox and secure it to the rack in some manner.
-Use a soft sided cooler/lunch bag. Apply heavy duty Velcro to the base of the bag and the top of the rack (best if doing this with a "fender top" or solid platform)- instant quick release system.

One time I made one out of a 1 gal gas can. Red plastic with a yellow spout looking like a tail.

I got 83.5% on the 'rate my bike fredliness' thread a few weeks ago, I was very disapointed, was aiming for the stars!!! They said I needed a bigger container and more upward tilt to the handle bar!. They didn't take the home made rear fender made out of a crazy carpet and duct tape and the front fender made out of roofing metal sheet into account!!! And what about the old shifters(the brifters are broken and I didn't want to invest money)!!! Clearly the jury has been bribed! I love my fred bike :love:

That's because duct tape is so cliche. If you had used yarn woven from your dog's spring fur shed to tie it on, you would have pushed into the low or mid 90's. Add a bar basket made out of a dead hobo's skull and you'd have gotten into the high 90's, possibly even the stars you had hoped for.

Dramiscam, I must have mised your post to the thread. I would have given you a high 90's for sure. Aside from Xtrajack's ride, that is quite possibly the most fredly ride I have ever seen. Congrats on your resourcefulness!

There is a certain type of cat litter that comes in a FANTASTIC container.
It even has a channel molded in to it that holds the bungee cord in place.
I looked for the pic I had of it strapped to my folder, but just can't find it.
But, just g to the pet section of you store and Im sure you'll find it.
Plastic, a little door, good stuff :thumb:
