Santa Ana River Trail Conditions

Any other commuters use the SA river trail? Maybe together we can keep eachother posted on the conditions.

I rode north from PCH this morning and had to detour east at Gisler then north on Harbor back to the trail to complete my commute to 17th. I'll note the closure dates next time I'm out . . . . and see if there's a better way to complete the detour . . . . riding on Harbor isn't very fun.

There's a construction closure just south of Memory Lane. I haven't been on the trail between 17th and Memory Lane for a few weeks.

There are a couple underpass closures north of Memory Lane that I encountered yesterday. I don't remember the streets. But, they should reopen when the river subsides. There was only one that I couldn't ride through on my cross bike. I only rode up to Tustin yesterday.

Good on ya Orange County Commuters!

I'll give a report tomorrow about the trail, from MacArthur to Kraemer. :)

Great! There are two of us! I'm heading to Mammoth tomorrow to put in some telemark practice for a few days. I'll be sure to check this thread before I ride to work on Tuesday morning!!

Thanks!

1/14/05 News report from Corona:

A leak has been discovered in the Prado Dam. Some of the homes downstream are being evacuated this morning. This could put a hurt on the bike lane if it gets much worse, or (heaven forbid) breaks.

I usually start my SART rides in Corona at Green River.

My usual commute route, The San Gabriel River Trail, is under water in a couple of spots.

Didn't make it out today - overslept. Luckily, I have the excuse of the damn making taking the trail sketchy today. Yeah, that's it.

I wouldn't risk it while this situation persists - I'll be sticking to surface streets for the time being.

They are letting water out of Prado Dam at the highest volume possible (10,000 csf+) to empty the reservoir and attempt repairs. It should take several days to empty. If the bike trail wasn't under water earlier, it is now! :(

Update January 20: Construction closure still in effect just south of Memory Lane. The trail was clear from Memory Lane to Imperial. Hopefully I'll have the report from the beach to Santa Ana soon!

I almost killed a squirrel today. It ran right out into my front wheel from the left . . . . bounced off . . . . tumbled under my bottom bracket and hit my right foot . . . and ran off. I was going about 20 at the time. I wish pedestrians would be more careful crossing the trail!!

The ride home tonight was great! I felt like I'd moved to the country . . . . beautiful sky, the sweet fragrance of trees on the breeze, the sound of birds and frogs as the light dwindled into darkness . . . . . . oops this is supposed to be a trail condition report!

Sorry . . . the trail was clear from 17th all the way to the beach. There's some construction just north of the 4 mile mark. But, it's just some barracades that you can ride around.

It was still a great commute!!

There is a part of bike path in San Juan Capistrano along the river toward Dana Point harbor, asphalt fell into the river by 50 yard in length. I was there a couple of days after the last rain storm, the repair work was taking place. I don't know how much of repair work has been done, I haven't been there since.

This construction (and detour through the neighborhood to the west of the river) should be going on until March - it started in October. The detour isn't too bad, except for the entry-way from Garden Grove Blvd. Usually some nasty debris, and a little bit of mud under the road. The chain-link tunnel north of this is quite nice, actually - I think it does something to the wind to make it just a wee bit smoother travel.
