Disc-friendly fenders?
 

I'm looking for some disc-friendly fenders for my Salsa Vaya. I've tried SKS fenders, but the stays won't clear the front caliper, and they're too short to attach to the low-rider bosses.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Planet Bike Cascadia fenders include two "offset" spacers that you install on the caliper side to allow the stays to clear the calipers. Works great for my application. Here's a pic of the spacers and hardware that come with the fenders:

I've also used a thread union (from the hardware store) with a couple of washers and proper length SS bolts on SKS fenders with similar success. If you've already trimmed the ends of the stays, you'll very likely come up short, though.

Good info, thanks. Removing the secu-clips and installing spacers will probably work. I'd really like to give the Gilles Berthoud fenders a try, but I'm not sure if they'd offer better clearance (at the caliper).

I kept the clips on and made some small bends where the stays exit the clips (to maintain alignment of the mounting surfaces).

mechanics of creative fabrication may not be your strong suit..
so then people hire out the installation, to the shop that sells the parts.

I just bent the stays on my SKS (and later Planet Bike) fenders around the caliper. Took a couple of minutes, looks OK. The stays are barely long enough to make it after the bend, but they do make it.

i've got the same on my foul weather beast that has disc brakes. the included spacer and longer bolt do the trick.

overall the PB cascadia fender is great.

Planet Bike Speedez ATB fenders use strap-on mounting hardware that attach above the lower part of the fork and seat-stays. They install and can be removed quickly. They are a little more prone to misalignment than other Planet bike models, but work well.

I was able to fit a 700x38 Schwable Marathon Cross and the Speedez fenders on my Soma Double Cross with enough room for snow accumulation.

Do all three versions of the Cascadia (26, 29, hybrid) include the spacers, etc? I think the hybrid version would be the best fit for my 700x36 tires.

The 45mm wide Hybrid/touring will fit a 700x35 Schwalbe tire (on a 24mm wide rim) perfectly. A 700x36 will fit. A 700x38 was difficult to fit on the 45mm wide Hybrid/touring, but it can be done. Anything larger needs a Cascadia 29er, it will fit a 29er tire up to 29x2.3.

LBS that sells and installs them will have some extras in a bin, collected.

I played around with some SKS P45s last night, and I think I found a decent solution. If I mount the front fender with the bracket/tab in front of the fork (crown), that will enable attachment of the stays to the mid-fork braze-ons. And if I use an SKS Longboard fender, coverage should be more than adequate.

Almost any fenders will work. Just bend the struts.

I too have a vaya with racks and large sks fenders for 700/40 tires and had no problem mounting all of it. My brakes are avid elixir 3 and the stays go right over top of them without making contact. If the brakes were thicker I suppose I might have had to bend the stays a bit as others have mentioned. My only alteration has been to hack an inch or so off the stays so the fenders weren't too far from the tires.

Tried SKS Longboard, Planet Bike Speedez, and PB Cascadia fenders. All three worked fine for the rear wheel, but the Cascadia required the least amount of modification to accommodate the front wheel's disc caliper. The quick-release Speedez would have been ideal, but the Vaya's fork (offset at crown rather, than raked at dropouts) wasn't compatible.

BTW, the Planet Bike fenders install quite easily. They come with the stays pre-installed, and require very little in the way of adjustment.

While we are on the subject of Disk Friendly Fenders...anyone got a suggestion for said fenders with a suspension front end and a Topeak Explorer Rear Rack?
